Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum so sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong section. I am having this ongoing issue with my display driver which keeps crashing when watching youtube or playin games.. it just crashed while typing this.. (kernel version 296.10). I am running a GTX 460m on the Asus VX7 if that helps at all. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. This seems to have made the issue worse with more frequent crashes.. I have also tried altering the 'Power Management Mode' to 'Prefer maximum performace' under Nvidia settings as some users  have claimed to work. I'm not really sure what to do at this point. If anyone has any fixes for this it would help a lot. Thanks in advance.

I actually had an Asus G73SW that started doing that recently.

I tried various drivers, and it seemed the WHQL 285s worked the best, but...what finally "fixed" it for me was two things:
    • Adjusting the power configuration for it.  In the nVidia options, set the 'Prefer Maximum Performance' (which you noted you tried, but that didn't seem to fully help me, either).  And then set Windows to 'High Performance', as well:
    • Clean the sucker out.  And I mean, THOROUGHLY.  Not just the compressed air can with nozzle thing, but I also found an attachment for the vacuum cleaner for 'corners' that was hard plastic and very narrow.  Powered the laptop town, and took out the CD drive, popped off any doors easy to remove, removed the battery, etc.  Then went through with that attachment and sucked the crap out of any opening.  Then blasted the openings with the compressed air.  Then vacuumed them, again.
Of those two things, once my laptop was starting to TDR any moving I watched...maybe every 15 minutes, the first thing cut it down to once an hour (or so), and a reboot would usually clear it up for a few more hours before it started TDR'ing every hour...

...the second thing (cleaning its interior ridiculously thoroughly) stopped the problem entirely.

    Hey buddy,

I should have mentioned my Windows settings have already been on High Performance but this still persists. I have tried vaccuming it out in the past without any success. This is seriously frustrating, hopefully someone else has tried something else that has worked..

Ok so after a couple of hours of going through google I found a couple of programs to try and alter the voltage to the gpu. I tried MSI Afterburner  but found that I could not alter the voltages or the fan speed as they are blanked out. Even after I tick "Unlock Voltage Control" in the settings it was still not possible.  I should also mention that I have tried going through the Nvidia settings and the voltages for GPU and GPU Memory are blank and I can't adjust them..

After finding that I can't alter the voltage to the GPU I decided to underclock my system and it seems to be working so far (no crashes after 4 hours). Not sure if this is a permanent fix but seems to be working for now..
