A Guitar Designed for the Father of Heavy

Tony Iommi has once again teamed up with Epiphone, and unleashed the Limited Edition Tony Iommi SG Custom solidbody electric guitar. A limited edition version of his iconic SG, Tony's instructions to Epiphone were to make his SG Custom something he would play on stage. To that end, your amp will be punished by a set of his Gibson Iommi signature pickups. And you fingers will wrap around a 24-fret bound ebony fretboard, with his defining cross inlays. Epiphone built this LTD Iommi SG Custom to crank out some of the heaviest riffs of all time.

Epiphone LTD Tony Iommi SG Custom Solidbody Electric Guitar at a Glance:
    • Built for Tony Iommi to use onstage with the mighty Black Sabbath
    • Equipped with Gibson Iommi humbuckers
    • Production quantities limited to 2,000 guitars worldwide

Bill 1024 - very nice looking instrument - not sure if we discussed my 2 basses. Anyway I have a Yamaha and a Music man both 4 string active and a fender 100 watt combo. I used to play in the 90's at bars in NW Florida but now I jam with friends. My wife let me play at the house but not in the last three years - at least not full tilt through the amp.
I am sure you are going to get hours of fun out of your new axe. Looks really nice.

Edit - love this part - "To that end, your amp will be punished by a set of his Gibson Iommi signature pickups"

Nice Robby, I let it rip when the wife is not home, makes us both happy that way.
I have an Ibanez R200 (I think that is the model) 4string bass, like to play once in a while..
Also have an Ibanez Art100 six string that I installed a Bigsby on, sweet sounding axe for the price.
I play through a VOX30 amp, plenty loud for the house.
    Wish I still had my 60s Fender Showman  I had when I was a teenager. 100w 2 x12 speakers
Mom always yelling, "Turn that thing down" lol
Thing would be worth a small fortune today.

I bet and that amp you have could probably wake my neighborhood. I have all wood floors so it would be very live in my house.
I have a wireless pack I put on to keep from fumbling around cables and sometimes I will walk outside with the door shut just to see how bad the volume is, but being a bass not so bad. Inside the house I have had to put pictures and other items back as they have vibrated off the counter, end tables and other places.
And that is just running my Fender 100 watt pretty hard.

so yeah my wife would not be around for those sessions and let it rip I did!

Color me jealous. I've always wanted to learn to play. I started to learn but just didn't have the time and let it go. I did play saxophone in school so I do have a musical back round from times past lol.

It is a lot of fun - even if you just play along with an album. A good gauge of how happy I am is how much I am playing.
Good to see you on the forums zophar.

I love playing bass too. What I started with as a teenager.
My son-in-law is building me a custom home made Telecaster , it is almost done.
He even painted it the teal color of my 93 Mustang cobra, very cool.
It is almost done, but for some issue with the electronics.

Think down the road, would love to get a lap-steel or peddle steel.
Was thinking of buying a cheap Strat knockoff from a pawn shop and modding it into a lap-steel.

That's one thing I envy about all the guitar players - if your band needs a bass player then a guitarist can play the bass - same thing less 2 strings E A D G
I like it because its rhythm and there are 4 telephone cables that my fat fingers can move around and press the pads as opposed to pressing the tips with a guitar.lol

Downside - bass equipment is way heavier -  the bass is heavier.

No - I was thinking about a 5 string with the low B but it may end up a good thumb rest. But it will definitely allow me to play some songs that go below E. I have seen some guys that can go to town on a 6 string - not sure what Les Claypool plays but has a ton of effects.
8 string no way - just not that good at it to pay for an 8 or more - there are some cool videos with basses that have more than 8 strings and they play more melody than rhythm.

Nope!! Never tried a 8 string Bass, but imo I don't really see the point of it unless your a Jaco type player. I actually always wanted to try and buy a decent upright Bass, which I got turned on to cause my wifes cousin has one. Hes a jazz/rock/metal/punk weird kind of player, but a really great player and person. Then again, all us Bass players are as cool as it gets!  :P

I never even knew there was such a thing as an eight string bass until I was watching Cheap trick on TV.
I got a good look of the headstock and thought I was seeing double looking at all the tuners.
Then I looked it up and sure enough eight strings..

UPS just came and dropped off my SG.
That picture in the first post does not do it justice.
What a great looking guitar. Action was set up fairly well.
No string buzz what so ever.
Not played through the amp yet, wife goes to work at 8:30 in the morning...
I don't get up until 10 anyway. Cup of coffee then.................
Play it as is for a while the think I'll drop tune it to D or C# and see how she sounds.

Watch this guy play his 17 string bass. Again 6 and higher start playing melodies. This guy in the video is tapping most of the notes and it sounds good. There is a 24 string bass but the stings are in sets of 3 analogous to a 12 string guitar where you have to pick it.
I prefer a good old 4 string - pluck, pick, tap and slap techniques

Glad you got your new axe. The reviews say it looks way better than the pictures, just as you said.

Very nice. I think Gretsch makes some beautiful looking and sounding guitars.
I would love a hollow body Gretsch. Going to be a while though.
If one pop up cheap on craigslist would be about the only way for a long while.

I'll get picks of my other guitars posted soon.

I have a 5-string I never use. 99% of what I want to play can be done on a 4-string. Heck, I could probably play most anything I'd want to on a 3-string. I really don't like a wide or thick neck bass. All those extra strings just get in the way.

Brad - You are making my Thursday! I too could probably play everything I have ever played on 3 strings - would need to leave some small parts out that I play close to the pickup on the G, but that's like two songs out of a million.lol
You could probably make that case for the piano who needs all 88 keys?

Heck if I could afford an 8 string bass - I would not be at work now.

ps - the Gretsch looks awesome!

So this is my first bass I bought when I moved to Jacksonville 2002- sold all my music stuff prior to moving. Active -not a $1000 bass but stays in tune and carried me until I got my Music man. If i had and criticism it would be neck dive - the neck will tilt toward the ground if you are not paying attention.

Neck dive? I have a Dean double neck 6/12 that brings new meaning to the phrase "Crash dive". But then that gives me more reason to hold her tight.

I have never held a double neck guitar but that is a lot of weight.

Guess you guys do not play an eight string bass then!

I've always been less of a technical player and more of a high energy player. I love to jam with others. For that 3 strings are more than enough.

Very nice! Here is my latest...

It's a 7 string I made a few weeks ago and then stained. Could use better pickups but it plays pretty well.

My next newest is that black Ibanez acoustic bass. Behind that is a Martin, a couple of Fender acoustics, Fender 12 string, a white Ovation, Jackson King V, some other Jackson and a 5 string Ibanez bass.

These are some unfinished projects. That cow looking ugly thing on the far left is my very first guitar. I've had it for over 25 years now.

and these are my "go to" axes at the moment. Ibanez 5 string, Fender Strat with Lace sensors, Jackson Pro King KVMG with EMGs and a Jackson Kelly. I also have a pretty nice Taylor but it stays in the case most of the time.
