I am getting a kernel-power issue in the event viewer in Windows.  This only happens when under a load.  Is this a power supply problem and would anyone have any suggestions how to diagnose this problem?  I have a g2 750 watt power supply that powers up the computer normally.

Yeah, it’s most likely a psu issue. Just swap in a new psu for testing.

I don’t have an extra power supply laying around. Does EVGA test them if I send it in? Maybe I have to buy another one first to test things?

They will test it when you send it in. Buying another one to swap in is your fastest option without having your pc down waiting for the psu to come back from evga.

I forgot they sell them at Best Buy. How likely is it another problem entirely? From what you are saying it’s more likely to be a power supply though. I guess other problems are not as frequent? Are the cables compatible on all EVGA power supplies when I get the new one? I’ll probably use the new cables, but curious if they can be reused?

It could be other issues like overheating, or a gpu issue, but if it happens instantly as soon as you put a load on the system I’m pretty sure it’s the psu. What gpu do you have?

What are the rest of your specs?

A kernel-power error really only means that the system shut down and Windows wasn't expecting it to.  Although power is in the name of the error, Windows isn't really smart enough to determine if your PSU is at fault.  Of course, shutting down under load can be an issue caused by a power supply, but other hardware components can be responsible also.

I would check your motherboard BIOS to see if it shows your +12V, +5V, and +3.3V.  This is usually in the Advanced > Hardware Monitor (aka HW Monitor, System Monitor, PC Health Status, etc.).  Post the voltages that you see in there, giving it a minute or two to let you see how the voltages are behaving.

I bought a new gpu assuming it the issue. It’s a 6700xt. I’m guessing it uses less power than the previous 980ti and causes less issues, but the PC infrequently locks up with both video cards.

If you buy the same psu you can reuse the cables without a problem. If you buy a different psu I would swap the cables to be safe. Asking if you can use the same cables here on thre forums is also an option once we know what psu you will be getting.

It’s probably going to be the GT 750 model. Not entirely sure what is available at my local store.

According to this post… https://forums.evga.com/FindPost/3184022 gt and g2 cables should be interchangeable.

I'm not 100% sure yet, but I believe you were right on about the power supply being the issue.  Everything is much smoother and no hesitation.  Can't believe I have gone on like this for so long.  Purchased the gt850.  Glad I was able to fix it with your help as well.  I truly appreciate it.

No problem.

I forgot to ask.  Now that I'm 100% confident it was a power supply failure, what do I do to get a replacement under the 10 year warranty?  I'm also curious why the new one only came with a 7 year warranty?  My other g2 power supply is going on 8 years with no issues.

Just call evga support on the phone to get the rma process started…

https://www.evga.com/about/contactus/

Note: When sending the psu back to evga just sent the unit itself without the cables.

Once I receive the replacement power supply do I need to register the replacement?  Any idea what they are replacing G2 750 power supplies with?  I was unable to find any at my local store.  Is a GT 750/850 comparable?  I noticed they have a shorter warranty of 7 years.

No, they should automatically register it to your account. Most likely another G2. I wouldn't compare a GT to a G2.

Hi kieran2230,

I am sorry to hear that you are having a stability issue with your PC.  I suggest however that if you do install a new power supply to test, that you use the new cables that come with it.

Please take note that the GT and the G2 have different 24 Pin cable setups and are not fully interchangeable with this cable.  This is why we always recommend to use the new cables.

I would also like to mention that we can help with a cross shipment RMA if you are located in the US or Canada and this is a quicker way to receive a tested replacement.  Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need further assistance.  Support@EVGA.com or by phone at 1-888-881-3842 Option 1 (Monday - Friday 9AM to 6PM PST).
