Unless there's something seriously wrong with this build, I think there's a problem with the algorithm that tracks writes on the 990 Pro: Here's a write comparison Vs my 980 purchased & used since June of 2021. 980 was only used as a scratch disk for video editing till last week when I installed Ubuntu on it, but with only 75 poh the 990 Pro has managed more than double the writes.... Then I just looked a couple minutes ago & writes have jump significantly, I've not even been using the PC for 4 hours WT....

I think that the software recently had an update. It could be related to that.

Magician did have an update, but this is hardware data read with CrystalDiskInfo, not software data.

Samsung did release a new firmware for the 990 Pro which I promptly updated, and so far, after checking SMART with the new firmware, my drive still shows 0% used. I believe that it was showing 99% with original firmware, but that might have been the 970 EVO Plus... ,5,5,Percentage Used,0,OK ,47,32,Data Units Read,22844406,OK ,63,48,Data Units Written,15718731,OK - This is reportedly in thousands, but I'm thinking it may actually be recording in 100's. i.e. real usage would be 800GB written, not 8TB written ,79,64,Host Read Commands,867040022,OK ,95,80,Host Write Commands,401431007,OK

If the used percentage is wrong, what is the harm? Used percentage is just informational, right? Like, the odds of failure increase, but are not certain. Right? Please? I hope so. There is no way that they put in a software lock so at 0% perceived heath remaining, it just quits working even if hardware-wise there is nothing wrong. Certainly, they must not be that short-sighted.

Actually there is an intentional software lock, it locks the drive into a read-only state before that health % hits zero. It's a means of 'hopefully' keeping your data on the drive intact & recoverable before you send it in to Samsung for warranty replacement... However, if the drive has the OS installed on it, it cannot boot from the drive if it's in Read-Only mode.

That is one of the dumbest heavy-handed things I have heard. Serves Samsung right for it to backfire in their face if they are going to force this with no bypass. Warning the user instead of locking it, or providing a lock bypass is a consumer-friendly alternative. So what sort of class action lawsuit is this going to cause when drives prematurely "fail" after the warranty expires due to all of these incorrect measurements while the firmware was bugged?

The general thinking I'm seeing is that the wear reading isn't just wrong, there's permanent wear happening to the drive itself. People who update to the fixed firmware do not get the wear back, and drives that have already entered read-only mode cannot be fixed. Read-only mode is better than not-locking the drive, because in ROM you can recover your data off of it. Remember that the file mapping table is stored on the flash too, and if this gets corrupted then you will either lose the entire drive of data or have to pay big money to a professional company for a chance at a partial recovery. Even with the read-only mode protection it's not a guarantee it will work, one of the Rossman group techs just posted a video of his own personal Samsung 970 EVO 2TB that failed without going into ROM and he spent hours using some crazy expensive professional data recovery tools to pull most of the data off of the corrupted drive. Read-only mode is your friend, but even so SSD owners should absolutely not rely on that failsafe to work.

Are you sure that the wear happened, or that it was measured and recorded, and since there is no other data to go by, there is no way to validate those wear measurements and alter them the correct amount.... so they just continue on as if that was a real result.

Even if the wear numbers are entirely artificial, they're still recorded to SMART and S.M.A.R.T. data cannot be reset or subtracted from, you can only add to the data that is already there. SMART IS the "Black Box" of your HDD / SSD.... it wouldn't do you much good if the data there could be altered or deleted after it is written. So far, SMART does not indicate any errors on my drive, but does indicate 19 unsafe shutdown's. Not sure what that's about, as I'm on a 1500va battery backup with no battery events, and the only shutdown's have been initiated by me. I just purchased a Solidigm P44 Pro 2TB for a replacement. Unfortunately, I cannot return the 990 Pro, so I'll just keep it in the system as a secondary backup drive.

No I'm not. But I don't think the controller is capable of physically measuring wear in real time. If it isn't, then there is no way to reverse the wear counters because they won't know by how much to safely do so. TLC NAND stores three bits per cell, which means it has eight potential voltage states of each cell to denote the data stored in it.
