I think it's possible that we will be graduating from 1.5mbps dsl to fiber before summer's at an end.  I'm not sure I'll know how to act with actual broadband.  I might just have to take some F.M.L.A. to get used to it as this will be like having a new family member.

Yee freaking haw!

P.S.  I wonder why the abbreviation for Family Medical Leave Act (without the periods) got flagged as a curse word.. LOL

It  flagged because without the A it means "Curse My Life".

If you remove the abbreviation for Act, you can probably guess.  The spam filter, with some manual exceptions, will flag certain words if it contains acronyms that contain swear words or abbreviated swear words.

I can remember when I went from dial up to broadband. What a blessing that was.

Ah, that makes sense. My internet lingo doesn't go much beyond LMAO. I still wonder why they call a number sign (#) a hash tag. Hash is either something you smoke or make with corned beef.

Yep, 1999 was my last year on dial up. I moved and the city I moved to had Road Runner broadband.

Wow enjoy - the move from DSL to high speed fiber will be like the difference between struggling through a pool of molasses and floating through air.

My first experience with the internet was a 2400 baud modem and the old bulletin board systems.  I remember dialing up and playing a text based adventure game and thought technology was such a wonderful thing.

I wrote a Dungeons and Dragons dice roll and hit percentage program in basic on a Radio Shack TRS-80 Color computer with 16KB of RAM in '84ish.  I Had to save it to cassette tape every time and ended up losing it to a glitch in the tape.  I was royally PO'd, typing all those tables into data strings was time consuming.

I remember using dial up back in 2000 and it being almost painfully slow and wondering why everyone was beating me at online games that a year or two earlier I used to rock at. It wasn’t until cable I realized why.

I quit the online games back when they used to ambush the spawn sites.  You'd pop up and instantly eat a rocket or something.  You're immune from attack for a few seconds after spawn now, right?

I remember these as well...*dial dial dial* ..*listen for tone*...*plug phone into sockets*...*wait 200 years for anything*...then I switch to an Apple // and got an Apple cat 300 Baud modem...which could do 1200 half duplex (with other apple cats)...it was SO FAST!.......heh..

No, it'll be late summer/early fall I expect.  This spring, they ran the fiber underground till they got to the creek at the bottom of the hill and stopped.  A month or so later, they set about half the poles to reach the telephone junction box that services us and stopped again.  They're watching this thread, tipping back a long neck and chuckling to themselves.  LOL

ahh yes fiber is a wonderful thing, I've gone through all stages, 9600 buad, 14.4, 28k then the big jump to a 56k isdn line, then 768 dsl then cable going from 2mb to my final speed of 100mb then AT&T 1gb fiber came to me and what a fine time it has been since. now i wish i could get 40gb fiber, used it at one job and wow...just wow

This fiber will cap out at best 100mb. That's the most they have in town.  It had to pass and service a 600 house development to get here, so I'm not expecting peak performance. Still, as long as it can stream 1080P on two TVs at once without buffering, I'll be very happy.

My friend at work just told me a story about Time Warner cable near him.
He lives in a semi-rural area just outside the city so all he has been able to get for years is DSL.

Lately he noticed his neighbor got cable & the guy across the way from him also... so he got the number of who serviced them and called in.

Time Warner told him to get his house cable service it would take their guys @  1000' ft of coax to run it over to him + labor .
Total cost would be  -- >  $ 8,000.00      yes, you read that correct.  They told him the cost would be eight thousand dollars just to have them run service line over to him ..... Then the additional money to sign a contract for speed levels he wanted.

Needless to say, he declined the offer ....

That's my situation.  I'm about a mile outside the city limits and a cul-de-sac with cable is about 300 yds from my back door, and passes about a 1/4 mile from the house down the road, but they won't bring it this way.

Well, it's 10 months later and we're finally getting 300Mbps fiber installed on Tuesday.  It's $20ish less than we currently pay for 1.3Mbps dsl now.  (I was 0.2 high on the OP) I could have 1Gbps for $10 more but I figure 300 will be more enough for 2 TVs streaming 4K.  I'm curious to see if we actually see 300 through our wifi which is a Ubiquity ac mesh system.  I'm so ready to not watch youtube at 360p (and wait for it to buffer at that) and get my streaming only TV going again.  I had it unplugged for so long that it forgot it was ever plugged in and went through the initial setup and update process when I turned it on this morning.

The theoretical cap for AC is well above 300Mbps.  Just have to see what the real world is considering a dozen things connected and what interference we see.  It's not a crowded area, I only see our network when the nic card looks for available connections.
