wow i've never heard of OCing through a windows application... are they generally as stable as going through the bios to tweak the settings?

Do I have a bad motherboard? 

I follow the steps and when running prime95 I get errors in my workers if I set the QPI just 2 mhz above the stock of 133 This is on my i7 920. This is with everything set on auto.

I'm using patriot tri channel ram with the XMI profile latencys. It automatically changed the DIMM voltage to manufacturer specified 1.65V and the VTT voltage shows as 1.15V under auto.

I have no errors running p95 at stock QPI of 133 and when increased to 134. But the moment I got to 135 or higher I get errors and the workers start shutting off.

Thanks for the guide. I had no problem overclocking my GPU because it was so easy to do through windows and then just benchmark using something like furmark or 3DMark.
 
I never tried to overclock my CPU really because all the bios settings with FSBs and QPIs and having memory in sync with that stuff confused the heck out of me. I have an i7 920 and just used EVGAs Dummy OC, which took it to about 3.2ghz. I followed the steps and raised my QPI to 180 (3.6ghz) as of right now and it's stable and only took about 30 minutes. It was really easy too do.
 
However, as soon as I raised the QPI any further and did the Prime95 stress I got a blue screen with the 124 error, meaning I need more VTT CPU voltage or VCORE voltage.
 
I don't know if I should stop here and live with it or keep going? My CPU temps only got to the high 50s. How do I know how much to raise my voltage so I'm not totally overkilling it but still making a difference? I see the VCORE goes 1.2 -> 1.20625 as the next step. Is the .00625 voltage enough to make any difference? Should I keep doing it in .00625 steps until I stop getting the blue screen error?

How long are you suppose to run prime95? I got my i7 930 to 4ghz and ran prime95 for an hour with no problems and ran 3dmark 06 and scored a 26227(i need to get vantage). Been using my computer for several hours now and it seems stable enough for me, but i don't plan to use 4ghz for everyday use(just wanted to do it cause its cool and fast as hell). If the pc isn't perfectly stable(can run prime 95 forever) can this hurt the processor?

 
 
You probably want a good 8 to 12 hour run of Prime95 to be sure of stability. There is always some risk of failure with overclocking. But to be honest, I have kept my i7s under 100% load 24/7 for about 1.5 years at 3.8-4.3GHz depending on season and the processors are still running strong to date. The main thing to look out for is that the temperatures are cool enough. I keep my cores temps below 70C loaded.

Also, everybody keeps throwing around cpu temps, i look at the core temps since they are hotter than what the cpu temp is showing. I get 65 max cpu temps on prime95 but my max core is 82, 38-40 idle core temps and 24 idle cpu. Which temps are most important?

The core temps are what you want to look at. 82C for a few hours of full load is probably okay but I like to keep the temps cooler than that out of personal preference.

I followed the 4.2 ghz setup from you Shansmi and works like a charm so i only added 205x20/21 on clock ratio. instead of 200x20

Awesome write up, I was having issues with some new memory not being stable, I went off the 1600MHz RAM template now I'm up and running, thanks!

Guess I'm dusting off an old thread but I resurrected my old Classy E759 920 DO rig for nostalgic reasons and got her up to 3.8ghz with 19 bclk and 200mhz fsb 1.33 v cpu/ +100vtt and 1600mhz ram. Only thing is once in a while but often enough I've noticed my sound card drivers get corrupted and got to re-enable the sound device. Was wondering what voltage ich or ioh do I need to increase? Maybe more vcore??

Maybe its the voltage but since I think it happens at high fsb speeds not sure. My 3.3 is like at 3.0 v right now. Could be.
