Hello, I recently noticed that my gtx 970 is running at 61°C while idle. The fans will go to around 150rpm for like a second and once the card becomes 60°C they stop completely. This repeats and repeats until I get in a game. While playing BF4 my temps never went above 74°C. I have a 144hz monitor and the gpu clock is 1050mhz while idle. Any input on what I could do to stop the idle temperature from being so high?

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forums. Most of the EVGA GTX 970 cards will have a 0DB mode so the fans will kick on until the card is running at 60c+. The temperatures you are getting both under load and idling are perfectly normal. It is very possible that the higher refresh rate on the monitor is keeping the fan frequency relatively high. If you notice that putting the monitor to 60hz allows for lower frequencies then the higher refresh rate is pushing up the idle frequency. This is a particularly common issue if it keeps the card at higher frequencies after exiting a game.

Ok thats what I had thought, acx 2.0 will not turn on the fans until 60c+. However, with the fans turning on and off constantly, does that have any bad long term affect on the card? Is it normal for the card to be 60c without the fans spinning in a pretty well cooled case. I am in a finished basement so its always cool down here. Also, what should my gpu clock be near while gaming? I am still not 100% sure about all this stuff. Thanks

Realistically the long term life of the card will should not be effected. The card really only cares about the load temperatures, try to keep those under 90C. The fans themselves will have little difference, the cycling on and off will have little effect. It is like the electric fan on a car radiator, that will turn on and off as the thermostat tells it to and those can often go 20 years or so.
Except that under load the card is running at about 1250Mhz+

it would drive me crazy to have my temp at 60c while at idle, you can use precision to set a custom curve, fans will still be pretty quite up to about 1600rpm or so, right now mine are at 1200rpm with a gpu temp of 28c, i did a mod to my vbios though so the fans are always on.

Set the monitor to 120Hz within Windows - it's a known Nvidia bug that has been around since 144Hz monitors became a thing, and I doubt it's going to be fixed.

In games just set the refresh rate to 144.
