Think I have messed up the liquid metal applying, likely to thin a layer. What idle temps should I be looking for on a 7920X? idles at around 31c while it clocks at 1.2 on desktop. Overclocked to 4.7 so far and realbench hits 105c, three cores go way higher than the rest. Cinebench R15 even hits 93c, do you think my assumptions are correct?

I don't know what the temp IDLE for 7920X but my is 8086k running IDLE at 25c and full load at 70ish 1.385v with Delid of course!!
Maybe it silly question to ask you...Did you use Thermal pasta on top the heatsink of CPU as well? that maybe cause too hot without thermal pasta? Or you put too much volt for CPU core?

Yeah, horrible load temps, yikes!..Idle temps should be at or near ambient.

Pump and fans running at 100 percent?..Did you apply the liquid metal (what kind?) to both the IHS and the cooler cold plate, and also on the inside of the IHS and on the CPU die, or did you go direct-die?..Too much Vcore like Coolmistry said?

The liquid metal application is very picky, you for sure have to get the right amount or it will make things worse not better, the temps your are seeing is pretty high for the 7920X cpu if its done correctly. What voltages are you running the cpu at ?  CPU input voltage? CPU core voltage?   As far as some cores going higher then others that is normal.

+1 Bob and Sparetimepc
I don't use left on Auto for CPU Core voltage it went too high voltage hit 1.475v I think (can't remember) running at 5.2 so try set to manual for core and Adaptive voltages!

Here is pictures i just took of my 10940X at 4.9GHz on all 14/28 cores running the kombustor cpu burner.    Idle temps and then also a picture while the burner still running after 15 minutes at 100% load on all cores.  This is with a cpu input voltage of 1.9V and a cpu core voltage of 1.3V    Also using the Optimus Intel Signature V2 water block.

Why isn't it throttling back ?

Why would it throttle, its not close to throttle temps yet. Those temps are all 28 cores at 4.9GHz 100% load for 15 minutes.  Those are not bad temps at all for that type of stress in a cpu burn in test.  My 7980XE is still running strong after 3 years of this kind of usage, i'm not afraid !!!!    You can't scare me mister.

Yea ok if you don't think that's hot .
Hottest my i9 9900ks gets is (which is a lot faster) ,which I can OC to 5.5 @ 1.435v and it hits 80 max but normally much below that ( 4.7 cache) .

+1 but the CPU will throttle back once it hits a thermal barrier

Thermal barrier should be below 100C ???
My point is , it's not throttling.
It should never get to those temps (105C)

If CPU Thermal Control is disabled in the BIOS (which it is not by default), then it will not throttle at PROCHOT (TjMax) temp but could continue until THERMTRIP temp is reached and shut down..Intel does not guarantee recovery from a THERMTRIP event.

Used thermal grizzly and a copper IHS from rockitcool. And I did not forget paste on top.
High 30's idle, looks like I'll have to do it again. Thanks for confirming it is fudged.

I use the Noctua paste and as I write this I'm running 2 web pages and SETI at HOME.
SETI using all cores on my cpu (i9 7900X) and my temps for the cpu is 79 C to 85 C (over clocked to 4.6 GHz.).
Ide it's between 35-40 C.
My cpu has not been de-lidded.
If I over clock the cpu to 4.7 GHz the temps sometimes reaches over 90 C (too much for me).
I use the largest EVGA AIO (before the 360) on the cpu .
I use the automatic over voltage on the cpu and it's 1.143 to 1.225 (using HWmonitor).
Pull it apart and take a look.

If your cooler is not tight enough you'll get excess heat .
If it's too tight , you risk damaging MOBO.
Last thing you want is bent pins on CPU socket .

If your cooler is not tight enough you'll get excess heat .
If it's too tight , you risk damaging MOBO.
Last thing you want is bent pins on CPU socket .

You won't get bent pins from tightening the CPU too much...they're supported by the plastic in the socket not the pins.  The ILM presses the CPU onto the pins down to the plastic so it rests on the plastic.  I mean I guess you could smash it with a hammer so it would go past the support but at that point... anyway this is really not something you have to worry about under normal circumstances.

You could break the CPU die when you are delidded but that's a separate problem.

No , you are wrong .
I have done this myself and I bent the pins.
Cost me over 700 for a new MOBO .

Even the best of engineers can't help if you put the cpu in wrong or drop it, etc.

It was put in right, just overtightened .
I had temp issues with an i9 9900k and thought it would be a good idea to overtighten the cooler thinking it wasn't tight enough and that's why it was getting hot (100C)
Bad idea and hello new MOBO.

My delidded 7920X @ 4.5GHZ / 1.15V temps w/ Liquid Metal:

Ouch, permatex squeezed over capacitors and one got ripped from taking off IHS. Now a dud, thanks everyone nevertheless, I may just pick up a cheap 9820X while prices are low and call it day.
