What is the main reason that doesn't make a big push at Formula BOINC any more? I'm from a competing team and noticed all the drama at the ODLK forum and was curious.

One complaint is that they choose smaller projects that cannot handle the influx of users and do not seem to do much by way of coordinating with the project. Not fun to let your pc's sit idle just because some other guys downloaded 1000's of tasks ahead of time and the project doesn't limit tasks in progress. Also, when FB conflicts with other larger events, our team usually sits out the FB weekend or puts less hardware towards it.

That was all the drama with ODLK. The sprint project hasn't even been chosen and all the work was sucked up by larger teams. I appreciate the input!

If there was a way to make Formula BOINC a fair(and fun!) competition again would there be any interest? Hopefully I won't get banned for posting this(I'm genuinely not spamming, I just got an EVGA 2080ti which is why I think I even have an account). I think if some additional teams jumped back in and it wasn't XS/TSBT vs the world(TAAT and LAF?) it could be interesting again. Hell, I'll crunch for if need be just tell me what project it can make a difference. Thoughts? Am I 10 years too late to this being a viable competition?

We just decided to step back some this year. But the reality is, we are a small team in FB. Maybe 9-10 crunchers that enjoy these competitions. A lot of our team crunch projects they like and don’t even read the forum. In fact we started this team with the unwritten rule of “no pressure”, to get away from the pressure of FAH. So the rah rah stuff only goes so far here. We could be competitive in league 2 if we put our minds to it. That is not a goal or anything, it‘s reality. I think this year is just different with people wanting to contribute to COVID-19 Projects as a rule as well. I’ll see if there is work available for this weeks project but will not stress about it. please keep throwing idea’s at us though.

I agree with yodap's post above. The sprints seem to cripple many projects, especially smaller ones. However, sprints are where our team has traditionally gotten a bunch of our overall points. As a smaller FB team, it's an uphill battle for us to compete in many of the league 1 marathons.

One thing I had considered is trying to get a group of teams together to all vote on a predetermined project, and post it publicly so that it's open and clear what the 'coalition' is voting on. This would also allow for letting the project administrator know that it is likely they will be chosen for the Sprint project since it's known they're about to get a bunch of votes, and would take away some of the behind the scenes scheming, etc. It would honestly be better if they just took away the voting, and were mindful to pick projects that could handle the sprint, but as long as they're allowing voting it's the best I've come up with. Thoughts?

I think I'm probably just several years too late to the DC competitions to be honest. When I was a lot younger(with no money) Big ADV was a thing and I remember thinking how cool it was seeing people build these giant 4P Folding machines and whatnot even though it was always out of reach for me. Now that I'm older I can buy a video card here or there or build a PC without it being a huge deal(though I probably still wouldn't build some crazy high core EPYC machine), and most of the competitions are not incredibly welcoming to people that don't do all the behind the scenes strategy and stuff. If you guys end up in league 2 I think that would probably be beneficial for your team, to be honest, and hopefully that evens the playing field with who you're competing against and makes it a funner contest for you guys. My username on Anandtech with TeAm Anandtech is Icecold, I think what happened on this site was I created an account when I bought a video card thinking it was just for future purchases and it made it my forum account name and I can't change it. I wasn't trying to obfuscate or anything like that. Best of luck to you guys, and if there's ever a really close competition you need just a bit of help on send me a PM or something. Other teams have their users switch teams all the time, so it seems like fair play at this point. I do think I'm going to effort trying to get a bunch of teams on board with voting for a single project each time and posting to the Formula BOINC forum AHEAD OF TIME what the project is. That would make it to where other larger teams don't need to thrash small projects in anticipation of them being picked, because hopefully my alliance of a bunch of random smaller teams has already announced what we're voting on. ODLK has been without work for 24 hours with 500k+ tasks held up, it has caused that project to be put out of commission for the time being, and I'm sure has caused great stress to the project scientist which all seems contradictory to what we should be working towards.

I guess they don't pay attention to other challenges/races. There is already a Prime Grid challenge going on.

You can set BOINC to use 50% of CPUs, leave hyperthreading on, and run PrimeGrid on CPU. SRbase can be setup to run GPU tasks only, so it is possible to participate in both events.

Are you sure about SRbase GPU work? A quick look came up empty.

It's based around the Formula 1 Race schedule. It is inconvenient though when it conflicts with other challenges, etc.

Also, the GPU "TF" tasks have a much higher point return than the CPU tasks.
