Well inevitably, I kept upgrading my secondary VR rig and it just keeps getting out of control lol. Even though my EVGA RTX 3070 XC3 was more than enough for any VR games, I went and got a Sapphire Radeon RX 6900XT Nitro+ to toss in there for really no other reason than to just have an all AMD rig I could play around on

The Sapphire RX 6900XT just came in today and I popped it in and ran a few benchmarks to get a baseline at stock speeds.

Card seems to boost to about 2300Mhz at stock out of the box settings.

Just added a Cooler Master ML 120L V2 to the build......that comically isn't any better than a Cooler Master Hyper 212 that was originally on here....but hey...at least it has those RGBzzzzzzzz

Re: I don't know why I do this.....LOL 2021/01/21 20:31:25 (permalink)
Did a little overclocking and not like Nvidia where you just set an offset and go. You have to set a range of clocks for the GPU as a min and max and seems the closest window you can set is a 100Mhz gap between min/max. So the card was boosting to 2300Mhz stock so I set a 2350-2450Mhz core clock with 1050mv and ran it and it responded pretty well as the scores jumped up from stock by a decent margin. Memory only lets you set it to 2150Mhz which is 17.2Ghz (up from stock 16Ghz) for a paltry increase in memory bandwidth to 550GB/s (up from 512GB/s)

I can't help but think had AMD really gone for it and granted these cards a wider than 256bit bus, these would be much better off. I'd be willing to bet if they went with a 12GB frame buffer and increased the bus width to 384bit these would be around 10-15% faster than they are now. I know the "Infinity Cache" is supposed to make up for some of it but there is only so much help tricks like that can do. These cards are at such a bandwidth disadvantage to even the RTX 3080 (760GB/s) that it's no wonder they start to fall apart at 4K. Having the 16GB VRAM then funneling it through a straw's width 256bit bus was a mistake. They really needed to go with G6X if they wanted to stick with 256bit bus width.

Anyway enough ranting, here's the updated results

That's a nice secondary rig, Mr. Craptacular. Do you think that the PCIe 4.0 helps anything with the limited bus? Your explanation makes a lot of sense.

Nope, the PCI-e bus only helps with the card communicating with the CPU (which honestly even 3.0 was/is more than enough for this) what we have here is a case of a GPU not getting fast enough access to it's onboard VRAM to really take advantage of it.

PCI-e 3.0 - 4.0 is really insignificant performance bump, like less than 1% performance we're talking here. We just aren't at the point where current gen cards are saturating the bandwidth offered on PCI-e 3.0 so as it stands right now 4.0 is really only helpful for fast NVMe drives.

The card does respond very well to clock speed increases on the core. Just testing with Port Royal and setting a range of 2400-2500 GPU clock netted an increase of over 200 points for what was really only about a 50Mhz bump in average frequency.

lol yeah, it's hopeless. I need help

As for pushing it, I dunno how much more it's got in Port Royal. It is rather telling that this card running at 2450Mhz core still looses to my previous RTX 3080 running at 1800Mhz core by about 1000 points. AMD has a lot of work to do in the DXR department. 80 RT cores vs 68 RT cores should be no contest.....

Nice! Your Intel set-up could push it harder. I think your PSU might be holding you back. From everything I've seen on those, a lot of people are getting the GPU to max which is like 2700Mhz if I remember right.

2700Mhz on the stock air cooler isn't going to happen regardless of power supply, you need water cooling for that. These cards are similar in that they disregard your set speeds and clock up or down based on temperatures. If I could lower it to like 40C edge and 50C junction it would clock much better. But yeah, the PSU is probably going to be the next nonsensical upgrade I do to this thing lol.

Regardless though, I'm OK with it running 2400Mhz for my VR games on this rig. That's what I'm testing now and seeing if this card is gonna be around for the long haul or just a weekend toy lol. AMD drivers do seem to play a little better with VR titles than they did last year when I was messing around with a 5700XT. It could be that this card just brute forces VR better than the 5700XT did and that's why I'm gonna do some VR tests tonight. I'm going to put the RTX 3070 back in and get a baseline and then see what the difference is with this 6900XT.

Well, you gotta buy the water pump first to get the second loop, then you will "need" that PSU upgrade. Your scores look awesome all around, pretty much passes up my RTX 2080Ti even when I'm all pushed to the max on overclocks.

Oh, it's clearly better than my old RTX 2080 Ti. The raster performance is probably even faster than my RTX 3090 when under 4K resolution. The weakness is the DXR performance is only marginally better than a 2080 Ti. Of course you don't have access to things like DLSS or the fantastic NVenc, but as a gaming card it is faster overall than a 2080 Ti and by a good margin.

Nice! I didn't have a good experience with the RX 5700XT so I was kind of drawn away from really purchasing a 6000 series card. It sounds like a lot of people are pretty happy with the new RX 6000 series but a lot more people are using AMD. Those that use the Ryzen platform are the ones that are happy with it from what I have noticed. I wonder if running Intel is possibly why I had so many driver failures... I would guess they probably focus most driver refinement towards the Ryzen platform.

Well the drivers sucked for me too with my 5700XT and I was using a Ryzen 5 2600 and a B450i at the time. So it definitely wasn't just an Intel thing. The drivers were genuinely terrible for a while and the VR support was awful.

Good to know, I've been curious about that for a while. It's been too long since I have switched platforms, playing around with parting out my 2nd rig to build out an all AMD set-up kinda like yours, probably a 6800XT and 5600XT though. I do see where the 5900X is getting in the top scores on 3DMark now, when I thought it was only Intel primarily.

AMD has been making strides in game performance with the 5000 series CPUs. Their achillies heel however is they don't all core overclock very well at all compared to Intel. Intel is still faster for benchmarks because they easily go beyond 5Ghz on even modest AIO coolers, where as with AMD you will often need sub ambient cooling (water chiller at the bare minimum) to even get close to a all core 5Ghz clock. You are often better off just using PBO on a standard air or even water cooled AMD rig for gaming since when you set a manual all core overclock on AMD you lose it's boost frequency turbo and single cores can hit 4.9+ Ghz on AMD 5000 series CPUs. There is only one board currently for AMD that lets you tune the core clocks and keep the boost bins but it's virtually unobtainable, the ASUS Crosshair X570 Dark Hero.

I wouldn't say I switched platforms here, as I still primarily game on my Intel/Nvidia system. I just like to see what's available on both sides of the table. That's not to say I "wouldn't" however. If one system were to up and die and I was forced to just use one or he other it wouldn't bother me. They are both total overkill for gaming and both would be able to do really anything I asked of them as all I do is light video editing and mainly gaming.

Yeah, it doesn't help AMD that the majority of AIO's out there are not really designed for them, they just made a bracket to fit but nothing to address the difference in chiplet layout. Having a backup definitely prevents compulsive purchases. I'm getting to the point that my main rig is never down though, so i'm trying to figure out ways to use my 2nd PC. It's not AS good as my main and I pretty much never use it... so i'm thinking about parting it out to get some money to play around with some new hardware or maybe something else that will get me out of the dang house, i'm like a hermit now.

I would say go ride your bike but not sure how cold it is where you live. Down here in south FL we have the luxury of riding year round.

I remember you being curious about VR, and your secondary rig is a fine candidate to play anything in VR........

That's a pretty good AMD card. I would imagine you'll have no problems with gaming at max settings.

Yeah, it's a bit chilly but I added handlebar covers to stop the wind from hitting my hands while riding, I really don't have a good excuse. I probably will see if I can get a nice ride in tomorrow.

I got really bad motion sickness last time I put on a VR game on the PS4, my buddy had the HTC Vive but I never got to try it... I watched him play Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality, was kind of cool. Right now if I buy anything like that it's going to have to be at the cost of selling something else. I have some big house repairs that is eating up any and all fun money right now, one of my bathroom showers have been down because it was leaking into the garage, so we quit using it for a LONG time... The wife is ready for me to get my own shower back.

Seems there is a power play table mod available for these cards similar to the 5700 series.......Maybe ordering watercooling gear is going to be in order soon. I don't wanna do the MPT mod on the stock cooler, because last time I did something similar with my RX5700 I killed it and I'm in no hurry to murder a $1200 video card right now

OH I went down the car modding slippery slope a while ago and yeah it's a money pit lol. I had a '97 Mustang GT that I did a bunch of mods/upgrades to. Did all kinds of stuff like under drive pulley kit, K&N cold air intake, Dynomax performance headers and exhaust, ECU upgrade, fuel pump....etc. It was fun, but also a nightmare :P
