now that the plastic is removed, my GPU clocks consistently stay boosted to 1947 with tolerable fan acoustics/low temps =)

It protects the heatfins.

Also, the card is designed to blow all heat out the rear of the case. Doing it this way dumps some heat into your case. If you have even decent case cooling, then this is definitely a great option

It made a difference because of the mounting of the GPU

in this set up with the card standing on a riser, heat is trapped in the top of the shroud and dragged into the fan before being thrown back at the heatsink.
taking the plastic piece out allows cooler air to be drawn into the top of the shroud and displace the hot air as it is pulled in.

With it mounted normally in a mainboard pci-e slot, the hot air doesn't accumulate, it spreads across the width of the board and is pushed out with air drawn into the fan from below.

Dunno why people think HH is angry...I read it as he doesn't understand (or believe) and is asking for clarification
so that he can reconcile the information..

At any rate...nice vid...if I ever get a new machine and a FE 1080 I'll have to try it.

Why not just buy a FTW? OR, other custom fan solution? I see you have the FE, did they not have ICX cards when you got yours?

With the plastic window off, it really looks super awesome (IMO).

Sorry to dredge up old posts, but this is literally the only post of its kind I could find. Did anyone ever test the 1080 ti FE in the PCI slot, and not on the Riser? I would imagine nothing but positives from opening the card, but I can certainly imagine the riser helping more with the window open than the PCI slot position.

I just did it. I was getting, prior to performing this "mod", temps of 85-89c w/ the fan almost at 70% and performance was suffering due to temp throttling. For example in Black Ops 4 Multiplayer I was barely pushing 60-70 FPS.

In prep I took the shroud off, removed the heatsink, and replaced the thermalpaste with some Noctua NT-H1. I then replaced everything, including the window and tested.

Same frames and temps were holding at 85C

I then removed the plastic window and the difference was mind blowing. I still can't believe it worked this well. I'm now pushing 140+ FPS in Black Ops 4 and temps max out at 57C.

I run the settings @ Max in game (only 1920x1080 144hz).
GTX 1080 Ti is now running custom fan curve that will max at 55% and the Power is set to 110% in MSI Afterburner w/ no OC. I let boost do all the work. -

I'll post a 3DMark Run in Firestrike soon.
