Trying to OC the i7 920 I won from the affiliate rewards draw and not having much luck. I'm good with LGA 775 overclocking but I'm confused as hell with LGA 1366. Could someone help me out by posting a bios template with some basic settings please.
I would like to get it to 3.8ghz or higher if possible. Thanks in advance.
Here are my specs:

- EVGA X58SLI E758-A1
- i7 920 D0
- G-Skill DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24 1.5V: http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=110
- Cooler Master V8 cooler
- Ultra X4 750W
- Asus 8800GT
- Hitachi 1.0TB sata 300
- LG 24X Lightscribe DVD burner

Do I have a bad motherboard?

I follow the steps and when running prime95 I get errors in my workers if I set the QPI just 2 mhz above the stock of 133 This is on my i7 920. This is with everything set on auto.

I'm using patriot tri channel ram with the XMI profile latencys. It automatically changed the DIMM voltage to manufacturer specified 1.65V and the VTT voltage shows as 1.15V under auto.

I have no errors running p95 at stock QPI of 133 and when increased to 134. But the moment I got to 135 or higher I get errors and the workers start shutting off.

I have the x58 SLI LE M/B

Here is my CPU i7-920
Here is my ram Patriot Tri Channel 1600mhz ram

[Edit: Sorry just read some posts, will make a new thread instead of asking for help here]

A very detailed guide... I am planning to upgrade my rig soon (currently a 680i q6600). Now I know where to come when trying to overclock it...

Thanks!

Im not going to lie, this would be much easier for n00bs if it had screen shots like the other guide does.

Hey what would it take settings wise to go past 4.2 on water? I want to take this awesome guide and see how far past I can go stable on water.

Any ideas would be great.

I'm prime95 stable overnight, but just had IE 8.0 crash on me.  It could be a website, or it might be my overclock - booooo...If it's the overclock - any ideas what voltage might need to be raised a bit for an IE crash?  IE resumed immediately and my computer didn't crash otherwise.

Re:How to Overclock the I7 (Ported) 2011/01/02 18:16:26 (permalink)
Thanks for the guide. I had no problem overclocking my GPU because it was so easy to do through windows and then just benchmark using something like furmark or 3DMark.

I never tried to overclock my CPU really because all the bios settings with FSBs and QPIs and having memory in sync with that stuff confused the heck out of me. I have an i7 920 and just used EVGAs Dummy OC, which took it to about 3.2ghz. I followed the steps and raised my QPI to 180 (3.6ghz) as of right now and it's stable and only took about 30 minutes. It was really easy too do.

However, as soon as I raised the QPI any further and did the Prime95 stress I got a blue screen with the 124 error, meaning I need more VTT CPU voltage or VCORE voltage.

I don't know if I should stop here and live with it or keep going? My CPU temps only got to the high 50s. How do I know how much to raise my voltage so I'm not totally overkilling it but still making a difference? I see the VCORE goes 1.2 -> 1.20625 as the next step. Is the .00625 voltage enough to make any difference? Should I keep doing it in .00625 steps until I stop getting the blue screen error?

How long are you suppose to run prime95? I got my i7 930 to 4ghz and ran prime95 for an hour with no problems and ran 3dmark 06 and scored a 26227(i need to get vantage). Been using my computer for several hours now and it seems stable enough for me, but i don't plan to use 4ghz for everyday use(just wanted to do it cause its cool and fast as hell). If the pc isn't perfectly stable(can run prime 95 forever) can this hurt the processor?

Also, everybody keeps throwing around cpu temps, i look at the core temps since they are hotter than what the cpu temp is showing. I get 65 max cpu temps on prime95 but my max core is 82, 38-40 idle core temps and 24 idle cpu. Which temps are most important?
system specs and bios setting below
QPI=191
Multiplier = 21
uncore freq= 3061x16
vcore 1.26 w/o vdrop(couldnt get it stable with vdrop,)
vtt(+50mV)
ICH(1.1 V)
IOH(1.1 V)
DRAMM(1.6)
target mem 1530mhz
All the rest is on auto.

i7 930 @ 4.00 ghz
EVGA gtx 480 @ 800
EVGA 3x sli classified MB
(3x2gb) 1600mhz DDR3 ADATA Gaming RAM
And a piece of (Deleted for Foul Language) power supply that needs replaced.

You probably want a good 8 to 12 hour run of Prime95 to be sure of stability. There is always some risk of failure with overclocking. But to be honest, I have kept my i7s under 100% load 24/7 for about 1.5 years at 3.8-4.3GHz depending on season and the processors are still running strong to date. The main thing to look out for is that the temperatures are cool enough. I keep my cores temps below 70C loaded.

The core temps are what you want to look at. 82C for a few hours of full load is probably okay but I like to keep the temps cooler than that out of personal preference.

linuxrouter: Core temps dont get over 65 when gaming with the 4ghz. My everyday setup is 3.36 ghz with a 1.2 vcore with vdrop. longest i ran prime 95 was about 4 hours with that setup and had core temps in the low 60s. Dont like running cpu for 10 hrs with 100% load. been running that setup for 5 months with no BSODs or weird lockups(except for google chrome).

Hi im new to this forum.

i was wondering if any 1 have a setup for 4,4ghz or 4,5ghz

My Spec:
EVGA X58 SLI LE
newest bios version
i7 920 CPU at 4,3ghz stabil
12 gig ram Dominator DHX 1600mhz
70H Corosair water cooling temps on normal load is 30+
Graphic card HIS Radeon HD 5970

I followed the 4.2 ghz setup from you Shansmi and works like a charm so i only added 205x20/21 on clock ratio. instead of 200x20

Help plz :)

i have copyed the 4,2ghz spec from this guide, and have been doing P95 for 15 min now without any errors or anything also testing my ram with P95 working on 100% so far max temp is at 80 degrees on 100% load both ram and cpu.

so i wonder what i need to increase to get stabil at 4,4 or 4,5ghz

also set maximum payload size for PCI Express to 4008.

Only thing that annoys me is that in windows it says 3,99 ghz and not 4,2 but on evga eleet it says 4189mhz 4,18ghz

Guess I'm dusting off an old thread but I resurrected my old Classy E759 920 DO rig for nostalgic reasons and got her up to 3.8ghz with 19 bclk and 200mhz fsb 1.33 v cpu/ +100vtt and 1600mhz ram. Only thing is once in a while but often enough I've noticed my sound card drivers get corrupted and got to re-enable the sound device. Was wondering what voltage ich or ioh do I need to increase? Maybe more vcore??

Thanks

Have you checked your psu voltages? My brother was having trouble with his sound card quit working also. His problem was low voltage on 3.3v rail on his psu. Put in new psu and all was good. About 2.96v is where I've noticed problems  start happening on x58 systems.

Hi,

Maybe its the voltage but since I think it happens at high fsb speeds not sure. My 3.3 is like at 3.0 v right now. Could be.

Thanks

Try downloading and running hwmonitor in the background while you are doing some kind of intensive work on the computer for a while.Check and see what the lowest reading the voltage reports afterwards. If it ever goes below 2.96 get another psu.

That was how we found out what was wrong with my bros. computer. The sound would drop out everytime 3.3v went below 2.96v.
