Folding@Home Trouble Shooting Guide
This is just some simple things that some overlook that might help some new people getting started.

Are you getting Lower than expected PPD (Points Per Day)
  • Make sure each client has a different machine ID
  • Double check the spelling of your folding name and team number in each of your clients
  • If you have a CPU and GPU folding, try using Process lasso or WinAFC to set affinity and priority of clients ( Cpu- idle / GPU - realtime)
  • Check to make sure your GPU is folding at full 3d clocks

GPU Folding in 2d clocks
  • First try restarting your pc , then re-fire clients to see if that helped
  • Try lowering your overclock,To high of an overclock can cause the driver to stop responding and cause it to downclock
  • Set performance mode in Nvidia Control Panel
  • Try settings in RivaTuner to force 3d clocks
  • Card might be overheating forcing it to downclock Check temps , Maybe need to reapply TIM or check for artifacts for a bad card
  • Always keep the viewer closed, it can cause many system errors.Use HFM.net or FahMon to monitor your progress.

Not Getting bonus Points
  • Make sure you have a passkey Here
  • You must have completed 10 A3 workunits before you will start receiving bonus points
  • Check to see if you are completing the workunits before the deadline
  • Make sure you have a windows password ( Windows password is no longer required with the latest version (6.30))
  • Make sure you are above the 80% completion rate (too many failed/ late wus will drop you below) to remain eligible for the bonus

400 series card won't fold
  • Make sure you have the correct client, 400 series need the need GPU3 Client to fold GPU3 Client here
  • Stanford on the GPU3 Client  Guide
  • Console Client for GPU3 can be found Here
  • Add this flag to your command line in the shortcut -forcegpu nvidia_fermi
  • Also take a look at thie Guide from Stanford on the GPU3 client Here

Getting a non-Fermi GPU and Fermi GPU  in the same system to fold
  • Using A Fermi GPU & A Non-Fermi GPU In One System
When combining a Fermi GPU with a Non-Fermi GPU, the Fermi GPU will fold FahCore_15 WUs while the Non-Fermi GPU will fold FahCore_11 WUs. However, if the Non-Fermi GPU attempts to fold a FahCore_15 WU, it will result in an error. These are the following options you have:

Option 1: Use these arguments with the correct GPU:
Fermi GPU: -forcegpu nvidia_fermi
Non-Fermi GPU: -forcegpu nvidia_g80

Option 2: Run one instance of GPU2 Client for the Non-Fermi one and one instance of the GPU3 BETA Client for the Fermi one. IMO, you may want to use the Console Version of both Clients as all the files are included in it and it is a no-nonsense version which makes it easier to set-up and reduces the possibility of errors.

This is just some of the things that i can think of that people don't know about or overlook.

Please feel free to post things that i forgot or don't know about myself, it will only make the list better.I will add them to the list as they are posted.

Hopefully this will be helpful to some.

    nice guide and tips :)

btw, i´ve noticed that if you have a second monitor attached to the main Card it will downclock your clocks to 2D while folding... don´t ask me why but i was having this issue and then unplugged the second monitor and since that, i never saw a downclock again :)

    Hey Big Z!

Thanx for all the cool stuff you do around here!

Maybe add don't open the viewer, (cause of slower ppd or crash) use hfm.net instead, and don't use remote desktop, which will mess up gpu folding.

Thanx again for all your work!

is the the flag -forcegpu nvidia_fermi only if it wont fold or you have a multi gpu setup? sorry if its obvious but i wasnt quite sure when you need it

The answer is it's only needed for muti-GPU setups, and you're right it's not obvious
Here's some real good info from Stanford about different Fermi setups and combinations:

or for the 460, if it doesn´t want to fold otherwise. Seems to be hit and miss with them

Ah, yes ... I have heard of that being a problem with 460's, forgot about that..
So I guess it's safe to say use it if everthing else is set up correctly and it still wont recognize the card.

I've tried everything in every guide on the internet with no success getting my 460 to fold.  Using Jedi's tracker program.  SMP works fine,  just can't get the 460 to work.  Keep getting the "error starting folding core"  error and "species not recognized"  in the log file.  Tried the fermi flag with no success.

Uninstall your gpu client software. Then go into C:\Users\{your user name}\AppData\Roaming\Folding@home-gpu and delete everything in there except the client.cfg file. You will have to go into Control Panel Folder Options and turn on show hidden files and folders to see the AppData folder.

Then reinstall the GPU3 client software.

    Well done!

Just a small thing to add:

If your GPU downclocks, close your GPU client -> right click on Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager -> Display Adapters -> Right click on your card that is at 2D speeds -> Disable -> Then when screen refreshes and everything is huge, right click -> Enable.

This way people don't have to restart everything when a driver decides it wants 2D speeds

Ok try this. Take out both the gpu 0 and force fermi flags. Set the client as machine 2.

EDIT: I also want to make sure on this cause you didn't answer, but you only have one video card in this system, right?

Changed ID to 3 because SMP is using 2.  Removed the flagss and still no good.

Just the 460.  I am running the new beta driver that fixed the BFBC2 issues right now,  but I have tried 258.96 on past attempts.

When you say beta driver, are you talking the leaked 260.52 driver or the beta 260.63 driver from nVidia's site?
