Re: Folding for wrinvert- May 23rd to June 23rd 2016/05/30 00:37:13 (permalink)
My apologies to the Folding team, and to Wrinvert, for having to decline.

I can't risk losing another GPU, even if the two I still have could even fold anymore.  This has not been a good year for me regarding hardware failures, and to fire up in full response for this effort would be tempting Murphy's Law to come down on my head in the most expensive ways possible.

Yes, the former me would probably have laughed at danger and fired up everything I could and gone digging through parts bins to try making something else work.  I know that.  The former me also didn't spend 6 months in the dark, with no way of using the internet.  I have.  I also don't have the hardware reserves I once did.  Back then, if I blew up my main system, I had a backup plan sitting not too far away.  Sure, it wouldn't be as stable or as fast, but it existed.

Currently, I have two systems.  I have my SR-2, which needs new fans on the H80i Corsair coolers if I even wanted to think about firing up SMP, and it has a GTX 275 and a GTS 250 in it.  I used to have two GTX 580's in it, too, but they don't work anymore.  One has severe overheating issues, the other throws artifacts under load and eventually crashes the system.

My other system is a really crappy Acer laptop with a 1.3ghz Celeron in it, 4 GB of DDR2, and integrated graphics.  It also has a half-dead keyboard and a touchpad that really doesn't work anymore.  It also used to take more than a week to fold a uniprocessor work unit, which unless something dramatically changed in the past few years, isn't worth it.

So, I'm sure you can see why I'm reluctant to push my main system right now.  If I lose any one single component in the SR-2, I go from a 12 core, 24 thread beast that can do quite a bit, to a 1 core, 1 thread pain that can't even play Minecraft without shuddering.

As stated above, I do apologize for not participating.

I hope Wrinvert gets better, or that you guys find the cure for him in the meantime.

Hey all,

I know long time no see, yes the insaniac/maniac duo (Madrias up there ^) are still around. I'm sorry to say I can't fold either, it is tempting. I have a new build, from scratch had nothing but the HAF case, I had a power surge wreck havoc on my computer, the surge protector power board I had it on didn't protect it at all, at the same time I got a virus... it's a long story. I had to turf everything and start new, a little over a year ago I built my first computer from scratch, took me a day (say 9am - 6pm) OS and all, something I'd never done before, I've never seen Mad so pleased and proud as I didn't ask him any questions. So I'm being careful with this build I don't want to put strain on it. I do miss folding though and the team challenges.

I don't know if Wrinvert would recall me though please send him my regards and well wishes ♥ Shy

FOLD ON!!

Wow, there's a blast from the past. Glad to see both Mad and Shy here. We all understand where your coming from. And I'm sure that wrinvert will be just as happy that you stopped by and left a message.

It is certainly nice to see such a great response from the community - both the currently active members and a lot of the old timers coming back to support this cause.  There were also many responses (some private) that wished they were able to contribute but for various reasons are unable to fold at the moment.  The unanimous response from everyone has been support for Todd in this time - whether expressed through throwing some hardware toward his name or verbal support, prayers, and well wishes.  An incredible response from an amazing community!

I second, third and carry forth the motion! I think we have a nominee for COTQ/FOTQ for this quarter, if not an outright tried and true hero of folding. His passion, his heart and his desire are all exhibited here.

I'm still in the process on moving to Skylake but as soon as I'm done I'll start folding (1 or 2 days). Thank you for sharing and thank you troy8d for the PM.

At the rate the points keep going up i do not think it will be a far stretch even with people not being able to run 24/7 to meet the 1 billion goal.

I will be offline until Saturday at least. With the Verizon strike, they haven't been installing networks in the local area for nearly 2 months now.

Sprinx
Like others, I got a PM from troy8d about this a few days ago. I'm folding under wrinvert's name now, with my paltry GTX 680.

Folding is up and running. Still I had to remain only on SSD because after I've finished my transition to Skylake one of the HDDs started to develop a clicking noise thus I've disconnected all mechanical drives...my W10 does not perform well (cannot install or uninstall some programs-luckily F@H worked) and after the milestone is achieved I'll have to do a fresh install. Anyway in about 4 hours my client should finish first WU on GPU.
My question is if I should let the CPU also fold or should I stop it? Thank you.

Just spun up my 970s and flipped them to Todd's info. I'll be able to run them flat out for a couple of days.

With absolutely no tweaking or optimizing, I avg between 550k and 750k ppd on two 970 GTX cards at about 60% of the power needed by my old 770s.

The 970's were excellent for folding. Lower power usage while still folding very good numbers. My 970FTW's were good for 300k to 375k PPD depending on the unit. I cant wait to see the numbers for 1080 and 1070. Should be pretty good though, with a decent amount less power than 900 series.

I've seen estimates on the 1080s that indicate we should see roughly 750k ppd on a single 1070 with lower power draw. I plan on ending up with a dual 1070 setup, so I could potentially be looking at 1.5M ppd . . . It's good to be living in the future! *laughs*

Also, we're looking to be pushing a total of ~980 million points for Todd at our current rates! We need to step it up a bit to clear 1 Billion points, folks!!

Currently twiddling my thumbs in frustration - TeamViewer has gone down globally, so I don't have access to my systems at home, so I can't monitor our hourly updates. I can't even get to Google docs through the work proxy . . .
