I gifted my old 980 Ti to a friend, and it has worked well for him for about 2 years, but it has started to have an issue. When the GPU reaches a temperature in the mid 70s (c) the pc will shut off. I am confident that the issue is with the GPU, as he has tried the GPU in multiple systems, and the issue follows the card. We will run valley benchmarks, and at some point during the tests it will shut the PC off. This also occurs when running games that push the GPU to 95%-100% usage.

We verified that the fans on the card are spinning, and using Precision X, we set the fans to run at 100% constantly to see if the GPU would still shutdown the system. The benchmark would get a little further for him, but it would still shut down. I've suggested to him to try and replace the thermal paste on the card (it's out of warranty), but I wanted to ask here and see if anyone can think of anything that i'm missing. Are there any other troubleshooting steps?

You could try cleaning the contacts with some alcohol and a cotton swab....a poor connection can cause issues.

Replace the thermal paste and test it before baking it.  Kind of silly to do it the other way around.  Do the easy and less destructive stuff first, then ramp it up to the extreme.

    Might be the PSU?🤔
What type of PSUs he tested on?

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

    I agree.  Fair point.

The GPU takes time to heat up.  At the same time, the PSU is heating up due to load.  It might be purely unrelated that the GPU is mid 70s when it shuts off.  The PSU could be aged and degraded and shutting off due to overtemperature or overload for its current degraded condition.

OP tried the GPU in multiple different systems with the same result, so can reasonably rule out the PSU.

Or maybe I didn't, and that's why I didn't recommend it earlier, but then I forgot when I made the above reply.

Well, being it gets to a such a specific temp and then reacts, that makes me think it may be a software setting, in Precision maybe, thats set at a certain temp and tells the gpu to throttle down and instead of doing that it crashes it. Maybe its tripping the psu protections too along the way?!? Maybe someone was messing with there windows/nvidia power options?!?

How long do these things last? Just curious because I have a 980 ti from 2015 right now. I'm wondering how much more life I could get out of it if I give it to someone. Never been OC'd.

Many years if you treat them right - my wife's desktop has a 980Ti SC in it which used to be my main card (in SLI) back in 2015. Still going strong, but I'm about to replace it with a 2070 Super. I was thinking of selling or giving away the 980Ti, but I might keep it as an emergency backup card if one of our running GPUs fail. It's been solid as a rock with near daily use for all 5 years.

Since the card barely even works right now, evidently, you should just open it up, dust it, and reapply thermal paste.

What if I said that one's entire life had been decided by fate? That every single one of your actions, from the minute to the monumental, stemmed not from your own choices, but had already been decided upon? That life being a journey of limitless possibilities was but an illusion, and no matter how fiercely man struggled, he stood at the mercy of a long-established path? The wealthy shall know their riches. The needy shall starve on the streets. The wicked shall be wicked, the righteous just. The beautiful, the hideous, the strong, the frail, the fortunate, the miserable... and finally, the victors and the defeated. What if I said that all such things had been carved into stone eons ago, allowing for no divergence? If so, sinners have nothing to answer for, nor do saints have any true virtue to their name. What if I said that not a single action is carried out of one's own volition, but had been decided long ago? That we are merely adrift in the current of time? Tell me, would yo

I am currently having this issue as well. The gpu heat or what I considered the PSU load was messing up. I purchased a brand new PSU from bestbuy, and it works under heavy load from two other gpus, a radeon r9 290, and a gtx 2070.
My 980ti is the one I use regularly, and it's also been sent back 3 other times for :artifacting, bricking itself on a bios update, and setting itself on fire. Now it just shuts down and I can't fathom why
