Fry's Electronics closing its doors permanently

https://www.frys.com

After nearly 36 years in business as the one-stop-shop and online resource for high-tech professionals across nine states and 31 stores, Fry’s Electronics, Inc. (“Fry’s” or “Company”), has made the difficult decision to shut down its operations and close its business permanently as a result of changes in the retail industry and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Company will implement the shut down through an orderly wind down process that it believes will be in the best interests of the Company, its creditors, and other stakeholders.

The Company ceased regular operations and began the wind-down process on February 24, 2021. It is hoped that undertaking the wind-down through this orderly process will reduce costs, avoid additional liabilities, minimize the impact on our customers, vendors, landlords and associates, and maximize the value of the Company’s assets for its creditors and other stakeholders.

The Company is in the process of reaching out to its customers with repairs and consignment vendors to help them understand what this will mean for them and the proposed next steps.

If you have questions, please contact us using the following email addresses:

    • For customers who have equipment currently being repaired, please email customerservice@frys.com, to arrange for return of your equipment.

    • For customers with items needing repair under a Performance Service Contract, please call (800) 811-1745.

    • For consignment vendors needing to pick up their consignment inventory at Fry’s locations, please email omnichannel@frys.com.

Please understand if we are a bit slow to respond given the large volume of questions. The Company appreciates your patience and support through this process.

Sincerely,

Fry’s Electronics

Even though they aren't near me either, it is Unfortunate that all the people will be out of a job though.  We need less news like this....

There are at least 5 in my area.  At one time, they were the place to go.  Unfortunately...they fell on hard times and became a "ghost town".  Microcenter put a lot of pressure on them, earlier...and really out "competed" Frys for customer attention with cheaper pricing.  Gonna miss them.  Actually went into one about a month ago...still very little to nothing on the shelves.  Don't know how they made it this long.  Been over a year since they were operating normally.  Many of their employees were there throughout.  Now going to be unemployed...that's terrible!

Definitely unfortunate for the employees. I'm also very surprised they made it this long. Once the microcenter opened up near the one Fry's in our area it just completely fell off the radar. They were always the more expensive, "only go there if noone else has it" option.

Sounds like they didn't keep with the times to be competitive. Why would you want a company like this to stick around? As for jobs lost, maybe a Micro Center or Best Buy will hire them.

Not surprised.  The one near me had hardly any inventory on the shelves.   I asked a manager if they were closing and he said no.

It’s sad but not a shock. I don’t think COVID-19 had anything to do with this happening though. I remember reading posts about half the shelves being empty long before the pandemic.

I was shocked when Bestbuy closed it's doors in Kingston NY.
I went in on a Friday and again the following day to find empty shelves.
No Fry's near me that I know of and I feel for the workers who are out of a job. Same for the employees at the Kingston bb. According to some folks I knew there, there was no warning.

This is what happens when you do not raise or kids right and hand them your company, or hand a good company you built off to your children who lacked the same passion/motivational drive you did. Seen it happen a lot over the years, more so in recently people I know or acquaintances. Have only seen one instance where the father gave his son his company and his son turned it into a power house that stretched to all close by states turning it into a multi million dollar company.

Sad to hear. I've been going there for many years. Now my only other options are Best Buy stores, or Amazon online. More electronic store choices would be better. I was unhappy when Circuit City went out of business. Now this. Not good.

This is sad to see but not too surprised. My dad and I had a weekend ritual to go to Fry's to walk around and browse the store. I even worked there for a year

Unfortunate to hear, but yes it's no surprise. Fry's succumbed to the random lack of focus corporates tend to fall into, chasing any random thing for short-term profit instead of focusing on a core business first. Fry's was attempting to compete directly against Walmart, Best Buy, Gamestop, and Microcenter. Obviously, that wasn't a viable strategy.

With Fry's gone that leaves two Microcenters for the entire state of Texas. Nearest one is a ~7 hour roundtrip. Bit far to go to attempt to buy a GPU  A semi-local company called Altex was doing a better job of out-competing Frys, but at the prices Altex charges I'd only ever buy stuff online. Microcenter would actually get me into the store if they built one near here...

Aye, but Best buy closed down its largest stores years ago when they almost folded, they aggressively scaled back the number and size of stores. Makes it even more silly that if BB can barely maintain its business that Fry's was trying to compete with them for it on the side.

I'm 19, and also live about 1.5 hours from the nearest best buy or any other technology store, so I never knew the joy of walking into a fully stocked fry's. I wish I knew the feeling, but I don't think that dad would let me drive to atlanta for a micro center.
