Hi I have a rig with a GTX1070 FTW video card. It started to not wake from sleep. I shut off all of the power saving features. No help. After many restarts, it would output video. I thought it might be the monitor, so changed to my old one. No help. Updated to latest driver package. No help. Removed card, removed drivers and reinstalled card using 411.70 drivers due to some bugginess reported in forums. No help. Removed card and used onboard video. Works fine, sleeps correctly etc. Everything points to video card. I am not sure whether to try a bios update, or to RMA the card. Suggestions? Asus Z170-A Mobo , I5-6600, Corsair CS-M 650 PSU, Corsair Vengeance Ram, 850 Evo SSD. Thanks, Doug

Thanks for the reply. I removed the HD sound drivers, and reinstalled the video card. Unfortunately, I seem to have broken something on the motherboard with all of the installing/removing of the video card. The computer no longer boots. I will try to reseat components, but this is probably going to get expensive....... Thanks, Doug

Yeah..... Maybe it's time to be like the cool kids and try out a Gen 8 or 9 Core I3 or I5.

I just went from a AMD Phenom II 1090T processor to a i5 8600k. The 8600k is easily overclocked to 4.5GHz and the performance is 3x my old CPU. Worth the effort, although you will have the joy of Windows reactivation to deal with, no doubt.

When I explained the problem and explained what troubleshooting I had done, EVGA issued an RMA. My 1070 is on its way back. I should have a replacement next week. I have been waffling over an Intel or AMD upgrade. The new Ryzen processors/motherboards look good, and will be supported for a while. Intel seems to require another motherboard every time they come up with a new processor. Right now a Ryzen 5 2600 for $160 has more than enough processing power for a 1070 and seems to be the best bang for the buck. Decisions....decisions.....

You're going to leave 10-15% performance behind and a lot of overclocking headroom. Ryzen is better for AMD, but it still has a significant IPC deficit. Of course, they are cheaper and it's your call if the cost differential is worth it. If you're still on the same board now and baring an equipment failure you still would be, I'm not sure of the validity of your platform longevity argument. At this point, getting a Ryzen would be a side grade not an upgrade from what you have now for gaming (for the sake of argument realizing you need to by another system). Of course with the extra cores and threads for some applications you'd see much better performance from the Ryzen..

I had not thought to compare the I5-6600K I have to what is available now. Thanks for bringing that up. You are correct, that there would be no compelling reason to upgrade a gaming computer with the new crop of processors. If the MOBO had not had problems I would not be in the market. The comment about chipsets is that Intel comes out with a new chipset every time they bring out a new crop of processors. Finding replacement parts means paying a premium price to find another compatible board. Almost any of the $2-300 processors are a lateral move unless you have one of the latest video cards which are out of my price range. My practice is to build a new computer when a new crop of games come out. I built this last one for Fallout 4. The computer I am typing on now is still around from the Crysis/Farcry days--3 core Athlon and all. What I am not used to is having a computer die so soon. Heck, I was still playing Medal of Honor on a socket 478 rig years later (still works). The only real difference was that I did the one click overclock on the ASUS board (22%). Honestly, I did not notice any difference. But hey, it's there so why not? In any case, the plan is to choose a motherboard that supports only a single video card, and has an armored PCI-E slot. Limited overclocking, and better memory control. I am going to run at factory clock speeds. The biggest change will be to put a M2 NVME drive in to hold the op system. Right now, Toms Hardware is recommending the I5-8400 which is not any different from what I have. The 1070 is the limiting factor regardless. Every time I shop for computer parts, it is so confusing, but so simple. The hard thing is not buying a lot of features that you never use/need. Cheers, Doug

You are correct that with the recent vintage of CPU's of 4 core+, that in your case, the 1070 is what going to ultimately limit your FPS unless you're running at CPU bound 720p, which isn't likely. I guess your problem is that being in the upper mid-range bracket, you have a bazillion choices. I don't know what case you have so I don't know what form factor you can use. But if you're just building a single PCIe slot system, then you may be thinking mini-ITX.

Thanks for the input. I have a replacement MOBO coming, and will be moving the OS to a 500 G M2. The cost/performance ratio is not good enough to warrant spending more money. With the Bitcoin miners affecting the GPU market, 16yr olds are likely to be playing on onboard video, so it is unlikely that the game engine coders will be making big changes. When the next gen of game engines come out, then it will be time for another rig. My hope is that the GPU manufacturers will take the profits from Bitcoin mining and deliver some great products. Cheers, Doug
