Property taxes and fuel taxes shouldn't be co-mingled.  One has nothing to do with the other.... but I bet they'll try!

Exactly.

redteamgo
In the same stroke, $1 says DC allows tax exemptions that favor multifamily non-individual owners or corporate ownership in order to create more demand destruction.

Hmm.. in which case it might be cheaper to register a corporation and put the vehicle ownership under the corp, depending what state you live in - some states charge franchise fees - but then again, you don't have to register a corp in the same state you live in, so that's easily avoided.

The reality: the virtue-signalling power-hungry corruptocrats have not though about ANY of these consequences whatsoever, that much appears obvious.

Ideally the only fair way would be to reflect the loss in gas taxes by significantly increasing the yearly cost to register an EV - but that would probably drive people away from buying EV's, so of course other people will have to shoulder the burden instead.

"road tax" the EV based on a basic flat rate with surcharge for excess mileage is the only fair solution

Flat rate - something like (national average miles per year) divided by 30 MPG x the Fuel tax of the equivalent gallons + for any extra miles @ first registration & then renewals

Gas tax has increased over the years as C.A.F.E. has been increased - to make up some of the short fall in revenue

Many/ most of the tourists in my area, never buy any fuel in my state, yet they clog the roads every weekend & several week days.  The newer cars can easily go 300 miles round trip on a single tank of fuel.

EV owners already get a large (subsidy) tax break - if they purchase an early unit of an EV, then pay no road tax (no fuel based) for road maintenance & in some areas they even get free or lower toll rates - that are supposed to be for maintenance.

The reality: the virtue-signalling power-hungry corruptocrats have not though about ANY of these consequences whatsoever, that much appears obvious.

this truly is the case.  it is disgusting.  consequences, practicality, fairness, governance and even legality have all been forgotten.

some predictions for a sunday :P

prediction: if DC follows through on student loan debt forgiveness, demand curve on housing will shift right.  lets take bets on who's fault that will be?  generously paid academics?  will it be russia?  truckers?  no!  I think they will go with blaming the nuclear family for the selfishness of occupying SFHs.  its a safe target and a good controversy because generally a nuclear family doesn't want to blow themselves up in some media frenzy so not much push back.

prediction: fed makes good on more rate hikes?  used:new pricing ratio will remain high for the foreseeable future.. yes.  But used:new price may actually invert depending on internal combustion technological inhibitors forthcoming in the name of DOT regulations and climate regulation.  if that full sequence occurs, it will be very sensitive since it will be contrary to several political narratives: energy, climate, economic prosperity, monetary policy.  no one country will sacrifice itself for the sake of appearances and the chain will come undone.

The day we have a successful/competitive flying electric plane and driving electric truck, is the day I will say fossil fuel might have its days numbered. It's a dream for some, but an impracticality for anything more than a demo or a heavily subsidized gimmick.

Electric has its benefits and uses, but can't dethrone fossil fuel at this time. It's a niche thing for commuters at the moment.

Not attacking your statement - just using it for my amusement since you mentioned the gimmick. the flying car concept as an applied method of travel is so comical.

Right now the average moron can barely stay in their lane and keep their bald tires from blowing out on the way to buy cigarettes etc.

On top of that we are going to ask them to 1) pay for a jet car (lol), 2) maintain their jet car (double lol), 3) stay in their x/y lane not just their x lane (triple lol) and 4) update federal, state and local governments to regulate flying cars (big lol) and 5) insura….. nevermind let’s not even go there.

The implementation is impossible at scale. The cost / regulatory burdens will be exempted and reserved for the wealthy. Everyone else will be hoofing it or taking the bus.

Good times

The very recent drop in price is just a red herring.  We are depleting our strategic reserves @ 1mn barrels per day and predictions are that we will be at a 40 year low by Sept or Oct.  What happens when those reserves dry up and global tensions continue to escalate?  We could see prices skyrocket way past what they even are now.

^ Posted back in June and now here we are.    Strategic reserves depleted and gas prices picking back up where we left off a few months back and the war in Ukraine continues to escalate.

Reg $6.89 here in LA.   Some stations over $7 per gallon.  At the same time OPEC just announced 2 million barrel cut in production.  I expect to see prices north of $8 by next week.

CA is its own worst enemy .... most of the pain at the pump in CA is self-imposed, refinery maintenance is an issue that should never come as a surprise

Commodities Corner Why California is paying nearly 70% more for gasoline at the pump than the rest of the country

Even as high as taxes are here in NY gas is 3.69 or so for regular. What gets me is why is 93 high test 1.50 more a gallon than regular gas. No good reason for that at all
And no good reason gas should be 2 dollars a gallon more in California except well it’s California!

Oregon went back over $5. Still hasn’t really hurt me and my hybrid.

I do think with California, Washington and Oregon going electric by 2035 it will change the market. The only thing I don’t know now is how renters will handle the electric future. It’s a big savings to park in a garage and just charge up an electric car overnight but not practical for those that live in an apartment.

It's likely going to get a lot worse with OPEC restricting production. Can't believe US is going to go begging to Venezuela. 18 months ago I would not have believed the US could have fallen into such a bad position in such a short time on so many levels. Shocking.

The sad reality is going "Green" is not cost effective for the masses without subsidies.  Especially in a market driven economy that's driven by profits.  ROI will cancel short/medium term technology gains so there goes the "new tech will save us" spin.  I wish we had a realistic plan for reducing fossil fuels than wishful thinking policies.

Hawaii will phase out energy production using fossil fuels by 2045.  Uh... sure....  But our gas prices are still lower than CA.

Subsidies just mean we still have to pay, only via another route. Whatever the government subsidizes, it still comes out of our pockets - either by increased taxes or by decreased funding somewhere else. It's basically a giant ponzi scheme where everyone is being forced to pay.

The masses need to realize how much the government subsidizes many things from ag to tech, not just social services.  Releasing the oil reserves makes a small dent in the market driven pricing so deminishing returns for "feel good" superficial patch fixes.

We want our cake and eat it too.  At least this is a minor distraction from the lack of halo card inventory at launch.

Gas is at $6.39 a gallon right now, when I last posted it was at around $4.50 a gallon (91 Octane) This was a bit over a year ago, But I actually got rid of my 2019 6.4L Charger Daytona, Got a 4 Cylinder Mercedes-Benz, But then even went further and got a 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid which is LOVELY during these times.... Gas lasts me forever.

The current administration releasing more oil from the national reserve is just an attempt to keep prices in check until after the mid-term elections, nothing more (and certainly not what it was intended for). When that runs out, and reduced supply from OPEC starts to really take effect, prices are going to get a lot worse. Watch the finger-pointing then. So predictable.

Loving the hybrid right now.

I have really liked my hybrid mine is a 2015 Ford C-Max. It's great to get 576 miles per fill up for about $54 here since that lasts me over a month. I also like that the oil change is only once a year on it or every 10,000 miles.

One thing I recently did that might be good for others is get a digital tire inflator. I just set the pressure I want the tire inflated to put it on the tire and turn on the pump. When it hits the set pressure it goes slightly above it to account for what is lost removing it from the valve and turns off. It should help my tires last longer and improve my fuel efficiency.  Using it on two cars I figure if gas stays around $5 it will pay for itself within a year and that is not factoring in the increased life of tires as long as I remember to inflate the tires monthly.

I also was thinking that one thing we are likely to see is mph will start to have a new meaning in the near future. Instead of being a reference of speed a car can travel I think EV and plug in hybrids will start to market how far you can travel on one hour plugged into a home charger. If they get people to see 1 hour can result in 4 gallons of gas for a conventional gas engine worth of driving it really changes minds on EV cars instead of focusing on taking a empty battery to 100% that can take several hours.

Let us not forget that it is diesel trucks that bring gasoline to the gas stations and restock store supplies.
