Speedtest.net is, well, is, ummmm, I'll just raise the flag and call it a day.

Oops, I had to fix that link.

Got some stuff in a plastic box that's makes my screen turn on when I push the button on the front, cool.

I think it's aliens, but I'll have to confirm with voodoo do-er on that.

If I go to Speakeasy, my test seems more in line with what I actually get, and what my ISP states I should get.

I'm pretty sure speedtest.net doesn't give accurate results, they seems just a wee bit "bloated".

I tried a Speakeasy test and got nearly identical results to speedtest.net.  I didn't try DSL Reports though because the closest server (also San Fran area) was not responding.

It's really the only reason I'm going to college: awesome internets.

are you actually in classes or do you just take your laptop and a bunch of external hardrives and fill them up and come home with them?

I usually just use the Comcast speedtest server, I seem to get better results with it.

I wish i had something better out here -=( . I hate TWC so much. Such a bad company.

A mile away people who have Charter have 60 down 5 upload for like 20 bucks more in price as what i pay for internet and they have had it for like a year now. There is no competition there so charter was not tryn to keep customers.. Just trying to keep customers happy... TWC? they will only give Docsis 3.0 and wideband speeds to people who have Fios in the area to choose from!

I hatez TWC!

I don't like speedtest.net because it's really, really inaccurate for me.

It says I get 30mbit down 2mbit up, but that's double when I actually get.

It's because my ISP boosts my speed to around double for about 30 seconds when I start transferring a file.

After about 30 seconds it lowers down to the speed that I'm actually paying for and the speed that actually matters when I'm downloading something larger than about 3MB.

Re:How fast is your ISP? 2011/03/10 11:15:53 (permalink)
I was told a long time ago that if you want an accurate, "REAL WORLD" speed test, go to Micro$oft's website and dwnld a service pack. That way, you aren't testing your speed on a server dedicated to JUST speedtests.

For instance, dwnld SP3 for XP http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4 or better yet, any of the larger SP's for W7. Let it download then check out what the average speed was when it's done. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=c3202ce6-4056-4059-8a1b-3a9b77cdfdda

That's more of a REAL WORLD speed, go figure, when you're downloading a file from pretty much anywhere on the net, someone else is too.

Got some stuff in a plastic box that's makes my screen turn on when I push the button on the front, cool.

I think it's aliens, but I'll have to confirm with voodoo do-er on that.

Speedtest.net tells me 19.3 down, "real world" SP3 from Micro$haft gives me this:

Just a slight difference.

I have TimeWarnerCable Roadrunner Turbo and my D/L is usually 20-22Mbs but my U/L is only 0.75Mbs. Costs $45 a month since I dont get cable or phone service.

In terms of "Real World" speeds as you guys put it my download speeds average 2.0Mb/s sometimes higher on Steam and other sites with higher bandwidth.

Yeah, downloading a service pack from Microsoft is a very accurate test for me.  I get 1.80MB/s which is exactly my 15mbit (minus TCP overhead for parity) that I pay for.

if we are talking download speed I can max out at 2.5MB/s,

Microsofts Site, Downloading Games on Steams Servers, and Private Torrent sites are good places to test it.

I'm supposed to be on the 100Mb service but this is the fastest I get:

I thought Comcast only offered a 100/10 package. A 100/20 would be pretty nice! I still don't understand why cable co's are so fixated on highest download speeds but not upload... seeing things like a 60/5 or a 100/10 saddens me...
