From what I've read, it seems like Ryzen chips hit an overclock ceiling of about 4 Ghz. So how useful is water cooling really for Ryzen chips? I ask because I've been considering the water cooler and 1080ti bundles and I'm wondering just how useful water cooling would be for me and my R5 1600x.
Anyone have any experience with this?

I have 1700 @ 3,8 with watercooling. Had to test it, but stress test with CPU-Z goes up to 51c. Gaming temps, if i remember correctly, was 30-40c at PUBG. 1600x should be little less among the way. Also GPU at same loop and folded while stress tested cpu temps, so that affects too. Get Watercool if: - Have little bit money over you - Want silent build - Want to little bit customize your pc - Its still hobby If somebody asks, its pointless. "You can use pc aircooled too"

So it's not all that useful. Hopefully future generations of Ryzen chips allow for more overclocking potential. Perhaps Ryzen 2? I fear we'll have to wait for an entirely new architecture.

If your not into overclocking, i would just stick with air cooler or AIO hydro cooler for the CPU. Custom water cooling setups can get expensive.

This is exactly what I feared. I was thinking about getting into water cooling just for kicks, but it seems like that's all it would be good for at this point. AMD has to figure out how to open their hardware up a bit more. Intel seems to have them really whipped in that department. It seems like people are able to overclock quite a bit. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with my decision to go AMD, but it would be nice to have that little extra something to play around with.

Right now, for me, the best argument for WC'ing would be to prevent CPU's and GPU's from hitting throttling limits. In all honesty stock clocks on most of these components do way more than required for your average workload/gaming but they will throttle back once they hit those heat limits. IF WC'ing a systems can cut 10*C off the top end and prevent throttling then it allows the system to maintain it's maximum performance.

Yeah, but at what cost? Custom water system$ have got to be pricey and pretty risky. Also, how safe is having water swirling around inside your PC? How typical are water cooler leaks?

Why do you say "pretty risky", they are not that different than a AIO. They can leak as well. I all three types of cooling and both Ryzen and Intel CPU's on Custom Water Loops and Intel CPUs under AIO Cooler. I have had one Custom Loop leak and clean up all was fine, I had 2 AIO Coolers leak and replaced them with no issues or damage. What happens when your Car runs Dry on Coolant? Do you keep driving? Do you wait for the Engine to Quit Running? Do You Pull Over and Stop the Car? Not really that different with any device that uses water.

A custom W/C loop can be half way inexpensive(less then $300) and it's safe if done right. Leaks are all dependent on initial setup & how toughly a system is put together and tested. Ideally you would want to put as little hardware in your rig as possible when you first power on with water cooling. My last custom loop I did was about 10 years ago, and I was playing a game when my PC locked up with artifact on screen. Upon looking into my PC their was standing water on my top GPU. I powered the system off, dried off the card & everything went back to normal. Using distilled water in a loop is critical as it is non conductive, so even if a leak should happen, you will likely be okay if you catch it early & the leak isn't a total blow out. Like others have said too, most people do custom water cooling as hobby more than anything else. Is the cost worth it? no probably not for the average user. But making something unique and truly your own gives a nice sense of accomplishment For most though, the market is full of AIO Water cooling units which keep most users happy.

Only had one leak and it was due to a bad component(cracked reservoir) and it was caught before any damage was done in my rig. But this is why you leak test everything before letting it go. They can get expensive but for the most part it can be done at a reasonable cost. It is a top tier build option but it does have it benefits. It's just up to the user to determine if the benefits outweigh the cost. If I sunk that much money into a CPU I would seriously consider water cooling it regardless of over clocking just to ensure I kept it from hitting the throttling points under heavy work loads.

wait until amd releases the next gen procs. according to globalfoundries they will be capable of a 40% increase in clock speed. if true things will get very interesting!

I somehow missed the news on that one. That will be exciting to say the least! It's so nice to see AMD back in the competition these days. Gosh they were stagnant so long!

joeymir I've heard similar things, and it does make sense given Ryzens limited overclocking ability. Still though, it never hurts to keep things cooler, and also nothing beats the looks of a well done water cooling system
I'm in TX and I'm all for having the CPU and GPU cooler. Current Ryzen's don't really benefit from it, but I can run 4.25ghz at 40-50C instead of maxing the cpu temp and having it throttle, same with the GPU.

Like others have said, stick with a non-conductive coolant and you're fine. I've been water cooling for 6 years now(?) with both hard and soft tubing. I've had one leak and was from my kitten pulling on the soft tubing when I left the side of case open. Distilled water was EVERYWHERE! lol. I took out the gpu, the SSD, and the PSU-dried them all off, with a towel and hair dryer on low. I put it back together and all worked perfectly. All I lost was bout 2 hours of my time and my patience with the kitten. :)

You get into water cooling you will try to find better stuff...a better block, bigger rad, a better pump, bigger tubing/bigger fittings etc the cheap copper z97 block seems ok, hitting 70c at 4.8ghz not too bad. About just as good as the EK Block... Need to delid and relid sure about anything could put on is better than that toothpaste tim. but not really needed stay at 4.8ghz a lot daily runner 70c stuff is pretty cool actually. wish idle temps were better though idle stuff is kinda warm. I like it, it's nice and quiet. Airr is always louder and obnoxious.

No offense but till this day I haven't seen a perfectly silent water cooling. On air a computer is at least usually absolutely silent when on idle. A water pump can be heard anytime. Don't get me wrong, I would really like to replace my Dark Rock Pro 3 with a fancy blue water cooling, maybe I just missed the silent stuff yet. Last try I did was a Kraken X62 AIO. The pump was so noisy that I had to send it back. Maybe someone can enlighten me if there are totally silent pumps?

Not totally silent but custom loops and external pumps are usually really quiet, definitely all Quieter than the Noctua D14 with two or 3 faster fans on it, what I was using prior.
