GTX 1060ssc, boosting queries.

TIA all. I'm pretty new to this. Recently got my 1060 ssc but have been holding concerns.
 
It really seems to like to boost when I wouldn't assume it's needed. I can't see how or why it wants to run so hot when it's at less than %75 usage. Even less than %50 sometimes. 
 
I haven't been too confident to play with the settings correctly, I imagine. The boostx software seems good. I'm just not wanting to hurt anything playing around. Either that or I think I may be running into platform wrinkles. Any ideas? I'd really like to get this things running as quietly as possible. Hard to do that if it's consistently boosting max. Maybe my idea of usage required is off. Maybe it's something else.
 
I'm running vsync where possible @ 1080x1920

    We would need to know your temperatures to give any sort of advice. Your case and fan set up is important. In an average case the GPU's are designed to run around 80C or so. This is perfectly normal. There are several programs out there. EVGA's Precision and MSI Afterburner being two popular ones which allow you to set up fan and or clock speed profiles that can be applied at boot.
    As a rule of thumb if you're having excessive fan noise due to trying the keep the GPU around 80C or so using Vsync,  there's likely an issue with inadequate airflow through the case.

    Tanks for the reply. The flow could be better. It sounds like my expectations could be as well. I forgot to mention my 500 gig 960 pro as well.
     
    Case is a fractal define mini, Three intake fans (one stock fan bottom for pressure) one exhaust, case fans are corsair airflow's. Stock cooler on the R7 running stock config. (no overclocking yet) I have aggressive fan curves to keep temps as low as possible. for reliability's sake. The air in the case seems to cycle quickly to me. second or two quick. (non technical e-cig smoke test). Maybe I have too much positive pressure?
     
    It sounds like I could dial the curves back or just know my limitations better. Most games only let the GPU reach 60c with full fan speed and my curve My curve goes full in the 50's Still if it weren't boosting in low demand, (as I see low demand) That should be better. Maybe I should get more comfortable with a warmer core? If I weren't so worried about damage, I'd try and dial back the core clock or something. (at 0 now) I have both precisionx and afterburner. All though, I'm reticent until I know more. I did already accidentally overclock my cpu for a time.

    desperation bump. Just hoping for some tips before I poke evga support, maybe the forum can nip me in the bud.

    Wish I knew why my gpu wants to run 2000 mghz when it doesn't need to.

    You could try a voltage curve in afterburner and lower the voltage at something like .975 but as far as the speed you can run at .975 volts and be stable you would have to play around with it to find out as each card is different. And it would keep your temps lower but there's no reason to stress out on such low temps

    Yeah, not stressed at my temps. Just trying to get the card to run quietly when i feel it should be able to. I don't see a need for the card to get as hot as it does and run as fast as it does when being used so little.
     
    I guess I'm just going at it from the opposite side compared to usual. I am kind-of odd like that.

    You could just let the card run hotter as the only down side is boost clocks drop but if they are not needed in the first place it shouldn't matter. But Trying to change how Pascal boosts is easier said then done other then what Nvidia gives us . you are probably on optimal power for power management mode by default. If you want you could try setting in Nvidia control panel the power management mode to adaptive and see if it does anything

    Thank you, I may try that. What you have to say, certainly helps me understand the dynamics of what's going on with all these transistors, etc. At least a bit better. There has to something missed (I can't stop this feeling)
     
    I feel like letting it run hotter would accomplish less than lowering the the temp limit in precision boost. It seems to me, backing off on the fan curve will only let it run hotter. I don't want to run into unsafe territory, it will if I let it.  Still, maybe it is a paschal thing. I'm far too new at this. I wish I could just blame it on the game I'm playing. It may be just that, A poorly optimized game. I did just get some good tuning ideas, though. Probably a nice combination of things.
     
    Now, to finish and send an e-mail off to my Senator who is in charge of this tax bill. ;)
