I'm having a merry go round with MSI support on my new build with a Tomahawk B450 using an EVGA SC Ultra RTX 2060 Super. I'm getting a fail on the post with the EzDebug showing a red error led on VGA.  I went through all the usual tests of BIOS updates, new PSU and even swapping out video cards with an older Radeon HD 7770 I had around.  All of which gave me the same error.  I have already swapped the motherboard out with the new MSI Tomahawk MAX.  To make a long story short the tech at MSI insists that the EVGA model I'm using may not be compatible and that I should try using an MSI GPU?  Are there any known compatibility issues with this EVGA model and the MSI Tomahawk?

But you said the amd card had the same error?

Did you make sure there isint a mb stand off touching the board where it shouldnt?

Strange stuff can happen if so.

To really eliminate the case i/o plate or mb standoff is hitting something it shouldn't.. one could power up the mb outside the case on a box.

Sometimes the case i/o plate can hold up the GPU from seating properly.

Either way a good practice is to also just have what's needed to post connected.. remove any hard drives or anything else.. just cpu (obvious) ram and gpu.

Yes, I checked the standoffs as that was one of my first suspicions. All there and solid. I'm down to replacing the Ryzen CPU and memory?  Although those passed the EzDebug test. MSI seems to be no help, although I'm doubting it's the motherboard with just having replaced it with a new one and getting the same results.

i just had the same issue with an asus board, the red light for cpu and memory would come on and go off like supposed to and then the red light for the vga would come on and stay on and never post like it was a bad video card, i tried 2 different vga and still same thing. It ended up being the bios for the mobo was hanging up and had to be reflashed, as soon as reflash was done on the motherboard all was good.

I flash drived the previous board a few times with updates and just got done doing a new update on the B450 MAX. Still, the same results, although I forgot to clear CMOS. The initial factory boot gave me a fail on post.

Well if you tried 2 different motherboards, and 2 different video cards on each board and getting the same issues i would be checking something different then, are the cpu and memory both new as well or are they something you were using prior to the new build?

Yeap, everything is brand spanking new.  I went with a pretty standard build using a Ryzen 2600x and the memory is 64GB of Patriot Viper Steel 3200 MHz.  For the reason, I was hoping to avoid the cutting teeth issues of the new Ryzen 3000 series.  If I had more hair, I'd be pulling it out right now!

Your using the PCIe slot closest to the CPU ?

GPU fully seated & parallel to MB PCIe socket & the little latch locked ?

Have you tried different power cables ? PCIe  & 24-pin & EPS power ?

Sometimes those Power cables get Tight before the are fully seated --> were the little locks in position ?

What is your experience level with building PCs ?  Asking because your New on the Forums

Your AMD have an iGPU (gpu in the CPU) ?  if so remove Card & BOOT to BIOS

Check, Using PCIe x1
Check, Fully locked and loaded, straight with power cables seated
Yes, switched power supplies from a brand new 600W EVGA B to a new fully modular 650W EVGA G5.
I've built a couple of other PCs in the past.
It's a Ryzen 2600x, not an APU. No onboard graphics.

I may have to end up taking it to a repair shop just to swap out some hardware. All I can think of right now is may very well be the CPU giving me the problem. I've tried the memory with one stick, two, and full house.  I've tested it by pulling everything off except for keyboard, mouse, GPU, CPU, M.2 drive and monitor.  Haven't tried a test bench test yet.

How did you update the mb bios? What gpu was in their for that? Ask cause you mentioned no igpu on the cpu.

If its like most of the newer boards you can flash bios without any cpu, or gpu in the motherboard via a usb port designated for bios flash.

The Tomahawk B450s have a flash BIOS button. You only need the PSU connected not even the CPU.  Just pop in a USB key with the latest update and hit the button.

Are you sure the bios flash is completing succesfully?

Can't be certain without seeing it post, but it went through the expected routine.  There is an indicator light on the board that shows it's receiving data and once the update completes it shuts down and reboots.

Did you format your flash drive to FAT32 and are you using a USB 3.0 or 2.0 flash drive?  I had an asus board that kept failing the flash tried several different bios and different USB 3.0 flash drives and always failed, switched over to a USB 2.0 flash drive and worked the first time.

Yes, double checked with Disk Manager. It's FAT32. Using a USB 2.0 flash drive.  Brand new SanDisk at the suggested 16GB max storage capacity. Downloads need to be renamed MSI.ROM.

Well when ya test it at a hardware store and it comes down to a msi mb not liking your evga card. What will ya do?

Though ya said the amd card was the same. Prob bad cpu since ya tested 2 different mb's.

Man that would be a first for me after 25 years playing around with pc's.

PC Picker has a thumbs up on compatibility.  I'm losing a little faith here with MSI.  I see a lot of issures with recent BIOS updates.  Their forum has a great bunch of guys helping out, but don't expect much from official tech support. I'll most likely send my board back if it comes down to that and order something different, that is, if it's not the EVGA GPU, which I doub't too since I already tested it against another.  I'm suspicious of the CPU as well, but will know more when I can have another one dropped in to test.  Thanks for the help!

Got to thinking about the one culprit I left in for testing.  My M.2 SSD and sure enough I pulled that out and got a satisfying post....finally!  What an ordeal, was focusing too much on the EzDebug VGA LED failure.  Did a quick change in the BIOS to set XMP at the 3200MGz configuration and now ordering a new M.2 so I can load the OS into it.  I hope this helps others, don't trust those little red lights, look at everything.  Thanks again guys!

Was the M.2 full inserted before any power was applied to MB ?

Glad you found the root cause & resolved the No BOOT issue ---> bad M.2 ssd

Better let the boys @ MSI know .... there MB does this
