I have a GTX 970 + EVGA 750W power supply running my i5 6600k system. I keep random getting a black screen with no warning and the computer will immediately turn off and reboot. I have no idea why it's doing this. Does anyone know how/where I would start to trouble shoot this?

Edit: here's my part list: ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/PZj9QV

Thanks, Jsu / Justin

Jsudesign, I can't recommend a solution to your problem but I can sympathize. My PC was stable until I installed the Windows anniversary update. After that I started getting black screen failures too but unlike your issue my computer just stayed at a black screen but was still running and I had to force a hard stop and reboot. I updated all the drivers and uninstalled the video driver and let Windows install one. Eventually I installed the latest driver from Nvidia.

Just because your computer black screens does not mean it is a video card problem. I experienced this problem for many days after the anniversary update but for some reason still unknown the issue eventually resolved itself. I hope the same holds true for you. You may want to look at the event logs for any errors. Make sure to look at applications in the logs.

You did not provide any detailed information about your system and it would be helpful if you did. Have you installed any new software or have there been any background Windows updates that happened just before this happened? Are all your drivers up to date and if so, did this start after a driver was installed?

I guess remove the card and use the onboard  / cpu graphics  and see if it still shuts down  under use  ?    so many thigs could cause that  .    any bad hardware ?  bad motherboard ?  psu ?

maybe if you got a buddy  that's got a vid card as near equal to the card your using to test it to see  if it also may have issue  or try your card in his to see if it does the same ?

may need to see if your motherboard  has any latest bios updates  on GPU  compatibility or improve stability

thing is you got to start some kind of process of elimination - test card  - test other hardware   /  try another PSU  / bent cpu pins /  motherboard shorting on case or bad standoff  defective motherboard voltage regulation ...ect ...

thing is you got to have a way to prove its a certain hardware    like card in = issue  card out = no issue     back up / test GPU  in  = no issue   that could kinda prove its the card used  and may want to test it in another computer to back that up   , same issue pops up no matter  = look at something else  in line .

you may try to burn a live dvd of Linux   and boot to it and see if ti does that  under it ?  that could help eliminate  any windows or software issue as well ?

You can download the Linux Mint operating system for free. It comes as an ISO file
which you need to burn to a blank DVD. The liveDVD is then bootable and provides a
fully-functional operating system which you can try without affecting your PC. In
layman's terms, when you put Linux Mint on a DVD and place it into your computer, you
can try it out while leaving your current system intact.

I like to keep one handy just for these needs  to trouble shoot   if I feel its a windows /software  issue

I should add. BEFORE you make any changes do a full backup that can do both a cold restore and a file restore.

Hi Aaronkro, I did do the creative update and then this started happening more frequently, so I rolled back the update, then updated all my drivers to the latest nvidia drivers. I've also installed the precision xoc tool to monitor heat / fan speeds etc, and it all seems in range. It  just seems like when the graphics card gets into a heavier load it will sometimes be okay, sometimes shut off the whole system.

Do you or Dr. Death know of a program that can give me a log to say what the fault of the shutdown is? Next time I can check the logs.

    Hi Justin,
most all cases I've personally seen with failing graphics cards result in artifacting - screens freezing - Display Driver Crashes, or no display on boot. Usually your hard black screen crashes come from unstable overclocking & overheating. I would make sure your heatsink on your processor is making good contact(re-mount for the hec of it) for a start, use some monitoring software such as CoreTemp to monitor CPU temps while under any load. Also if your cpu is overclocked, try putting back to factory settings.  Also make sure your motherboard is using the latest Bios.

Your problem usually means your psu/video card is faulty. Here is what I recommend doing...

#1 Try powering the card with a different set of pci-e power cables.
#2 Try using another card in your system that draws the same amount of power as a 970.
#3 Try a different psu in your system.
#4 Try testing your card in another pc.

Just wanted to give an update: I switched GPU slots on my mother board, it didn't crash for a while; now it's crashing again. It seems to be crashing under high GPU loads, applications / games that aren't as GPU heavy run fine. Is this an issue with the GTX 970? what do I do? I did see some others having same issue with the 970 SC on reddit.

Did you try any of the things I suggested in post #7?

I had a couple systems crashing randomly, I swapped out the 18ga power cord for 16ga on 650w and lower and 14ga for 750-1050w PSUs
No more random restarts under heavy GPU loads folding or crunching BOINC

Also in the box at the bottom you can type in event viewer and doubleclick the event viewer app
See if you get code 43 I believe it is.

I had one of those 6 outlet power cords go bad and cause restarts. Try another power cord directly in the outlet.

Yes it's always code 43. I'll try another power cord direct into the outlet. I did some research and found a lot of people have done a BIOS flash to fix the issue: forums.evga.com/Solution-For-quotBlack-Screenquot-Problem-For-GTX-970-SC-ACX20-2974-m2332911.aspx

Also if you google "evga gtx 970 solutions for black screen" many solutions point to a BIOS flash to reduce the power draw. I haven't seen one specific for my card though: the SC edition. Any thoughts on this?

I ended up downloading the bios info for my card from a database. It's interesting it shows different from my current BIOS settings. Screens:
    Current settings:

    Downloaded Settings:

So I decided to go ahead and flash it, enabling IGPU as my main gpu before hand and backing it up. The flash went through, but now the drivers aren't installing properly. So I might have to just revert back to the orig BIOS, and perhaps try underclocking?

You tried everything Sajin suggested in post 7 and tried the cord directly into the outlet before you flashed?
If you did all that and still no go, I would flash it back, try it in another computer.
If you can not use another computer or use another video card in yours.
It maybe time to call EVGA tech support and RMA if it is still under warranty.

Yes, I tried the other outlet, I don't have access to another computer to test part swapping. Even after fixing the drivers and getting the flashed bios, I just experienced another crash after doing all mentioned above. So frustrating.

I wonder if it's possible the outlet I'm using is limiting the power to the power supply, so under high load it's crashing.

Are you using 2 PCIE cable to the card and not just one cable with two plugs on it?
If using one cable with two plugs, try using two cables, or if you can two different PCIE cables.

Is there a place on your MB to plug in a molex connector to supply more power to the video card? Is it plugged in?

Can you try another PCIE slot on the motherboard?

You can underclock the card if it is factory OC and see, if that fixes it, then it should be RMA for not running as advertised.

If non of that works call EVGA tech support and tell them all you have done.
I am thinking it is either a bad GPU or PSU if all the other stuff tried does not work. See what they want to RMA first.

I doubt it, extension cords and power strips can go bad, but I bet the outlet is ok.
Unless the polarity of the plugs is reversed, test it with a power meter if you have one.

Try the card in a different machine. always a sure sign of bad card if the symptoms carry to a known healthy PC.

+1. This is the best troubleshooting method to try if possible.

Take the video card to a local computer repair shop to have it tested.

And if after all that the GPU behaves well in another system, i'd try launching a benchmark on your system, if it reboots instantly there's a strong likelihood that your culprit is your PSU that's struggling to provide the necessary amperage on its 12V rail. Happened to me twice already.

Okay guys, I now know it's not a GPU problem. I disabled the GPU and tried to play a few games with the iGPU. Crashed! So I looked into it. the EVGA NEX750G1 apparently has some issues with gigabyte motherboards (what I have). I bought the PSU from NCIX about a year ago, what do you think my options are it says 10 year warranty.

What issues would that be? Sounds like it's time to buy a new psu if your current psu isn't compatible with your motherboard.

I should have documented the site I read, apparently Z boards, with K chips and this specific NEX PSU's from EVGA have issues.

I doubt they are going to cover any costs since the unit is a year old.

I would contact EVGA cust support on the phone when they are back at work tomorrow.
Maybe that have an answer or maybe they will swap out the PSU for a different model if there is a known issue.
You are on a public forum talking to people who do not work for EVGA. Go right to the source and find out.
