Cryptocurrency mining has made getting your hands on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30-series card or an AMD Radeon RX 6000 series card extremely difficult. Hard drives and SSDs may be the next component to face a shortage. According to the latest HKEPC report, an emerging cryptocurrency, Chia, is mined with storage space and miners in China are buying up hard drives and SSDs at an alarming rate. The new Chia cryptocurrency is unlikely any other relying on storage space in hard drives and SSDs. Bitcoin relies on a proof of work model whereas Chia relies on a proof of space and time model. The motivation to create Chia was to make a more environmentally-friendly cryptocurrency. The man behind Chia is Bram Cohen, the creator of BitTorrent, and he wants to use the available space on storage devices for his cryptocurrency since SSDs and hard drives consume less power, are cheaper, and readily available compared to the power-hungry and hard to find GPUs used to mine Ethereum. https://wccftech.com/hard...yptocurrency-succeeds/

From an environmental impact standpoint, I think it is an improvement. The environmental impact of manufacturing the hardware becomes less and less significant over time, as the environmental impact of the proof-of-work model adds up over time. The logic is sound from an environmental impact standpoint and from a value standpoint. If this cryptocurrency succeeds, its crashes in value will be somewhat stabilized by investments people made in hardware; just like other cryptocurrencies. I think that the real question for this cryptocurrency (and the others) is whether it will be adapted as a serious currency which is mostly used as a currency, or whether it will be mostly traded based on speculation like all the others.

The motivation to create Chia was to make a more environmentally-friendly cryptocurrency. Sure we're not reading The Onion here? "Environmentally friendly" is code phrase for "I want you to redistribute the wealth of one old-school billionaire corporation to my newer start-up billionaire corporation as a shell game and make you feel good about it." The motivation for making crypto is taking control and regulation away so people can exploit the volatility of it at your loss. When you can write the rules and framework of how something works, you can exploit it. Never play a game by someone else's rules when you can write your own.

just to inform you guys that here in Portugal one of the 3 main tv/net services provider is not selling "new" contracts anymore. why? router shortage all around and everyone at home wants the better router because "its faster and better"! well guess what? not gonna happen with no new router... most current clients have to stick with 5 or more year old routers because the new ones are just not being delivered. new clients? being given older routers as well it seems.. think they are askey brand and i was already told for a fact this is not isolated to MY internet service provider as all others here in Portugal having the same problem. so.. its global!and the clients have no clue about this . no clue at all... the struggle is real and sooner or later.. i expect the same for most pc parts + tv's + smartphone's etc.. etc... and alike.... i am in need of another 4TB HDD X300 from toshiba... and i think im gonna pull the trigger SOON ( end of this month perhaps) so i can get it for 110euros because if i do it later... ill have pay double or triple.. or i wont even have a new HDD good luck to you all!

I already posted the story about router shortages a while back. The semiconductor shortage is going to affect everything. The only good news is that automotive chip manufacturing should get better in the 2nd half of 2021.

Retailers are pushing prices higher due to demand and I'm afraid things will stay that way for a while.

already pulled the trigger on the 4TB X300 HDD for total 113,8 euros (shipping included) did it exactly 2 BUSINESS days ago... and the that thing is still "in process".. never saw a HDD taking so much time to "process" !! I mean.. you grab it from the warehouse and put it inside a box and then ship it to the client home... i fear there is no stock already...
