Hey all,

I am currently torn between buying a 4k 27 or 28 inch 4k 144hz monitor or the 42 inch 4k 120hz tv/ monitor and wall mounting it as my main monitor.

The TV would set me back about $1000 or so with taxes.  A monitor I can snag for around $500  I sold my 1080p 240hz and my 3440x1440 144hz so I am using a 2016 vizio smart tv 4k as my main monitor and only monitor.  It is wall mounted.  So swapping it for the OLED seems like a no brainer.  But it is a TV, and will I really notice that big difference from a 42 inch VA smart tv vs a 42 inch LG c2?

So I am asking.

Do I buy a 27 or 28 inch 4k 144hz monitor or a OLED LG c2?

Usage.

33% gaming
33% movies
33% web browsing.

I play alot of story driven games.  But I dont enjoy a nice pvp game from time to time.

This is my steam account Steam Community :: ToothlessRaider so that will give you an idea of what games I enjoy.

Any advice on buying the OLED or go for an actual monitor would be appreciated. (Note:  I game in a walk in closet converted to a pc room, so it has no lights other than the pc and light bulb that is almost always off)

I’d stick to a non oled display as you could get burn in.

Not seen any reports of burn in on the C2 42 inch.

But do you have any 4k 27 inch 28 inch 144hz recommendations?

This is my wall mounted vizio smart tv 4k, I was going to replace that with the C2 or I would buy a monitor and put it on the desk arm like the 2nd photo

I am wanting 4k.   Not going back to 1440p, just torn on what 4k to buy.   I dont want to spend $1000 on a monitor.  A TV I would, a monitor prefer to stay under $600

If you don’t want to spend 1k on a 4k monitor then I guess you’ll need to go the tv route as the monitors are like 1k or more.

Feel free to link any you suggest.  I mean I dont want to but if I see something that screams buy me, I might.  But if I dont go with the OLED 4k, something like the M28U or the LG 950 4k 144hz displays are like $500 to $650.   They seem to be more than decent in reviews.  The only other OLED displays are all well over $1k, and if I am not going oled, I dont see the point in overspending for a small screen.  But any links to monitors Ill look at.

So far I am eyeballing the

M28u, ($500 to 550)

SAMSUNG 28" Odyssey G70A ($700)

or

LG 27GN950-B ($600)

As my potential purchases.

No problem. I'm currently running the Acer Predator X27 atm. I've had it for 5 years. Still running strong.

Burn in on modern OLED is more of a myth then a reality unless you played for hours without any cut screen or loading screens and then in that case you might notice the HUD from the game but it would be hard to really see hitting that point in real world use. Burn in was a major drawback before and Sajin is correct that it was a major problem but modern technology has helped make something you would have to adjust settings or try to have happen to see. It’s why they now make gaming OLED monitors.

The bigger issue is while OLED does have perfect blacks it won’t be as bright as the monitor.

I did read that the SDR is low.  But I wonder how it would be in a walk in closet?  All the videos I see on youtube nobody really addresses it.

But I might chicken out from the new OLED and just go for a nice 27 inch IPS and play it safe.  I just dont know.  I try to make educated decisions when I buy,as I like to run my stuff for years before upgrading when possible.  My TV is from 2016, so it had a good long run, and I do 33% gaming 33% movies and 33% web.  If I do go oled and web is too dark, I could just snag a cheap monitor for surfing, but I am trying hard to go back to 1 screen life after nearly a decade of triple monitors. lol

Ok update.

I bought the 42 inch LG C2 OLED.

The good.  The image quality was god tier.
The bad.  Flickering with GSync VRR and HDR.

I ended up returning the LG C2 after testing 2 others, they all have the flicker and they seem to be more affected if HDR is on and 120hz is on.

I went with the Gigabyte M28U.  4k 144hz monitor IPS.

Let me be the 1st to tell you.  OLED isnt the end all be all.  Not yet.

IF the OLED HDR and screen was a 10, its smoothness and responsiveness was a 6 compared to to the M28U.

The M28U feels so much better for mouse movement, reading text, shooters, and pretty much all monitor related things.  HDR is a solid 7.5   Oled HDR was an 11.  No contest.  But comparing the 2, I am now happy the OLED flickered, because the M28U is a better well rounded option comparing the 2, and it was half the price.

Anyway, enjoying my 4k 144hz, even though most games dont see 144hz in 4k, nearly everything I play other than CP2077 is able to stay well above 60 usually 80 to 130 fps in most games.

Sounds like a good choice for you and if it lasts like your TV has someday you are likely going to be able to play CP2077 at the solid 144hz on it.
