Funny you say that I use to have a 360 gamepad that would cause windows 7 to bluescreen, I ended up finding  a 360 dance mat at a thrift store for a dollar and replaced the usb end, worked fine after that.

I use ps4 controllers now with a Bluetooth dongle.

So far it looks as though I found the culprit which was the USB joystick. Of all the things it seems odd, but hey, its an easy fix and didn't require me to do a clean install of Win10. I'll keep testing throughout the week and provide an update.

On that note, can anyone suggest a decent joystick that seems to be working on their Win10?

Well, it looks like the USB Joystick isn't the issue :(

Got two freezes over the past two days of minimal use at night. I also had a weird freeze happen twice while using Google Chrome after submitting answers to a practice exam and the browser just said "waiting for available socket". Did a quick search on the issue which seems to pop up but just decided to uninstall Chrome for the time being. Anyways, going to try disconnecting my stereo setup and see if any changes occur. If not, I guess I'm looking at a clean install of Win10.

The saga continues...

So just did a fresh install of Win10 and already got a freeze. Starting to think the EVGA PSU I have is giving me trouble.

EVGA, most of my hardware is yours! Can I get some assistance in isolating the issue here?

Yeah, it's def the PSU or its your CPU vcore and ram sticks voltage, timing and command rate or all three together crashing you. If it's the PSU I suspect it's one of the lesser rails like the 3 or 5v I bet. What bios are you using cause if its the newer ones that could be your issue too. The newer ones for ivy bridge update were terrible for clocks and ram.

After reading this entire thread there is one more thing I'd like you to try. Swap out your hard drive SATA cable to the system drive. Look also in the device manager and tell me what you see under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller.

Re: Help Wanted: Cannot Isolate Computer Freezing 2017/03/12 06:34:55 (permalink)
wmmills, if you look on the first page I posted a vid showing the 12v rail being a little unstable. EVGA suggested swapping out the PSU after seeing the voltage dips so we are starting a RMA for the unit. Should have a replacement in a few days to test. As for my bios I'm running the original A118. I've definitely heard some negative feedback with the latest Bios versions so I'm going to hold off on updating that until I see if the new PSU fixes my issue. If not I'll likely update to version A121 which seems the most stable.

rjohnson11,
I'll try swapping the cable this morning and see if any changes occur. I'm pretty sure I already did this in the beginning but it's worth a shot. The one thing I'm getting that's annoying is a message on boot up stating no drive can be found yet it boots just fine. Seems this started happening after I was swapping around drives and haven't been able to get the message to go away. A quick google search revealed other people having the same message but no issues and just ignoring it.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

So I put in new sata cables and no dice. Still getting issues. At this point I think it's just a matter of trying out a new PSU and going from there.

Yes, I saw pic and your 5v rail concerns me the most but none of them are out of spec,Although this was just software measured and not multimetered. Change your ram command rate to 2, and the missing hdd thing you need to turn off in bios also, it should be a setting called pxe oprom ....disable thst. Save those and reboot.

The PXE OpRom is already disabled. Storage OpRom is currently enabled.

Changed the command to "2". Will test now to see if I get any crashing.

Sorry brotha, storage oprom is what I was shooting for for you to disable. Pxe should be disabled too though. You really need to update to the 121 bios when you get a chance, it's a much stabler revision and the best one for the sandy bridge chips.

Yeah I'll do the update for sure. I created a bootable drive however I need to figure out exactly how the files need to be copied. The tutorial here is old and all the images are no longer there.

So PSU is on its way thanks to EVGA's awesome customer service! Hoping to get it installed Wednesday/Thursday and do some testing.

Re: Help Wanted: Cannot Isolate Computer Freezing 2017/03/17 10:20:53 (permalink)
Received the PSU today. Unfortunately I'm stil getting freezes. I'm just about done with this damn thing at this point. I tried reseating the CPU and swapped the card and DVI cables, non of which made a change. At this point I'm really starting to wonder if the CPU or motherboard are giving up on me. My next course of action is to try updating the bios but I'm not sure how the files should be organized on my bootable USB drive.

Anyone out there have any further ideas for me?

Update: Ran Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool = Pass

Anyone know how the files are supposed to be organized on a bootable USB drive to do a Bios update?

So I finally was able to isolate what was giving me all the issues. Turns out my ssd was the cause. Switched out the ssd with another and all is well now.
