Nice chip, not worth $999.99 though. Ill stick with an i5 dual-core 650 with HT at 4.7 Ghz on air with a P55 board.

but clock-per-clock, core-per-core, the Gulftown is not much faster than Core i5 or Core i7 processors. Professional users stand to benefit a great deal from the additional 2 cores and Hyperthreading support, but this is clearly not a CPU for gamers and regular consumers.

Yeah, there's not much out there that pushes my i7 anywhere near its limit, I don't really feel a need for 2 more cores.  But, as noted in the review, the i9 isn't really intended to be a gamer/enthusiast cpu, it seems pretty much aimed squarely at the server/professional demographic.

Still, looks impressive and bodes well for the next gen enthusiast cpu down the road.

It is.  1366 is essentially a server platform that has been expanded to the high-end enthusiast segment.

What's with all this i9 stuff? It's a Gulftown until Intel calls it an i9 on release. Also, Shamino already benched samples and got past these guys, so yay Shammy!

Yea at 7+Ghz on L2N, how many people do you think will buy this "i9" Cpu for $999 for just 2 more cores?

Probably about as many as spent $1000+ on i7 965 &/or 975. lol

Just because it's impractical, overpriced, and overrated doesn't mean there's not a market for it.   The top of the high-end segment will shell out for whatever bleeding edge technology they can get their hands on.  But again, it's likely Intel will market this primarily to the professional/server segment, so any consumer level sales would be icing on the cake.

Our friends from PClab.pl have managed to score a sample of Intel's upcoming Gulftown Core i9 processor. Intel's 32nm, 6-core beast was put through its paces on three motherboards and the PClab crew compared the results to Core i5, Core i7, Core 2 Quad and Phenom II parts.

As expected, the 6-core clocked at 2800MHz made short work of the competition in all multi-core optimized benchmarks, but clock-per-clock, core-per-core, the Gulftown is not much faster than Core i5 or Core i7 processors. Professional users stand to benefit a great deal from the additional 2 cores and Hyperthreading support, but this is clearly not a CPU for gamers and regular consumers.

One of the major upshots of the new 32nm process is a significant reduction in power consumption. In most scenarios, Gulftown uses less juice than Core i7 and Core 2 Quad parts, which means a great deal in server applications. At 42°C it was also the coolest CPU in the test. PClab did not complete their overclocking tests and claim they'll have another go at it. However, they managed to squeeze out 4.3GHz on air, without much effort.

    Check it out here.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

What is wrong with 2 cores 4 threads for gaming? Most games benifit from higher clock speeds than more cores anyways. The i5 650 running at 4.7 Ghz on air wich has already been done would be great on a P55 mobo with one GTX 380.

But, as noted in the review, the i9 isn't really intended to be a gamer/enthusiast cpu, it seems pretty much aimed squarely at the server/professional demographic.

Still, looks impressive and bodes well for the next gen enthusiast cpu down the road.

I thought the i9 was for the X58 board, socket 1366? Mabey I am wrong.

First: there is no i9, it is just that a rumor spread and everyone (including those who make CPU-Z updates, being the reason why the name is identified in relating Gulftown to i9, they had to program it in ) suspects or just wants the name i9 (even though it will likely be an i7 as there is nothing architecturally and dramatically different between Westmere and Nehalem to change the same).  I advise refering to the CPU by the official Intel codename: Gulftown for LGA1366, which happens to be shared across X58 and 5500/5520 server chipsets.  They will be identical, both ones called "Core i" and the probable Xeon 5600 series, and can be interchanged (unlike Bloomfield and Gainestown CPUs).  Once EVGA supports one Gulftown type, they'll all work.  No one will be stuck on a $999 CPU, or the highway, if they want a 32nm LGA1366 part.

Second, the words "intended for", and "meant for" are not restrictive in use or function, except by BIOS.  Anyone who wants Gulftown(s) can get them, enthusiasts and gamers aren't so different from workstation users (both use high-end CPUs and multiple high-end graphics), hence why Intel lumped all single-socket people into X58, but away from P55, etc.  Those that want dual-socket can get an Intel 5500/5520 chipset board; none overclock though.

Besides, in the server world, dual-socket is mainstream; higher-end simply has more CPUs (and Nehalem Beckton 6- and 8-core CPUs for quad-socket is coming for them).  By comparison, Gulftown would be used for mainstream or low-end server uses too.

Is it just me or did the quotes go all wrong in this post, Nm I just saw that you edited it

I will continue to refer to Gulftown as i9. If you google anything about Gulftown you will also get i9 in the same sentence. I believe this is what the Cpu will be called. I could be wrong.

That's because if you traced the source of every result in searches of i9 and Gulftown, you'll eventually reach either Techpowerups or Wikipedia (that also referenced from Techpowerups)*.  Except that Techpowerups claimed they got the name i9 from the Chinese site Inpai.com, in which they claim to have gotten it from Hexus.net.  If you read the Hexus.net article, you clearly see they made up the name.  Look at the language, it went from "hearsay" to "to be called" in less than 3 days.  Not even Intel's own branding reveals an i9, in which this blog by their communications manager started the whole thing (look at the publish dates of all links).

    * (Fudzilla claimed to have independently discovered the name i9, 6 days later; but there is no way their source was not affected by all the news going around unless they lived in a box.)

I get the impression few really research rumors; you got to dig, don't just take them for face value.

** More than likely, X58 Gulftown will be another Core i7, either 9xx again or a 1000-series part.  If it ends up as an i9, I call it independent invention, as the chances someone makes up something then becomes the case are slim to none (unless you want to use the logic it was called that all along, which I don't buy based on the evidence).

i will not be sending back my i7 975 or selling it for the "i9" but 6 cores will have its advantages for media editing.

what i would like to see is a dual 1366 motherboard with PCIe x 16 slots...
that thing would get crazy benching scores.

asus has one but its a server-like board.

You are not waiting and seeing if you have already made up your mind to call it an "i9".   It's a Gulftown for X58, that's an Intel codename for 32nm 6-core plus an intended market -- but if that's too much to type or remember...

All dual 1366's are meant for server market, but that doesn't mean if someone wanted to bench or game with it they can't.  They can if they wanted as function doesn't restrict use.  Except we cannot stick dual i7's in such a board as they lack an additional internal QPI link to communicate with the other CPU.  CPUs meant for two-way carry a major premium, as much as 50% (W5590 is a dual-way 975, but costs $1600 each).
