I've been at my current job for over 11 years. Just after I hit the 10 year mark, I got a "certificate of recognition" ...for 5 years of working there. I'm not kidding. No idea when or if I'll ever get one for hitting 10 years, maybe when I retire? - not that it matters, it was just a piece of paper printed off on the color printer at work and that's it, lol. Still no promotions for anyone in my area/level since I started there over 11 years ago, and the biggest pay rise we ever got in any year was 2% for everyone (with several years at 0%). No bonuses either - ever. No coffee. The only water supplied is tap water - we had to chip in ourselves to pay for a Keurig coffee machine and a filtered cold water thing. At least being NYC the actual base pay is pretty good, and they pay ~84% of our health insurance premiums as well. Everyone there has a minimum of Bachelors Degree btw.

In connection with the quarantine it is worth looking for work on the Internet. It is convenient and profitable. I do not see any other promising options.

400 isnt too shabby at all, long gone are the days of an engraved watch and pen set lol Long term dedication to a company seems to be the excepted norm these days rather than something to be rewarded or recognized

Probably some additional PTO accrual too. Not bad.

$400 is better than a kick in the rear i guess. Congrats on the retirement and may your next build last as long as you need it too!

I mean, it's not nothing. But I've seen how some companies celebrate people sticking around and working for them. I feel like there could've been more than this. Maybe even a little party or something..

So.. after almost 12 years, my employers finally decided to open a promotional management position - the first one since before I started working there over 11 & a half years ago. Everybody assumed I was the strong favorite due to prior management experience, 11+ years on the job, 2 degrees with honors, and the 2nd highest grade in the entire state for an exam qualification required for the position. Just found out they gave the job to someone else with zero management experience, much lower exam results (probably should not have even been qualified to interview), and apparently one college degree from many years ago. I'm aware of who got the promotion. You all heard about equity hires, right? I'm a white male. Do the math. I feel like I've just wasted over a decade of my life.

Oh, and when I returned to the office recently after telecommuting due to covid, one of the many items sitting on my desk was an envelope containing a certificate printed on our work printer congratulating me for 10 years of service. More than 18 months after the fact.

Not a happy camper.

Damn man, sorry to hear that.. That even hurt to read.. It's the same everywhere it turns out: Nepotism and favoritism ruining middle management. It's hard to see how some of these companies can keep functioning being so mismanaged.

More good proof that one should always take their retirement funds into their own hands.

Actually the US government needs to force companies to divest pensions in such a way as when a company goes bankrupt a pension is protected.

I think this is worth it's weight in gold over time if you plan to stick with a company.

At my work, after 5 years you get an extra week of PTO, then at 15 you get a final week added. Other than that you just do more and more and more work and get nothing. You can do 4-5 people's worth of work and get no recognition.
