Its been a great run with my X79 Dark, GTX 760 and i7-4930K on windows 7.  I have never really had the need to upgrade the system, but it has been showing its age.  So come to find out Steam will stop running on Win7 machines and I dont even think my equipment will run on win10/11.

So... what are ya'lls opinions on upgrades.  Been a bit out of the loop.

Your hardware should run on Windows 10 no issues, but even 10 is losing support slowly. I am reluctant to upgrade to 11 right now.

The key you used for 7 will work for the same level of win10 IE: pro will get you pro home will get you home version. And 10 will work fine on a x79 board I still have a couple I use with that combo.

If you are going to do a full format/install since the key is locked to the MB, when you install the new windows strange things can happen. So you can remove the key from the MB by this command.

To uninstall Windows 10 Product Key from the MB to reuse.
Press Windows key + X then click Command Prompt (Admin). At the command prompt, enter the following command: slmgr.vbs /upk

Then reformat install win10, when it asks for a key during install skip that (no key) and finish installing win10.
Once installed and updated go to activate windows and put the key in and activate it.

I'm running W10 64 on a similar set-up to yours Nateman. Plus Bill has some great tips.
Unfortunately W10 will come to an end of support eventually.

You totally need to upgrade and it needs to be able to run Windows 11 in this case.

Just tell her you're the "King of the castle" and by decree you ordered a new MB, ram and video and sound card.
Simple as that!

You might want to see what your requirements are for a PC and then choose an AMD or Intel motherboard, CPU, PSU, memory, and video card. Prices for desktop CPUs and memory have fallen a bit so it will be a good time to buy.

Even SSD prices have dropped. I Recently picked up a couple 2TB SATA drives just for game storage and got an external SSD as well since prices have dropped so much including for M.2 drives.

Ohh heck, sorry bro. Now I'm remembering you telling me about all the crashes and bad things you have been having. And all the frustration with that. Mine has been having the same "issues" as well. Must be something in that chipset. I'm not sure if mine is the MB, CPU, or RAM....It seems there is no choice but an replacement.

Yeah, I understand these committee required approvals.
Whatever you end up doing, there is a chance your PSU won't work. I have an Enermax Galaxy 1000w - rock solid for years, rails under load are above spec, but it's practically 15 years old. Everyone told me get a new PSU, so I did. But somewhere between swapping Z690 boards around, I tried using the Galaxy to just bench start a Z690...couldn't do it. Board would light up, but it would never boot. I had to disconnect my installed new PSU to bench start a board, and it booted up fine. I never did find out what trigger in a new MB would prevent it from starting up with an old 1000W psu.

Hey Nateman, good to see you're still alive and kicking.

Windows 11 won't run on 7th Gen Intel or earlier (at least not i7-7700k). Anything 8th Gen Intel and newer is ok for Windows 11.

Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025. The current version, 22H2, will be the final version of Windows 10. All W10 editions will still get monthly security update releases through to 2025, then it's over.

Strongly recommend you upgrade to W11 compatible.

You still making those groovy Damascus steel knives?

I was seeing CNET deals page link Windows 10 and 11 Pro keys for sale for as cheap as $39.99 not sure how long the deal was going but at least it's not expensive if a key is needed. Unfortunately it seems like Microsoft isn't as good about always allowing a key to be reused as they once were.
