Good News for Nvidia RTX 3090 and PS5 Restock: Top Chip Provider Plans to Inject $100 Billion Capital to Fix Global Shortage | Tech Times

Gamers crawling to purchase the new Nvidia RTX 3090 or even the new PS5 restock have suffered an extremely scarce year. The top global chip manufacturer, however, might be making moves that could bring the shortage to an end!

TSMC has promised that it will spend a whopping $100 billion over the next three years to increase the total capacity of its production facilities. The Wall Street Journal also noted that it will be a new investment record for not just the company but for the entire industry. According to PhoneArena, TSMC actually takes the chip designs from Intel, Apple, AMD, MediaTek, and other companies. Due to the massive demand for 5G chips and chips for Nvidia RTX 30 series and the new PS5 restock, manufacturers have struggled to keep up with the supply.

According to CEO C.C. Wei, despite utilizing the company's fabs at over 100%, TSMC still can't keep up with the strong client demands. The company is now even hiring thousands of new employees and expanding the overall production capacity. Pierre Ferragu, a New Street Research analyst, notes that the whopping $100 billion, which TSMC plans to spend over three years, is now double what they had to spend the last three years. The company also explained the main reason for doubling its budget because TSMC is now working very closely with customers to address their needs more sustainably.

During the start of 2021, it was said that the capital expenditures are expected to range around $25 billion to $28 billion mostly as the company would get ready to ship out new 3nm chips some time next year. Some time last year, TSMC launched chips that were produced with a 5nm process node starting with the 2020 Apple A14 Bionic.
The smaller the whole process node, the larger the number of transistors that can fit into a fixed square mm, which would make the components much more powerful and even energy-efficient. Building certain new lines to be able to produce 3nm chips is a huge expensive task.

Back in November, TSMC was able to complete the plant structure for its very own 3nm fab at the whole Southern Taiwan Science Park or STSP. The competition is also spending a lot of cash. Intel has just recently announced that it would spend a whopping $20 billion in order to build two different chip factories in the US back in 2024. Intel, which were once bragging about having a three-year lead compared to rivals, is now finding themselves behind foundries just like TSMC and even Samsung when it comes to the process node of their very own cutting-end chips. Samsung, which is now the second-largest contract foundry in the world, is planning to shell out $116 billion by 2030 to be able to diversity its whole production chips.

In my personal opinion this is not going to fix supply issues for this fiscal year.

It's a lot of money to spend at $100 billion but the key thing is "Over 3 years" by that time the PS5  and 3090 shouldn't be in short supply I would hope. 2024 is still a long way away.

Nothing is going to change over the next 5 years regardless of how much money they spend on increased production. They could inject $$500 TRILLION into production but unless the industry eradicates 100% of all scalpers/crypto miners world-wide, nothing will change. Consumers will still have a hard time locating decent priced GPUs.

A year ago, no issues getting any GPU. Once the crypto scammers raised the prices for its value, GPUs were impossible to obtain at decent MSRP. All this injection of money is going to do is allow the big crypto miners to invest more heavily & deplete stocks. Instead of them buying $30 million worth they would be able to buy several hundred million & further deplete stocks faster.

I don't know that it's purely the scalpers/cryptomoron..err ..miners...the virus certainly played a part by slowing resource gathering/distribution and fabricating....

The miners and scalpers certainly aren't helping, but by the same token, the people BUYING from scalpers also contribute to the problem by SUPPORTING
scalpers doing what they're doing...I know it sucks, but if scalpers eat their shorts on a couple of PC components, they will be less likely to try again.

People can't be patient anymore, tho.

Not sure what this does for current supplies, but it seems that the 50 or 60 series chips may get a boost.  Unfortunately, the next three years will have supply issues, as I expect this is the “new normal” when it comes to chips in general.  Seems the pandemic accelerated something that was bound to happen a few years down the road, as no one was prepared for a spike or surge in demand.

I think the price increase to ~$60K for 1 bitcoin had 100% to do with the surge in demand for GPUs :o)

This wont fix the shortage now🙄🤦

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

What a clickbait article... TSMC's three-year plan to spend $100B on new fab capacity was already reported. In fact TSMC, SK Hynix, and Samsung are all spending 100B each or more. Make's Intel's investment of $20B look tiny.

In three years NVIDIA will have already launched Lovelace, people will be hawking that instead of overpriced 3090's.

They meant 5090 by the time this money is spent.
