One of my good buddies as work is looking to build a closed cabinet for his living room to contain all of his gaming consoles.
xbox 360, xbox one x, ps4, gamecube, etc. He will have mabey 3 shelves and 6 various consoles.
He is trying to add fans to the enclosure to keep things from overheating, because it will have on or running electronics in it while it is closed.
He also asked if it would be possible to add some sort of temperature controller where it will only spin the fans up when needed or when the temperature in the cabinet gets high.

There will be no pc in or around the cabinet to be able to control fans with a program, so it would have to be it's own powered, and self controlled setup.
If it was just fans, that would be no problem. Just slap a usb powered fan controller on it and add some fans. But he would prefer it be self regulating, opposed to manually controlled with a knob.
Anyone have any suggestion on how to accomplish this? Im kinda at a loss at the moment.

    use a HVAC thermostat

It would work for your cabinet the same as it works for your home - mount it near the top where the heat will be

I would probably wire it to a relay - thermostat controls relay - relay takes the load - do not forget a fuse for safety

Shelves should allow air movement throughout the cabinet

It would be advisable to use an air filter on the intake side

you could also use something like this [link=https://www.amazon.com/Woocon-Compatible-Activated-Devices-Multi-function]https://www.amazon.com/Wo...Devices-Multi-function[/link] use a external 12v power supply and some case fans, maybe some 200mm sized ones for low noise. it can be used with schedules, alexa, google home etc... you can even get larger multi outlet ones from trendnet that can control the console power also.

Hrmmm....  will have to do a little research on how to wire up the thermostat/relay. How do you propose that will layout. Would i be powering the thermostat and the thermostat powers the relay, and the relay provides power to what fans i use? How would i make the connections to the fans, and what would power them? Just trying to understand and clarify. Sorry if im asking to many questions.

I have very little experience with thermostats and how they work.

12V power supply/ transformer (basic unit -- some electronic units may require 24V)

Power to thermostat (tstat) - wire power to the N.O. switch

When tstat Temp is reached, the tstat switch closes -- this then powers the coil on external relay (control side)

Relay is activated, this closes the N.O. switch on relay output (load side)

Now you have power to your terminal strip -- to go to your fans

    N.O. = normally open switch

So i think this is how it will go. (if im wrong please all advice welcome) 120v plug in transformer. Transformer will power thermostat, thermostat will control relay, relay control fans on off.
here's what i've found so far.

    Transformer:     https://www.grainger.com/...p;kwid=productads-adid^50916777837-device^c-plaid^81031723797-sku^2HNG5-adType^PLA

Not sure about the relay yet

o.k. so just found this and thought this might simplify things a little.
Install a power strip in the cabinet. Everything is going to need to plug in anyways.  Use this device (seems to be everything i was going to build, already made into one device)
And use some sort of plug in usb, or fan hub into the temperature controlled outlet.
So what could i use in terms of using the temperature controlled recepticle to power fans? Or am i creating just as much work this way as well?

They have pc fan controllers with temp probs as well if that would be cheaper.. just have to install a cheap pc psu.

But would a pc fan controller require some sort of pc to control it? Or would providing just power to the fan controller make it work correctly?
Not sure what the defaults for the temp control would be without a program controlling it... will research this more.

Make sure your fans are the same Voltage & AC/DC as you power supply

Looking at your links  24V AC wall transformer -- will not power your 12V DC fans - (not directly at least)

I believe adjustments for temps and stuff would be done on the device but you should check to be sure.

That should do the trick, just plug a 12vdc power brick to that and connect the fan(s) ideally one for intake and one exhaust

Yea quadlatte, that's what i was thinking. And i saw after i linked the first transformer that it was 24v :l.
Will be sure to grab the 12v version, also cheaper.

Now just trying to decide on fans, Noctua just released some new 200mm fans i believe.

Thanks so far for all the help and suggestions. The project is a bit away from being started, but will be sure to add some photos when things start progressing.
