'Realistic possibility' $48m esports tournament could be held in NZ, says gaming tycoon Gabe Newell | 1 NEWS | TVNZ

Gabe Newell who is currently residing in New Zealand has recently confirmed in a new interview that his company Valve "definitely has games in development that they're going to be announcing". With the positive release of Half-Life: Alyx the company plans to create further single-player games and Gabe noted that there is a lot of momentum within Valve to do so.

Gabe Newell has been living with his family in New Zealand since early 2020 when they decided to stay in the country after a holiday due to the countries successful management of COVID-19. He has now been granted New Zealand residency in principle and is actively considering transferring Valve operations and major events to the country. This includes hosting the companies DOTA 2 and CS:GO annual esports tournaments which had to be canceled in 2020 and "strong interest" from employees for relocation.

It should be noted that Newell didn't have anything to say about a possible Half-Life 3 or Portal 3 game. I was personally hoping for this type of game.

If he likes money he would green light Half Life 3 and Portal 3.

Really given the age of Half Life it might be good to do a whole remake of the storylines of the first two games. Keep what worked and what was important and ditch some parts that didn’t work. Part of the problem if they did a remake is the game was groundbreaking for its time but now most games have puzzle aspects beyond Half Life.

Wow, the bigger news is he's considering moving Valve to New Zealand. Can't really blame him when the US spent a year ignoring reality as it's covid policy, but yikes. That's a major corporate loss.

Very glad to see he's considering moving The International to NZ though, not having it last year was a huge financial blow to Valve, and severely affected Dota 2 e-sports as a whole. It had originally been planned to held last August in Sweden.

Black Mesa already beat them on HalfLife 1.
I thought there's already an undistributed HalfLife 2 remake.
I think there's a streamer that did a walk-thru with the undistributed version.
I would pay for that.  There's lots of money on the table already for anything HalfLife-ish.
I would love for HalfLife 3 or Portal 3. (Though I haven't played their BridgeConstructor thingie)

At this point it time and after seeing the games that have come to fruition after years of high expectations I'd rather them just leave Half-Life and Portal alone. Go make Artifact 2 or something lolol

Apparently not going to be Artifact 2.0 either, because Valve just ended work on the unfinished version and released it as a free update to the original Artifact.
