A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the fan tachometer started to spike intermittently. I gives a normal reading about 99% of the time, but quite frequently for a single data point I'll see a spike from time to time while idle, and more frequently while the GPU is running a higher than idle load. When the spike occurs the value on the fan tachometer seems to be nearly double the value of the adjacent data points. I first noticed this while running a monitoring session using EVGA PrecisionXOC OSD. I've since checked to see if other monitoring programs display the same anomaly. So far Corsair Link and Hardware Monitor both validate the anomaly. So it seems to be more than a software bug in EVGA PrecisionXOC OSD. Can anyone shed some light as to why this is spike might be happening?

I've added another image showing a spike.

Now I see it. Looks like the fan controller is starting to have a problem.

That's what I was thinking too, but the weird thing here is that the fan doesn't go up to 5548 RPM. The fan tops at around 3500 or a bit less.

I had a card that acted like that . did it for yeares and one day it just went to max speed .
I pulled a fan from a old card I hjad in a junk box and scabbed it in [fan blades were shorter and mounts were not the same but a spot of super glue mounted it in place] any way that fan worked properly at any speed [thermal controlled ] and ran and cooled the card fine till I got a new card way down the road .
a lot of this in in the fans motor some how if you had a fan to try in its place [don't even need to mount it just unplug the fasm you got and plug in the fan you test with and see if it works normal or not . if so then its in the fan if not than maybe something in the card ? for me if its just been luck it allways been the fan never the card .
you may find a like fan at ebay if you deem it is the fan not the card .
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2499334.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xevga+980+ti+fan+.TRS0&_nkw=evga+980+ti+fan+&_sacat=42000
like me as long as it runs and cools right I don't care what its out of ...lol... I can get it mounted some how
good luck
one thing you never know if the fan is at a point where it may need to change speeds but cant just decide ?? as long as you don't see cooling issues it may not be a big deal right off hand .shrug shoulders , let it bop till she drops then try another fan from another card to see
good luck
