IPS seems a bit of a lottery still with IPS glow...

I went with an Asus PG278QR

Don't let the onboard speakers be too much of a factor, they sound poopy because the monitor bezel is so thin. Go with the better price. And yes, IPS is definitely worth it. I have the Viewsonic XG2703-GS which again, uses the exact same panel but the Acer still has the best price as of now.

There is a bit of a lottery yes, but I can't stand the color shift of TN...but everyone has their preferences.

I never went G-sync.  I scoff at Nvidia's attempt to sell more hardware.  I was afraid at first but I never noticed any screen tearing.  It's probably there once in awhile but I've never noticed it.  Totally worth saving the dough.

GSync is worth it to many others. Have you ever tried GSync before? It works great on games where your FPS is far lower than your max refresh rate - where tearing is most noticeable. And if that is your opinion on nVidia then perhaps AMD + Freesync is the best choice for you.

the only risk with IPS is the glow lottery, i chose a PG278QR over the 279 for this reason

That's fair enough. Some people aren't too bothered by it like myself. It is a tradeoff that one has to decide, glow vs color/gamma shift

We have a local micro center (63 miles away, yes that's a local drive lol) in downtown Cambridge,MA in the heart of MIT, Lesley University, BU and Harvard, Go figure right. They have 2 identical set ups with a Freesync and Gsync Monitors, who ever says they notice screen tearing is very minimal, it's really not minimal AT ALL. Gsync is worth every penny i have noticed a significant difference. I'm happy I started this forum and got opinions, otherwise I would of been kicking myself for not listening, taking opinions made my my decision a lot easier.

Yes, I agree. Gsync is well worth it if you can afford it.

At lower refresh rates, for me, it is worth it. However, I have a 240Hz monitor now and it is NOT worth it at all. There is less lag without it and the frame rates rarely go over 240 FPS and when they do I do not notice any tearing. On a 100Hz monitor? I have to use GSYNC because the tearing is so bad it makes the image look like a blurry mess.

TN vs. IPS. Both 165Hz, Both G-Sync enabled.

What do you guys think?

vs.

The Acer is showing up elsewhere as an IPS. https://www.acer.com/ac/e...tor-model/UM.HX1AA.001  EDIT: Never mind, it does show up here as TN: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/predator-model/UM.HX1AA.A01 (confusing, just the "A" makes the difference in the model number). I wouldn't pay more than the 599 listed on Acer's site for that one.

Unless you are going ultra-wide, I would go with a 240Hz monitor. Personally, I think the 2560x1440 monitors don't really do anything REALLY well. I have had a PG278Q, Acer x34 and PG258Q... I liked the PG278Q the least. The other two do something really well, but the 278q is stuck in the middle not doing anything REALLY well. The 278q does everything just OK. The x34 is an ultra-wide and looks great in just about everything and adds a ton of immersion. The 258q does FPS games VERY well with the 240Hz.

EDIT: If you play a lot of FPS games, you can't go wrong with 240Hz. If you don't, you really can't go wrong with a good quality ultra-wide.

Ultrawide can come with a slew of game compatibility issues depending on the age of games you play. Some older games require config file fixes, while other's get stuck with pillar boxes. So I would disagree that 16:9 WQHD doesn't do anything well. It's the perfect sweetspot for 980 Ti/1080 Ti gaming at high settings for those who simply prefer to go without ultrawide.

Predator XB1 looks great at $599 for an IPS Panel, 27in, Gsync monitor. Might grab that one.

Super slim bezels too. Might grab 3.

Funny thing about that... If a game doesn't support ultra-wide, the worst you get is to play the game at 2560x1440 the same as it would be on that 27 inch monitor anyway... At least, that was always my thought process behind that argument that people have against UW monitors. It really does not make sense, because if it doesn't support UW you are left with the 27inch monitor at the same resolution... Yes, it might be 44Hz less in the refresh rate, but that low of a difference and good luck telling the difference. Even at 65Hz difference good luck telling the difference...

Coming from team red I needed to upgrade my monitor from a freesync to gsync. I ended up snagging a Dell s2716dg for $400 over presidents day. Loving it do far!

I grabbed an ASUS PG279 and its amazing. Gsync is amazing.

Only thing though, is I cant fdigure out how to enable HDR. The option doesnt show up in Windows display settings but the monitor box says HDR.

Is HDR even available on PC? Is it because im using display port instead of HDMI?

Further googling says you are right. How can a monitor be $600 and not have HDR? Its outrageous. Its unfair!

Where on the box does it say HDR? Genuinely curious, because it definitely is not an HDR-capable panel.

It came out before HDR monitors were out on PC. That monitor came out many years ago.

I feel like I'm all by myself when it comes to this question. I purchased a 1080ti FTW3 its obvious it has G-Sync. my question to the community is, Does it really matter if I get a Freesync monitor with a high refresh such as 144 165 Hz with a 1ms response time rather than spend close to $800 on a G-Sync. Is it truly worth it ?

I gave it a try in 2017, got a Acer Predator 240hz with 1 ms response time from Amazon. I actually could "feel" the difference when gaming. To me personally it didn't "look" any smoother or fluid than a modern TV with interpolated frames, but it "felt" better while gaming is my best way to describe it. And it did seem to be easier to see motion (response time of pixels?). And G-sync made everything smooth. The negatives were that panel sells for over 500 bucks for a TN panel which looks decent but not IPS level, also I like many reviewers had dead pixels which ended up with me RMAing it. And finally, it to me did not appear any more "fluid" than a decent TV and TVs with 240 hz ultimate frames looked better IMO but do not game better. And another drawback is what game are you actually pushing out 240 fps in ultra 1920 x 1080? So I guess I only got to observe 120 hz really. But I bet something lightweight like CS go or quake 3 would have looked insane. G-sync is excellent technology, just wish the things that could use it were much much cheaper.
