Is there any documentation anywhere that explains exactly what the differences are between the master and slave bios?

Master = lower power target, less aggressive fan curve (fans don't run 24/7).
Slave = higher power target, more aggressive fan curve (fans run 24/7).

What do you mean exactly by power target? Is that simply the ability to OC higher?

Think of the power target as the power ceiling for the card. Once the card hits its ceiling it will begin to dynamically adjust its core clock speed to a lower value to keep it under the power ceiling. By increasing the power ceiling to its max you'll prevent the card from dynamically adjusting early and will be able to run higher core clocks if needed.

    Stock power target is 280W.
Master BIOS max. power target is 328W.
Slave BIOS max. power target is 355W.

On slave BIOS only the GPU fan runs 24/7.

Thanks guys. I have a FTW3 card coming today. If I don't plan to manually overclock for awhile is there any reason to use Slave? Will slave allow the card auto-boost/overclock)? My previous card does (EVGA GTX 690) automatically when needed.

    Thanks

No. Maybe yes just because of the fan curves.
With Pascal, you will end up with 1900+ MHz on stock settings anyway without doing anything.

Slave will allow a higher auto boost / overclock

Not sure if I am hijacking this or not, but I have my new FTW3 on slave bios and my fans only turn on when they need to.  Wonder if this toggle switch is not working.

Was the PC turned OFF or have you cycled the power since moving the switch ?

If yes, turn PC off, unplug PSU, hold start button 30 sec. (to discharge capacitors), plug it back in, reboot PC.

You can verify the switch is working by verifying your Power Target can be set to 127%. If it can, you're in the slave BIOS. On my cards when slaved, only the GPU fan spins full time at idle.

I switched to the slave BIOS and love it. Fan curve is how I like it and power can go as high as 127%. Mine is set at 120% on occasion when running Precision. Fans are faster of course than master, but to my ears pretty much silent.
Amazingly over many hours of gaming and benching non of the 9 + 1 temp sensors have gone above 72c. I run HW info in the background always to check temps/record stats.

If I don't use precision (actually the 120% power is over kill on most games at 1440p so I usually use no software at all, just the HW monitor prog.) Lovely temps and well balanced. Personally I am happy just using the slave with no other adjustments, IMO it's that good! So convenient to just switch on the PC, no adjustments needed and get straight into a game on the Slave BIOS. Recommended!!

Well, I know my slave bios is working as you mentioned because I can turn up the power target.  The fans only startup when they need to.  Nothing runs at idle.  I'm not complaining, just found it odd.

That is a bit odd. The slave BIOS is programmed to keep the GPU fan running at a very low 15% or around 600rpm at all times. Only one fan, and impossible to hear (for me.).
Possibly software reading is off a bit? The way to be absolutely sure is run your pc at desktop idle, (no intergrated graphics I assume) open the case and do a visual check of the right (GPU area) fan. It should be silently gently running.
If you have already done a visual check, I have no idea why it's not moving? I guess as long as the fans still cool properly under load it's no problem at all. Just curious about it.

Are you using PrecisionXOC? If you are, make sure you are running the latest version (6.1.13 or newer). Some older versions do not work properly with the FTW3.
Starting PrecisionXOC usually updates the bios on the FTW3, so its worth a try. I think you only need to do it once to update the bios, if you don't want to use PXOC permanently.

Yes, the later versions of XOC do indeed update the card, it's very obvious that it updates something (the BIOS)  so redleader00's idea is well worth trying!
Edit: And, yes only happens once after fresh install or first run of XOC.

Precision doesn't update the vbios on the card. It only updates the MCU's firmware.

Thanks for that info, Saijin. Good to know that. I thought it odd that I didn't need to reboot, so should have known it couldn't be the vBios. Anyway, it's good to know the MCU firmware gets updated. Cheers!
