Hello,

My GTX 970 has been making an irritating chirping noise at idle since day one. It doesn't happen all the time. Initially, I thought it was coil whine. I just discovered that it happens when the fan is attempting to move at idle. Please see video of fan attempting to move. Is this normal?

Didn't hear any chirping. It's normal for the fans to move like that.

Re: GTX 970 Fan Attempting to Turn at Idle and Making Chirping Noise 2018/04/14 17:09:04 (permalink)
maybe something in the fans PCB that controls that  [fans speeds ]    I replace a few GPU fans  for what ever reason  and its been in the fan    and to add they been power logic  fans at that..   seems like power logic is what EVGA uses  ..

you couls try a gpu fan  to test with   or  like you say when the -0- fan deal is activating  or trying to  just  set up a custom fan profile  with some fan software  [look up how to's ]    and set the fan to run full time or at idle at say like 20%  speed

a lot of guys never liked the -0- fan option of these later cards and just did that

now if it chirps  when running  maybe a dry bearing ?  look up how to lube case fans  and give that a try

maybe the chirp is so minor like sajin said he did not hear it   and your cards not over heating and the fans do spin up as temps rises   just grin and bare it .

evga don't offer replacement fans  and the evga fans on e-bat are not so cheap as fans  go [wonder why ? ]    last card I just pulled a fan from a hd 6850  [ non power logic]  and scabbed it in where a junk power logic was  .   had to use super glue in place of screws  and the 6850 fan was a tad smaller size but the card work fine and dandy and runs and cools as normal and expected  to this day ,  and you'd never know it was swapped out unless you took it apart to see

or see if its a issue to you if evga will RMA ?

I don't know why my phone mic won't pick up the chirp but it's definitely present when the fan attempts to turn. Is there a bios to get rid of the zero fan mode as my 970 doesn't have a switch?

don't know ?  the twitching seems normal  in that -0- fan mode  . lots of posts on that in forums around  asking this [any brand ]  .  some say theres twitches   some say theres don't , but the cards cool normal  and fans do speed up when the temp threshold  is reached . [60c +/-  ]  .

    https://forums.evga.com/GTX-980-ACX-Fans-Twitching-m2325162.aspx

now the chirp ?    hard to say with out hands on right there .    maybe something in the fan motor ele. or mech.  that causes the twitching in some cards and not others and yours adds the chirp ?

these fans are  serviceable    I looked at my powerlogic fand from cards  and there is lube hole in  to oil the brg.  easy   / no plug but some kinda tape covering the hole ?  maybe to prevent you from getting oil on the fans PCB  that is what controls the fans action from the cards sensors .   most folk tend to blame the card at fault  99% of the time its in the fan electronics  and most times just needs a good known working fan in replacement  not replace the card

heres a powerlogic fan  with a look under the sticker .   bearing under the black tape cover thing  and some of the exposed PCB of the fan

no bios switch then like I say do / try a custom fan curve profile .   [example]

I'll upload a modified vbios that has 0db mode disabled for ya if you tell me what the part # of your card is.

Thanks that's great news but I have a few questions:

    1) Will this invalidate the warranty?
    2) Will I be able to revert to the original bios if I'm not happy?
    3) Will you be able to mod it so that it runs at 10% (450rpm) instead of 0rpm until 60 degrees celcius? Any higher is just too noisy at idle.

    My card is 04G-P4-2974-KR.

    1. Yes, but you can always flash back to the original vbios before sending the card in for service to keep the warranty intact.
    2. Yes.
    3. Yep.

Thanks Sajin for the bios. I noticed you set the profile so that the rpm starts to climb at 30 degrees C. I think this will be noisy since the card idles at around 40 degrees C.

    Hello,

My GTX 970 has been making an irritating chirping noise at idle since day one. It doesn't happen all the time. Initially, I thought it was coil whine. I just discovered that it happens when the fan is attempting to move at idle. Please see video of fan attempting to move. Is this normal?

    Hey Fadsarmy,

Sorry that your fans are twitching constantly like that, that fan behavior is definitely not normal. A vbios would not necessarily fix that issue.

Upon checking your account it looks like both GTX 970's that you have registered are within warranty, open up a support ticket on the card with the fan issues. A RMA for that particular issue is definitely recommended. Our EU support team will take care of you.

thing is I could almost guarantee  its them power logic fans used    .   but your down to  run them full time  [ scrap the -0- fan ]  then hope they hold out ,  replace the fans   or the RMA .

sad thing like I said above 40 bucks  is about the average  , but it is for the 2 needed  [claims new unused ? ]

I was thinking the same thing. Some say it's normal and some say it's abnormal. Anyway, I'm going to rma mine becuase of the accompanied chirping noise.

I managed the mic to pick up the chirping noise as the fan twitches if you set your speakers to high.

I heard it that time. Looks like it only happens when the fans twitch. The chirping may be normal.

It's not normal. I have another identical card that doesn't do it even though it twitches. Weird thing is that it only twitches/chirps after a cold boot. If I restart the pc it stops.

like said probly  just another powerlogic buggy fan  . not hard to understand  here anymore with them .  pretty much told your options  -  live with it - adjust the profile  so it runs full time at a low rpm at idle  -  service the brg [??]  make sure the blades aint hitting something like the shroud or the wires ?- replace the fans  - Rma the card .

heck may run the fans full time at say  1800-2000 rpm for a hr or so and that may loosen it up  or cause something to ware in then mite work properly after that ?

''Weird thing is that it only twitches/chirps after a cold boot. If I restart the pc it stops''    see  for me I would lube the brgs  to be sure there not sticking cold  due to lack or dry lube , but that mat void the rma if you then decide to do that  if they were to look

in the end all you can do is what TOU feel is best .;/

    good luck

I did an Advanced RMA and received a replacement GTX 970 today. The replacement card has terrible coil whine so I have not yet sent the old one back. This card is ten times worse than my original card, at least it didn't have any coil whine. Even the fan twitching/chirping is louder and has a loud hiss which the old one didn't have. Given a choice, I would keep my older card. I have a video here of the unbearable coil whine. I want to send the replacement back before I send my original one back.

pretty cheap here if you wanted to try as I said above ? 19 bucks

''Perfect replacement fans for EVGA 980 Ti SC ACX 2.0''   so should be for the 970 as well , but your call

    https://www.amazon.com/PLA09215B12H-GeForce-GTX760-TiTANX-Graphics/dp/B01MCV6K28

or shop around   ,  here so far them powerlogic fans been short lived   and replacing them the cards are still going and cooling fine as normal ..

even if you don't try you just don't know   and may work out and resolve

I'm betting its in there fans PCB goes bad and causes these thing to occur  . so far its never been in the card itself  or the card to be at blame

you can see the fans PCB in this I took   the replacement fan for it worked great in the card it was pulled out of . you know there using all high quality JAP components [ lol... ]

    good luck

sorry I did not see /think about  I all ready posted all that above

I thought you said  your first ''good'' card just had that fan issue  not coil whine ..   that just gtx 970 for ya,  the #1 complaint of that line  from any brand . I mean coil whine and 970's went hand in hand  , that's been well known

At the moment, I'm more concerned which card to send back. I'm supposed to send the older one back so that I can get a refund on the collateral I paid for the advanced rma. But I would rather send the replacement back and keep the old one and be done with it.

if so as sajin  said  and alls good on that  that try the fan replacement on your first card you decided to keep  ..

or evga may send you another replacement for the first replacement   to test out  and it will be satisfactory  .    then if your still holding on to your  original card  order the fans and test in the mean time  to see if that even resolves  [I'm still assuming the original card of yours is just a fan issue and not coil whine as well ?? ] .

like here I guess and a few more  I don't get why so many are re- rmaing   2 or 3 times   getting back as bad a card as they first sent in ?   is evga on a pass the buck rma service now a days  withn the hopes it works out on your end ?.    they claim refurbished or recertified  but it seems its just rebox and ship it out  with the hope you just give up and go buy there newest latest card  at full retail

    Sajin
You can send the replacement back.

Thanks Sajin, that's what I want.

You're spot on. If they say they test all cards before shipping out then something is seriously wrong at EVGA.
