System specs
Gigabyte GA-z170x-Gaming 7, bios fg7
i7-6700K liquid cooled, 4.6g, 28-58c
32 gigs G.Skill DDR4 Ripjaw, 2135
EVGA SuperNova 1050 G+
2 ea GTX 980 Kingpin Classifieds SLI (not sli but bridged)
1 tb SSD
6 tb 7200
4 case fans
Windows 10 Pro, latest build.

When I first SLI these cards they worked great, Fire Strike/Fire Strike Extreme was excellent, gaming was excellent.
After about a week the voltages changed on the cards, they were both different, so were the clocks, computer driver started crashing/recovering, I couldn't get them to even out.
Then Huge pixels started showing up while gaming and bench marking, along with the Pixels the characters , buildings and everything else started getting these long streams like arms would have 8' attachments stretching off of them, fps dropped to almost nothing including 1fps at times colors were horrible.
I replaced the power supply with another like one, still the same, reloaded windows 10 Pro making sure the bios was UEFI and not legacy.
same problem.
Put two GTX 970 SSC SLI and they worked fine. removed them put the two 980 Kingpins back in and the same problems.

Replaced memory, still no luck.

Removed the SLI and the cards worked fine individually, stressed tested them 8 hours individually/memory/CPU with no problems. Bench marked individually with no problems.

Currently I have them together but not SLI, bridge is connected, both cards voltage and clocks  the same, each card running a different monitor with no problems, Fire Strike/Fire Strike Extreme and games run excellent. Games run excellent with no fps drop or loss even Fallout 4 which has a huge fps problems, other games up to and over 200 fps.

All three power plugs plugged in and working on each card, all equipment working, cards SLI and work beautiful at first for about a week, then one day I started computer and all problems.

tried every mobo bios setting I could think of, with no luck.
Card temps are always cool, no over heating.
Does anyone know what might be wrong or what I might be doing wrong?
Everything is updated, all drivers including moving back and forth between Geforce card drivers trying different ones, current driver is latest.

    Hello,

I am sorry to hear of this issue. A few things to try would be:

    A different SLI bridge

Putting the SLI bridge on a different set of SLI fingers

Setting pci gen speed in bios to GEN3 for both slots

Try them in another system if possible

Let us know if you discover anything by doing these steps.
    Thank you.

You sat card temps are always cool.. how cool? The 980 KPE is very sensitive to temps around 60. It will artifact and give errors at low temps. You can want to get them even lower, near 40's if possible. Mid 50'50's at the highest.

Re: GTX 980 Kingpin Classified HELP NEEDED 2016/02/22 00:26:10 (permalink)
Ok, so I tried the suggestions, heres what happened.
Tried three different bridges, tried them on one finger, the other finger then both fingers together, changed settings on both cards from: Normal to OC to LN2, tried Kboost/Over boost/Over voltage in different combinations, overclocked then under clocked then reset - GPU clock offset and Mem clock offset,  with both cards and individually, over clocked and returned CPU.
Voltages on cards-1075 mv, when stress testing them they work fine in SLI until the voltage goes up to 1200 mv then they get angry and dont work.
Individually both cards stress test and pass, SLI they fail and dont render using OCscanner X.
Verified system by putting two GTX 970 SSC's in SLI, they work great, went back to Kingpins, in SLI they fail, but individually they work excellent, temps for both when stressing- 44 to 55c, CPU 48c.
When cards are set to Normal on the switches, windows stops them saying they reported an error, when switches on both cards are in-OC or LN2 they operate fine.
I did notice that both cards have a different bios, I dont know if that matters
    Card 1 - 84 04 31 01 81
    Card 2 - 84 04 31 01 80

Right now both cards are installed, bridge is in place each has its own monitor connected, but they are not in SLI, they bench fine, they run fine, they game fine.
No viruses, no malware, clean install on SSD.
All hardware checks out, even both cards individually, just not in SLI.
I really cant figure this out because two GTX 970 SSC SLI run just fine in this machine.
They are working fine on their own, guess I'll just buy more monitors to fully use both installed cards.

    I have tried:
    OCScanner X
    3D Mark
    ROG RealBench
    Prime 95
    NvidiaInspector
    Unigen

Full Specs everything connected and running:

Sounds like you got some defective cards. Do they work in sli when both cards are in OC/LN2 mode? Or do the fail in all three Normal/OC/LN2?

What are your PSU voltages like, idle and under load? Will the cards work fine in SLI if you're on the OC BIOS?

There's an issue with OCScanner running in SLI on Win10 with the recent drivers, and it's producing corrupted rendering. It's known, and being fixed. Do you have any issues when running 3DMark or Valley on the OC BIOS in SLI?

Are you aware of fact that all ASUS custom 980Ti models are faster or same speed as EVGA most premium card 980Ti K|NGP|N. Off course except reference card. K|NGP|N is faster than ASUS reference and nothing else.
Matrix 980Ti 710$ Amazon, Strix 980Ti 705$, and only Matrix Gold cost as K|NGP|N but card can't be bought, people could order in their country over ASUS distributors because they don't want sell unstable cards as EVGA and it's very small number of binned cards.
What EVGA do? EVGA sell ASIC for 1000$ and same clock as Strix. EVGA decide to give priority to ASIC over graphic card speed...cccc...
But now if someone start to check Matrix Gold, I doubt that he will find below 80%.
But OK clock of Matrix Gold is so high that we don't need to talk about binning at all...That's not question?
My first reaction was That can't work on so high clock.

Monitor and record the Voltage while gaming --- maybe the PSU is not up to it? (970 SSC SLI works)

Is the RAM using XMP or is it set manually above stock speed ?

RAM voltage - auto or manually set ?

RAM is on Gigabyte or G.Skill --- tested and approved list for your MB & RAM combination ?

You used DDU to uninstall ALL Nvidia drivers ?  (What version of driver are you using ?)

Then do advanced clean install of Nvidia Graphics and PhysX driver -- ONLY--
----   No sound, Geforce Experience or 3D ----

Can you mix your cards -- one Kingpin & one 970 ?  Trying to identify if only one of the KP is faulty?

More than likely, you're doing something terribly wrong, and that's probably why SLI is not working for you. I have zero problems with SLI, with stable clocks, stable drivers, despite Geforce Experience, which I got rid of.

I believe that was a response to Sajin's post #6 question --- not condemning SLI in general

Yes, ram is approved manually set to specs, psu is stable, used ddu multiple times for multiple drivers, tested each card individually-passed, tried 3 different sli bridges, various voltage settings, under clocking, a fruend is bringing his two cards over tonight to test, same cards as mine.

Thanks. I only read the last post (I think I posted just after you, literally), which was a knock on SLI, and then reading the subject line, kind of put my own "2 and 2" together. Clearly, was a bad idea.

My son is brilliant, he suggested I go back to Windows 7 Pro.
I reloaded Windows 7 Pro, all software and now everything works!!!!
I had to install NvidiaInspector to limit fps, some games dont like to go that fast.

Thanks to everyone that gave me suggestions, but in the end I just had to down grade the OS to fix everything.
Never could get Windows 10 Pro to work right.
I'll just stay here for now...

So just for the hell of it I reloaded windows 10 Pro, sli still didnt work, bench marking worked fine, all games on the other hand had huge multi collored pixels 1/2" spuare in size, looked like a disco ball, everything had long spikes, then driver crashed, tried every nvidia driver I could find online, non helped, reloaded windows 7 Pro and sli works again, bench marks and games, I have two $750.00 cards that I cant use with windows 10 Pro, so I guess Ill stick with windows 7 Pro, cause I just cant figure it out. With windows 10 my top card lights will turn off and on from time to time then the problems start, with windows 7 that does not happen, the system is stable, my psu is fine also. Just weird.

When the lights turn off and on it means the driver is restarting. Did you try 347.88 driver? If not, you should give it a shot. 347.88 is a windows 7 driver that will work on windows 10. 347.88 is also a really stable driver.

The lights flashing sound like the firmware issue that T|n addressed over on the KPcooling forums.

I know that having the air cooler on the card caused my cards to artifact really bad, and once they were watercooled, the issue never resurfaced. You need to keep the temperatures really low, below 60c when possible, for the KPE cards to work without many issues.

That was why I didn't go for the KPE card when I sold my 980's.
