There seem to be a few conflicting opinions on this subject, what is yours? I just purchaced a new monitor for my son and it came with both a HDMI cable and a DP cable, which should I use?

DisplayPort allows for higher data bandwidths than HDMI. With many modern higher-end monitors, you have to use the DP cable to get full use of the monitor, as HDMI would limit bandwidth.

I've had good luck with Display Port, and find it more reliable if you have a monitor that allows to be overclocked.  (Gsync 165mhz)

HDMI is going to be a dead technology soon enough.

    It'll be the next:

Ahh RCA, I miss those colors so much I still have a number of cables in my "just in case box"  I keep reading that HDMI is not going any time soon.

Is this something I should download now before I change to DisplayPort or wait to see if there is a problem first?

You won't need the update since the monitor is dp 1.2

I had to use DP version 1.3 cable for my AOC AGON to use g-sync and to clock to 100Hz.

be warned DP can be finicky, on one of my monitors ( a dell ) it is super picky on cable and ports plus it really hates if it is unplugged while running, have to unplug the power for 5 minutes before the DP ports will work again, my second monitor ( a HP ) could care less, both are DP 1.2.

My son has been using HDMI the whole time till i switched to DP while he was at work without telling him, so far he hasn't said a thing (it's been a few days) so I am guessing all is well so far.

Just make sure you buy a quality DP cable that is certified.

I'm using the DP cable that came with the monitor, I hope it's a good one....
