Um, what I meant was, was there a noticeable difference in the sound level of your system after you turned off the Seasonic power supply fan as compared to before you turned it off?
You said in your previous post (above) "I can not hear it and the fan is on right now. My case and radiator fans are at 825RPM." I was just trying to see if you noticed a sound level difference with and without the fan on.

Thanks for your patience with my questions. I honestly had my hopes on purchasing an EVGA G3 1000W PSU... that is until I ran across this 'excessive sound level' issue.

None, no change in sound. I actually jumped it and hooked up an old SP120 fan I had to see if it worked first before going to the trouble of replacing the PSU. Then I unplugged the SP120 and I couldn't even here the fan on the Seasonic spin.
I have been gaming for about four hours now and the fan has still yet to kick on. So as far as I am concerned the thing may as well be fanless.

Wow, that's really amazing! Thanks for posting your experience with the Seasonic.
I hope you get many years of good, reliable service out of that PSU.

Small update, the fan kicked on, silently. If I did not happen to look I would have never noticed.

Just to be aware; here are a couple of quotes from others in this thread regarding other power supplies in the EVGA range:

I have no experience with the G3's however so I can't comment on them specifically, but I have had similar experience with their other units. I love EVGA but in my experience as well, their power supplies can be noisy.  I had very similar loud noise issues with the fan cranking up to high RPMs with ECO mode to the point where it became very annoying so I switched to the Corsair PSU I have in my sig. The fan literally never comes on for me, except maybe sometimes in intensive gaming but at that point I'm wearing headphones and my GPU fan becomes the louder fan anyway.  I feel that EVGA needs to apply a more gentle fan curve, or some sort of re-design as there are competitors with lower fan noise for the same wattage size of PSUs.

Own a 1000W G2 and find the fan is incredibly noisy on that model. Didn't realize how loud it is till I rebuilt my computer for silence. Before I had all the fans on blast. Half tempted to RMA to see if maybe it's the fan going bad. Sounds like the fan is grinding on itself. It has been running non-stop for the most part, and on its side in a 900D since July 2013 though. So it's possible it's gone bad.

Edit: Also interesting how the manual says there is an ECO switch but there is in fact not one. Might just go ahead and pick up a 1000W T2 if my sleeved EVGA cables are compatible from the 1000W G2. Or maybe just sell it because I can't trust the fans to be quiet enough from an EVGA PSU. Going to see what Seasonic and Coolmaster have.

Edit 2: Seasonic Prime 1000W Titanium and Cablemod cables on the way.

You’ll note that ECO mode as well as an aggressive fan curve built into the unit(s) are cause for concern. Here’s a quote from @EVGATech_ChrisB regarding ECO mode and how to work with the sound levels of the units.

EVGATech_ChrisB
If ECO is on then the fan will not spin unless needed and if it is needed then it will turn on to cool the unit.  If you are not maxing out this unit then the fan will rarely turn on.  Also one of the reviews for the 550W G3 has noted that the noise was around 27 dBA when the fan was activated.  https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Cases-and-Cooling/EVGA-SuperNOVA-550W-G3-Power-Supply-Review/Efficiency-Differential-Tempera

I can also confirm that if you do not want this type of behavior then you should consider turning ECO mode off and the fan will run all the time to avoid it turning on at a higher RPM.

Please take note that the above is not the same for the 1000W and higher models of the G3 as they are a bigger unit and will have less use of the fan in most cases, depending on the configuration and ambient temps of the room as well.

Thanks to those quoted above and others who have contributed to this thread.

Hey guys! Well after a week of using my new Seasonic Prime Titanium 750w... it's like night and day vs the G3 850w... silence !
Well if you saw the new certification for power supplies ... it's right on the top :)
now I don't know what to do with my G3 :/
well... i can't post link for them since I don't have enough post, search for : Cybenetics Power Supply ratings.

Re: G3 fan noise 2019/09/04 13:07:34 (permalink)
I had a G3 750W which started randomly causing reboots after a year in my work computer. This is a horrible way for a PSU to fail and wasted so much of my work time trying to figure out the source of the reboot: ram, MB, PSU... For example it could go 30 seconds before another reboot, then proceeded to run for over 30 days without a reboot at one point; could not be triggered by load, or ground, etc. Really bad design; there are some IC inside and they could have programmed it to indicate when it detects its own failure, for example by staying off until a wall power cycle, or beeping or a light. I only discovered it was a bad PSU after I swapped supplies into my home rig.

The RMA unit runs very hot at only 40 watts coming in from the wall, and the fan will not turn off at all, eco mode on or off. When the 2nd RMA comes I will not use it; I do not trust it for any computer or a play power supply; maybe for a fireman training burn tower installation? I honestly don't trust EVGA design anymore; it is not designed to fail in a safe way, at least the G3.

Very disappointed in EVGA and won't use them again for PSUs. I knew better and should have bought a Seasonic 12 yr warranty PSU. My company lost well over $2000 paying me to deal with this bad PSU instead of our aerospace projects; and it is not over.

In place of the G3 750W I have an Antec Earthwatts EA-380 Watt supply I've had running in old systems for ages and the fan still works and is quiet. It's sticker is dated 2006. Maybe I'll just spray paint it black and keep it running lol.
