We need your help! Folding@home is joining researchers around the world working to better understand the 2019 Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) to accelerate the open science effort to develop new life-saving therapies. By downloading Folding@Home, you can donate your unused computational resources to the Folding@home Consortium, where a research team at Memorial Sloan Kettering is working to advance our understanding of the structures of potential drug targets for 2019-nCoV that could aid in the design of new therapies. The data you help us generate will be quickly and openly disseminated as part of an open science collaboration of multiple laboratories around the world, giving researchers new tools that may unlock new opportunities for developing lifesaving drugs.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I literally welled up in tears reading that. We have the capability of doing so much IMMEDIATE good! I'm SO proud to be part of this team and this program!

And I whole heartedly include EVERY ONE of the BOINC members in the 'team' because even if we're running differing projects? It's ALL for the same goal/betterment.

This is great news after a week of crappy news and maybe Wall Street should read it and and fire up their rigs for something good.

Yes it is, I am actually enjoying being on the Beta Team and I bypass the admins on the site.  Bruce is nothing but Mr. Control freak.  I am working straight with the team working on Folding and not forum moderators that get corrected half the time by the real team.

GPU's set to cure! I like this a lot. A better solution than no sense of urgency.

Is there a way to set Folding@home to run data only for the  Corona virus, or will it automatic run it due to it being a priority?

Right now, the Folding Team at Stanford are assigning the Covid 19 work higher priority when it hits production telling people to chose the 'Any' category to ensure that it's allowed to be given priority.

They don't have, at the moment, a mechanism in the current client to dynamically update the choices in that list, but are discussing that addition for future clients.

(All the info was gathered from the twitters of John Chodera, who is leading the Folding study work on Covid 19, and Dr. Greg Bowman, who's the lead of Folding @ Home)

It should be good since this virus is doing well in South Korea and Australia which doesn't seem to slow down even when the temperature outside is in the 90F range like the flu does. This means we are likely to have this as a year round problem until a vaccine is found and even then we will probably have problems not catching it as immunity fades over time and people who didn't get a shot or have one wearing off will catch the virus.

There is news on the FaH Beta Forum about new projects for Coronavirus research, see: CORONAVIRUS PROJECTS coming to BETA

You have to log in to FaH-Forum to read these posts, but I will quote the posts here:

by rafwiewiora » Mon Mar 09, 2020

Thank you all for your patience as we spent a week deciding on how to best use the awesome extra power we've gotten from all you folks wanting to help out with the coronavirus effort. We've settled on 6 projects for now, and there's a lot of new biochemistry data coming in that we'll most likely set up more projects with.

Here are short descriptions of the projects -- please give us a few more days to get you a full blog post explaining more biochemistry and what your work can achieve with these projects. In general, we're looking for alternative conformations and hidden pockets within the most promising drug targets, which can only be seen in simulation and not in static crystal / cryo-EM structures. There's some very fresh drug screening data coming out now for some of these, which we'll use to validate the simulations and help direct the screening efforts -- collecting as much data, as rapidly as possible will be crucial, and thank you again for making that possible!

All projects are using the new OpenMM GPU Core22.

To add to that on what's happening with these projects in the next few days: if no major problems in beta, I will be moving to both advanced and F@h tomorrow -- all client type flags will remain set, so you don't have to make any changes no matter which one you're using. Thanks again to everyone!

CPU projects are coming...
We are announcing two new Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 causing virus) protease simulations for GRO_A7 core.
Due to the recent high demand for these projects, we are trying to push them through to FAH asap.
I have been benchmarking points with Slack testers on Internal who have reported a high variance in TPF and thus PPD.
Let us know if you see any and we are working on adding project description pages

I had some time this week so I decided to put some spare GPUs to work!

I have all of the following running now:
EVGA RTX 2080 Ti XC Ultra (In my main system, not shown)
EVGA RTX 2070 Super Black (In my LAN rig, not shown)
EVGA RTX 2070 XC Ultra
GTX 1650 Super (In my Plex server, not shown)
Titan X Pascal
GTX 1080 Ti
GTX 1050 (In my HTPC, not shown)
Radeon VII (In my secondary gaming rig, not shown)
RX Vega 64 LE
RX 5700 XT
RX 5500 XT
RX 580
RX 480

I still need to put together one more system, but all of the better GPUs are folding now. The result?

Hopefully the power bill won't be too crazy....

And even more power...

We've had a very unexpected, and a super amazing, major increase in power last night due to a cloud computing company donating a major amount of GPUs -- some of you might still be seeing the Core22 test project instead of the CoV ones, I apologize, with the current demand the servers are rather slow in making the extra copies of the CoV projects, but this should be resolved by tomorrow (well, except if we get another unexpected major donation.. :) ).
