I just got my GTX970FTW (with the ACX 2.0 fan system) and updated all the drivers and, using the GeForce Experience, optimized my game settings. I was trying to join a game of Battlefield 4 and as I spawned in my system just shut off. It turned itself back on a few seconds later and booted normally. I recalled having a similar issue years ago with a different video card and that was definitely a weak power supply. Today I'm using a 750W PSU and after looking at the specs for the card and my computer over all it should be more than enough. So I'm wondering if the fans on the video card didn't kick in and so it overheated causing the system to shut down to save the day since they say that they "will not turn on until they are needed to cool the card." I don't know if they even kicked in before the system shut down. Anyone got an idea as to what my problem may be??

Update: I downloaded and installed the PrecisionX software and set the thing so the fans are running, keeping the GPU cool like they should be. When that didn't solve my problem I tried reverting to the previous in-game settings and this time when I loaded into a game the system didn't shut down. That gives me the feeling that my PSU is not good enough to run the card with all the video settings running at the max the GeForce Experience says it can. Does anyone agree with this assessment? I was so certain that my 750W PSU was enough but now I doubt.

Your PSU should definitely be good enough. I had a GTX 970 FTW too and now a FTW+ and I can run SLI on a 630W PSU.
If your PSU wasn't a problem before and is not defect then it probably isn't the problem.

You can try logging to file in GPU-Z or looking at precision X while playing and then look what temperature your card reached and how fast the fans were running.
If your temperature is below 80° C and the fans are running at around ~30% speed after playing some minutes your card isn't overheating.

What is the make and model of the psu and how old is it? In fact what are the rest of your system specs and is your cpu overclocked? Many people have issues with installing the complete list of NVidia drivers instead of just the graphics driver and PhysX driver, especially with GeForce exp. Also, your driver install/uninstall procedure can contribute to issues too.

My PSU is a Thermaltake Smart m750W. It isn't more than a year old. I had to get a new one when the old one died on me. I'm running an i5-2400 @3.10GHz. RAM is 16GB (4X4GB) @1600MHz of DDR3 from Corsair. I have one SSD, a Samsung 840EVO, for my primary with a standard HDD, Maxtor @7200RPM, for a backup. My MoBo is an Asus P8P67 Deluxe. Nothing is overclocked. I've never had the guts to do that. I'm also using a Cooler Master HAFX for a case. It's got plenty of flow through ventilation and fans running on front, top, back, and side. The side one is actively blowing on the video card and CPU.

As for the drivers, I do the custom install and don't install the 3D drivers. I don't need them. I also uninstalled the old driver from the previous card before I installed the new card and used the Experience to get to the driver I have now.

I thought it might the video card drawing more power than my PSU could handle when I tried getting into BF4 last night and the system shut off. The Experience updated a lot of the graphical settings to Ultra or High from things like Medium and Low. My thought was that with the new settings the card was pulling in more power to process the new settings and it overextended the PSU causing the shut down.

If that is not the case I would love any recommendations as to what I can do to further solve my problem.

If the GPU overheats, normally the screen turns blank, the GPU fans spin up to ful speed, and the computer doesn't turn off/restart (computer stays "on").

Usually a restart is caused by either a bad power supply, an overheating CPU, or a Windows crash (memory issue or other hardware failure). What are the CPU core temperatures? What does the Windows event log say (Kernel-power or some other critical error message)?

Try downclocking your card about 100mhz in EVGA PrecisionX to see if the clock is stable.  If the PC is fine there, then you can RMA the card and the next card shouldnt have an issue.  Another thing you could try is if your CPU is overclock then that needs to stop at this point.

When it did it the first time I looked into the event log and it said Kernel-power, Event ID 41. That's the event log entry for every attempt I made with the higher video settings. When I tried joining a game with the higher game settings the system power just died. It was like the power failed in the house but it was just the PC that went out. It also turned itself back on a few seconds later. That's why I'm thinking it's the PSU more than anything.

To answer a different question from a different post, my CPU is running at around 36C when idle. I don't think it ever got high enough to trigger a shutdown when in-game.

Sounds like a power supply failure.

Kernel-power is just a generic event triggered on the next boot after an unexpected power-down. Basically, all Kernel-power tells you is that "the system is booting up and the last shutdown wasn't normal".

If a software issue triggered the reboot, you should see something in the event log other than Kernel-power. You should have seen a critical error with address spaces leading to that critical issue. Since you don't have any such event in the log, I think it is safe to say that you have a hardware issue, not a software issue. Most likely the power supply.

Update: I swapped out my PSU for a new 1200W bad boy and I then re-optimized the settings in BF4 and have successfully played a couple hours of the game with the new higher settings. I would say that my 750W for some reason or other just couldn't handle the GTX970 FTW. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions and help!

I'm glad I bought that 900W PSU before purchasing my 970 SSC ACX 2.0 :p
