Hey, I am trying to get my CPU to fold. My GPU is just fine 600k PPD. In web control I have it set to full power but where the CPU tab is there is a yellow circle. There is a slot for CPU in preferences so it is active. Plz halp!

Personally I wouldn't fold on the cpu, just isn't worth it.

Check your log.  Might be a server issue or they are out of units to assign.  It happens from time to time.

Might need to reduce cpu core amount to get work from server

I get this alot too. I'll maybe get one assignment a day, then it runs out. Shame too since the CPU ones seem to give a ton more points than GPU ones and it goes faster for me (Xeon 1231 vs. GTX1060)

Whats the PPD on your Xeon 1231? How many cores/threads are you running?

Its about 250k PPD on the CPU vs 125k PPD on the 1060.

Re: For some reason my CPU isn't folding. 2016/08/19 11:16:34 (permalink)
If you use the CPU use Threads evenly like 4, 6, or 8 Threads.
Your CPU http://ark.intel.com/products/82931/Intel-Core-i7-5930K-Processor-15M-Cache-up-to-3_70-GHz
8 or 10 Threads CPU and One Thread for the GTX 980Ti.
Do not use Odd number of Threads or Cores. Make sure if Folding on your GPU to allow it one Thread.
So if you have a 4 Core 8 Thread CPU you could go 6 Threads CPU and One GPU using one Thread and the other Thread for the OS.
Or 2 Cores for the CPU and 1 Core for the GPU, But then it would not be worth the cost to run them.
You also would need to set the Client Software to FULL and not use the Computer for anything else.

?
CPU -v- GPU and being a GTX 1060 their is no way a CPU can produce more then the GPU!

I once found and read a Post on their Support Forum that talked about this but cannot seem to find it now.
I remember that it talked about the minimum of 2 Cores or 4 Threads.
The Max if I recall back when the BigAdv were out it was 64 Cores or 64 Threads.
I am still looking for the post and will update this post when I find it.

Re: For some reason my CPU isn't folding. 2016/08/19 14:50:11 (permalink)
Once the BigAdv stopped I split my 4P or 64 Cores into 4 16 Core and Folded what is now out (formerly SMP slot).

https://folding.stanford.edu/home/guide/configuration-guide/ also talks about the number of Cores
V7 was designed to utilize multiple CPU cores with a multi-cored CPU slot (formerly SMP slot) and a GPU slot for each supported GPU. This configuration uses a lot more resources compared to using just a single CPU core. While CPU and GPU folding are much more scientifically productive compared to their single core CPU slot counterpart, they should not be run on machines which cannot tolerate heavy use. If FAH is using too much resources, please adjust the slot configurations to suit the computing needs. See the suggestions below. See also the Installation Guides for basic setup instructions. And help is always available on the Folding Support Forum.

Re: For some reason my CPU isn't folding. 2016/08/19 15:19:58 (permalink)
Well the client had set it to 11 on my 5820k cpu and wasn't getting any wu's. So I set it to 8 and it picked up a wu right away. CPU is at 4.2Ghz and the PPD on this wu is 32,935. Using ProcessLasso to set the affinity and priority. CPU client gets 0 to 7, GPU gets 8 to 9 and the system gets 10 to 11. Priority set on high for the CPU and GPU clients. Don't know how ElemancerZzei is getting 250k PPD?

If the client said 11 did it mean 12 threads starting at 0? If I have it set to 8 is it 9 threads? Maybe I have the client configured wrong?

Then setting it to 10 gave you none as well?
And yes the software is not very smart when it come to setting up the CPU.
How Many GPU's are in this Computer?
Also remember about the Odd v Even Numbers, I know someone on the Forum calls this something else sorry I do not recall what they said.

Then if you are not using the computer you could go with 10 CPU and 1 for the GPU and one free or neutral leaving it for the OS.

So set ProcessLasso to give the CPU 0 to 9 the GPU 10 and the System 11? Set the client to 10 on the CPU?

I think his numbers are not quite correct, miss typed maybe and that is why I asked.
The only CPU task that could out do a GPU was the BigAdv a few years back.
The GPU Took over after they dropped the BigAdv Tasks and at ending you needed 32 Cores or Threads to even run them.
The BigAdv is what gave me Points I have today.

That is also why it is not worth Folding on the CPU anymore.

Nope, you are correct about it.
The big problem was Stanford had so many SMP Tasks to complete they upped the credit after BigAdv ended and then slowly reduced them.

Ill have to reinstall the folding program but i can take whatever screenshots anyone wants. I got the numbers based on the advanced viewer numbers shown which seem to change wildly. But basically when i run both the GPU and CPU it says "350k PPD" roughly (again, fluxuates). When the CPU doesnt have work it goes down to about 100k. Also, the CPU work goes about 50% faster than my gtx1060 which is what i assume is the reason for why my cpu PPD is higher.

To get a real feel for what your computer can really do you need to run non-stop for at least 48 hours and you have complete more then 10 WU and have a Passkey;
If not here is the link http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py  http://folding.stanford.edu/home/faq/faq-passkey/
Then you will see just how much more GPU Tasks will produce over your CPU Tasks.

Well if the CPU is onlu issued one WU per day (or two) then of course the GPU will out perform it. Can you not use the estimator thats shown on the advanced control page for at least rough comparisoning?

Also i uninstalled the program because it was unable to run for longer than 6 hours without hard crashing my computer. I dont blame folding@home, but my own comp.

Yes after you complete post http://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2535938 above.
You cannot really get a good feel about Folding @ Home with only completing 12 WU on your computer and each computer will not be the same.
Also each WU will run different even if from the same Project Number.

In response to your PM, yes that is the CPU I have (although I got mine for $175) and Yes i've had a passkey from the first WU. And yes, when both were running the estimated PPD was approx 350k but when the CPU ran out of work it would drop down to about 100K. This was just the estimated PPD section but it was fairly consistent but would fluxuate by a few thousand PPD as it folded. So if that tool is not even remotely accurate, then no problems at all.

Again, I'll reinstall  and do some screenshots later this weekend. Today is UFC day so i'm not going to be able to sit down on the comp.

Is there a max number of cores/threads you can use?

Yes the current max is 24, below that its 20,16,15,12,10,9,6,5,4,3 & 2.  I'm not sure about 18.  The basic rule is if it is a prime greater than 5 or is a multiple of a prime greater than 5 don't use it.

Back in the bigadv days no one actually found the upper limit on thread count, tests were run on 96 and 128 threads and no problems were found other than crap performance due to the chip arch used on the xeons.

The max amount a cpu will get is about 120k PPD, that's for 24 cores - not HT threads.  That's on a pair of 12 core xeons.
