Apparently, the new version of GPU-Z (2.12 and up) can detect "fake" cards, but I was surprised to see the EVGA card I bought long ago from Frys got flagged.

Looks like my 8400GS (which should have a GT218 GPU) is actually a GT 220 (GT216 GPU) under the hood, but the BIOS slows it down to 8400GS-like performance.  I suppose it makes sense if EVGA had extra GT216 chips sitting around.

The GPU-Z screenshot is likely a reporting error. There was a refresh of the 8400 GS that GPU-Z may not be accounting for correctly. I will be sending you an e-mail so you can follow up with me if you have any questions.

If there was such a refresh, even Wikipedia doesn't know about it.
