Hi, I am looking to buy an EVGA GTX 460 2Win. I have been reading about all these horror stories about how you have a install a patch to get the card working properly. Has nVidia released drivers for that issue yet? I truly love the 2Win, but I will not buy it if I have to jump through burning hoops just to get it to run. I have an AMD, AM3 motherboard with two PCIe 2.0 slots. One is running in 16x and the second one is running in 4x. According to reviews, I would have problems with the 2Win. If anyone has heard some chatter, please let me know, because I will be buying a video card in the next month or so. Thanks!

Does your motherboard support SLI?

Well, I don't know. I have the MSI 870S-G46. It has two PCIe 2.0 slots. First one running at X16, the second one running at X4. Technically, I shouldn't have to have a SLI compatible motherboard to run the 2WIN, or??

Shouldn't really need a motherboard that supports SLI as the card has everything it needs for SLI built in. I ran a 9800GX2 on an old AMD chipset in sli without issue. Other than that, I can't be of much help.

The question is, what do you want to run with that card? You have never even mentioned your powersupply. Id it going to be enough for a dual GPU card? If its not its going to cost alot to buy a replacement... and you could have bought a better card with that money. What CPU do you have and at what speed is it running? That will effect your videocard greatly. If you want to play BF3 and have a 1920x1080 or larger monitor... that card would be a HUGE mistake to buy.

95% of these cards will not run in SLI on a non-SLI certified board. I had this and got rid of it. AMD boards with the AMD chipsets dont have SLI unless you get a 990 chipset. You need like a 750i chipset to use the SLI. You have to update your mobo BIOS if your device manager doesnt show 2 460's in it. But it still wont give you the option to enable SLI in the Nvidia settings. There is a way to make it work, but you cant use the more current video drivers. You have to google SLI Hack, and download a patch. All Mobos are SLI capable, they just arent SLI certified, meaning the company that made the board didnt pay nvidia to use SLI, so they had to disable it on the board which causes your windows registry to show that its not SLI-able. The patch fakes it out and rewrites the registry and mobo bios to activate it. Then it works fine. There is alot of talk about the card not needing an SLI becuase its a dual GPU card blah blah, well it really doesnt work without an SLI board. Trust me, i went through this for months with EVGA. I had to RMA the card 4 times, then when i got the 5th i got rid of the thing. They have more problems hen they are worth.

The power supply was never the issue. It was the whole SLI driver thingy.

Humm.... could it be more confusing? What market is this card made for? I wonder. I was at one point considering the 4602Win card. Considering: 1. This card does NOT support SLI 2. Dual GPU in single slot This product sounds PERFECT for systems with a SINGLE PCIe16 slot. While its not expandable (no SLI support), it gives you TWO GPU's (important for S3D gaming/applications) and more performance then a single GTX570. So now your telling us that it is INTENDED for systems with multiple PCIe16 slots? (therefore SLI compatible) IMHO: I think the product/marketing/sales literature might need a bit of updating to reflect this odd behavior.

Right. I understood this video card to be a dual GPU card. However, I did some research on the card, and people were saying some non-sli motherboards would potentially have to have some weird patches installed, for the motherboard to recognize the dual gpu.

I have the 460 2win and I am pretty positive you have to have a SLI compliant motherboard for this card to work properly, especially since it recognizes the card as 2 individual GPU's. Another word of warning is this card needs a very stable high wattage PSU. EVGA recommends at least 700 watts, but honesty you most likely need close to 900 watts. Due to airflow this card also requires a ton of airflow to work at decent temps and the fans get super loud past 50% fan speed.

It's interesting that there are two sides to this story. When the card first came out, it was my understanding you could run this card, with only one slot. Now thought, that I have been reading up on it, there are people on both sides that say either that you don't need a sli-ready board, or that it's a requirement.

The 460 2Win has SLI "onboard" so to speak, you don't need a SLI motherboard! Check for the 9800Gx2, 295, 590 and if you want to extend the problem generally check ATI/AMD offerings. You just need an PCIe slot and that's it. IMO i would just buy a single GPU card, but that's just me.

Looks like your board supports crossfire - why not just get 2 6870s for less, and get better frame rates? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131378 20 dollars off with promo code, and a MIR - $280 for both... They will work with your motherboard, and the 4X lane speed is NOT going to drop your frame rates that much. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSfifE2Domo Case and point for 4X / 8X / 16X speed comparisons - mind you this is for DUAL GPU cards, so 16X is really 8X per GPU, 8X is 4X per GPU, and 4X is 2X per GPU. Just saying, it would be a less of a headache and pot shot for a (technically) SLI'd card.
