I bought a EVGA GTX 980 card back in 2016 and was having no issues with it. I replaced my motherboard (to an ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero) in 2017 and still had no issues with it (as far as I can remember), until sometime in 2018. While playing certain games (Rocket League, Jurassic World: Evolution, Destiny 2, and Runescape), they would freeze and/or crash, sometimes at the same spot. I have since replaced the 980 with a RTX 2080 in January and have had no issues (I'm still using the 980 for my second monitor as I don't have a DisplayPort cable to connect it to the 2080).

Is the 980 possibly defective or is it a compatibility issue with motherboard/Windows 10? The GPU is still under warranty until the end of June.

I can at least say there are no compatibility issues with Windows 10. My 980 is still working great.
