Yup.  The machine in the video(s) is a hand made CNC milling machine that I built with mostly hand tools (except a drill press & bandsaw) in my basement.

yah, lol. I designed the things and it looks like your getting them befor methats good though. I have pleanty of kinks to work out of my rig before i get everything mounted up properly. I need about 20 more lbs of copper machined before i will be finished

oh, btw. there is a spring (i will see if i can find the part number. it is a common one that comes with some of the stock coolers as well.) that will mount under the top to give a positive stop for tightening. you dont have to use a spring at all though if you are carefull not to over/under tighten. also if you use a spring, put a small plastic washer between it and the motherboard.

Yeah I know what you are talking about...I am going to see what is in the kit that came with the Danger Den blocks.  Part number would be nice.

yah, now that you mention it, i think it is the springs that come with the block that i used. I think you will need the little white washer that comes with the dd kit as well. the springs might not go all the way bottomed out. be carefull when cranking it down. a tip i use is mount it with modest pressure, then fire up the machine run some folding, or burn in, and do an eighth turn in cross pattern and watch the temps. you will see three or 4 degrees diferance depending on tightness on which corners. of course your tim and the flatness of the cpu come into play as well.

Yeah the koolance CPU blocks have a similar spring mechanism that would act the same way.

Ta-da.
btw, the screws came in lots of 10 from McMaster.  Did you get black ones or something?  That would prolly match better since the SR2 block has black screws.  I was hoping someone would have gotten chrome screws to match nozzles but not a single person opted for them.  *shrug*

They offered them in packs of 10?  I totally did not even see that.

And as for the block:

Re:Home made Danger Den MC-TDX replacement Copper top 2011/07/21 05:50:08 (permalink)
yea?  I ordered the exact screw that G put down on the plans...

OH CR@P... I got the 6-32 ones then?!  I forgot we changed it to M3?!  argh!

What was the screw part # from McMaster?  The original spec was 1.125" which I can go under being 25mm, or over being 30mm.  I like getting longer screws, and just grind off what gets in the way.

Here is what I found:

Standard Thread—Black
M3—Pitch: 0.5 mm
30 100 91290A130 $8.76

Type 316 Stainless Steel—DIN
912-A4
M3—Pitch: 0.5 mm
30 25 92290A126 $9.69

btw, I counterbored the heads for the .140 6-32 head.  The measured depths of each counterbored are around .150 (about a hundredth of an inch here & there)

The M3 screw head is 3mm (0.1181")
That means the screws will be sunk down 0.04" below the surface.

I got the stainless steel ones that were talked about before the change.  I think though that the black will look better as you said with the overall theme as I am going with black matte finish compression fittings, although I am going to see what it looks like with some of the Koolance fittings.
They are now ordered and shipped.  Should have them by Friday.

Very nice block Nate. Clean, elegant and slick looking I have a question, do you think it would make a difference on temps if the outside surface of the block is lapped to 2,000 or 5,000 grit?

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

I don't think it will matter in the least.  It would look SEXY AS HELL to have a mirror finish on all that copper though.
