Hey everyone,
I'm clearly doing something wrong, and it's probably something obvious. I've built a number of systems before, but never needed to use BIOS flashback prior to this build, as every past motherboard came with a compatible BIOS when purchased.
I just got my CPU today and started setting up my system, but hit a roadblock when trying to flash the BIOS to 2.03 for Raptor Lake support. Following the steps in the "Flashing the BIOS Without a CPU" section of the motherboard manual, I set up the system without the CPU installed, added the latest BIOS to the included flash drive, renamed the BIOS to EVGAE698.bin, and pressed and held the 'Bios Update' button to flash the BIOS. After the right LED display cycled for a few seconds it changed to display 'E8'. At this point I let it sit for about 20 minutes, and nothing changed. I tried cycling the motherboard on and off again to reflash. When cycled on it displayed code '00', and then proceeded to show E8 again when trying to reflash. I tried switching to a brand new FAT32 formatted flash drive and had the same results.
At this point I inserted my CPU to see if the system would flash with the CPU installed. When running with the installed CPU the display cycled for longer, but eventually settled on the same error code 'E8'. Shortly after showing E8 the system restarted itself and tried to boot, and got stuck on error code '12'. A subsequent attempt ended up showing E8 again and not power cycling further.
I feel like I misread something, skipped a step, or I'm just doing something stupid. Does anybody have any info on what this particular code means? Did I grab the wrong BIOS or name it incorrectly?

Fortunately for me, I flashed the BIOS to version 2.03 on my Z690 Dark Kingpin while my 12900K was still installed. So i was able to update from within the BIOS settings page with my components installed and my screen turned on. I was then able to install my new 13900KF without any issues.
However, after installing the new 13900KF CPU, I decided i wanted to flash BIOS chip 2 and 3 so that they'd all be compatible with the 13900KF. So i tried using the BIOS Flashback button method since BIOS chip 2 and 3 weren't compatible with the 13900KF yet. And then I ran into the same problem OP is having. I always get the E8 error code so can't even begin the flash.
Do I need to take the CPU out of the socket before the BIOS Flashback method will work?

I decided i wanted to flash BIOS chip 2 and 3 so that they'd all be compatible with the 13900KF. So i tried using the BIOS Flashback button method since BIOS chip 2 and 3 weren't compatible with the 13900KF yet. And then I ran into the same problem OP is having. I always get the E8 error code so can't even begin the flash.
Can't you hotflash BIOS 2/3 by booting into windows on BIOS 1, then switching the position and flashing with the software utility? EVGA has instructions on hotflashing that appear like they should apply for you. https://www.evga.com/supp...tails.aspx?faqid=59733Ravenmaster

I don't think that should matter. I'm getting the error both with and without the CPU installed, so I think I'm probably missing some important intermediary step rather than flashback not working with an unsupported BIOS/CPU combination.

I should also add that I have access to a second Z690 Classified and a second kit of the same ddr5 for troubleshooting if necessary (long story I would rather not get into right now).

Update: I swapped to the second Z690 Classified and put the same flash drive on the board. BIOS update didn't throw error code E8 and cycled for about 5 minutes. At the end the system tried to power on and the fans spun up with code 00. I think the flash worked, but I have not seated the CPU yet. I inspected the CPU socket in preparation to install a CPU and saw a few specs of what look like dust in the socket. When I zoomed in on my phone camera and took some pictures, it appears that the board came with a tiny speck of debris wedged between some of the pins, and I need to find an air duster or something to blow it out.
At this point I have what I believe are a board that won't update via the BIOS Update button, and one that shipped with a bit of debris in the socket. I'm not sure what I should do to proceed at this point.

Unfortunately when I attempted to hotflash BIOS 2 while in Windows, after pressing 'Y' to flash, I got some yellow text message saying 'Warning: Unable to detect if ME was disabled. Do you wish to proceed with the flash write operation? <Y/N>:' I pressed 'Y' and hit enter. It looked like it was writing to BIOS at first but after just 2-3 seconds the PC shut itself down. I waited 5 mins to see if anything would happen but it didn't. So I pressed the power button to turn it back on but nothing happened. I had to pull out the PSU plug, flip the BIOS switch back to BIOS 1 (the only good working BIOS with 2.03 installed) then boot up again. I just cannot flash BIOS 2 or 3 no matter which method i use. I've tried 4 different USB sticks but using the BIOS flashback button. 2 of them give error E8, one of the gives error E2 and even the original EVGA usb stick containing original BIOS and drivers gives E8. I'm at a total loss here.

Ah, that's unfortunate. On the bright side, at least you have one working BIOS?
Right now I'm weighing my options. I'm going to try to find an air duster tomorrow and blow the dirt out of the socket on the one that appeared to have flashed correctly, and see if that one runs properly. Meanwhile I think I might have to RMA the other board. I'll wait and see what others have to say over the next few days first since I would rather not RMA a brand new motherboard just because BIOS flashback doesn't work. I hope there's a straightforward solution to this anyway.

Were you trying to flash "down" to a previous bios? I had that error when I tried to recover via 1.15, but then flashing 2.03 went without a hitch.

When you flashed successfully 2.03 did u do it in Windows? Or did u use the BIOS flashback button?

No, I was trying flash to 2.03.
When you flashed successfully 2.03 did u do it in Windows? Or did u use the BIOS flashback button?
Did it in Windows. I had 1 good bios on 1.15 and flashed 2.02 to positions 2 & 3. Thought 1 was a bad flash, but then realized the problems. Tried to recover the 2 positions with the known good 1.15, but got the error you mentioned. Flashing 2.03 to them resolved the problem, so on 2.03 on all 3 now.

Update: I used an air duster to get the debris out of the socket of the Z690 Classified board that wasn't reporting error code E8. It successfully flashed with the included flash drive. I also flashed position 2 and position 3 with a second flash drive to check if the problems were drive related. This indicates that I likely wasn't doing anything wrong, since I did the same thing for two boards, and one flashed correctly.
Meanwhile, my other Z690 Classified board displays code E8 when trying to flash with either flash drive across all three BIOS positions. When trying to POST using the same memory and CPU as the other board, it starts with code 7F, and cycles through a mix of 7F, 00, 54, and 59. Based on the board manual, I am inclined to believe that code 59 accurately indicates that the CPU is not currently supported and microcode is not currently available for it on whatever BIOS version it shipped with.
At this point, I am inclined to believe that either the BIOS flashback function or the BIOS the board shipped with came bricked in some capacity. I don't have a 12th gen CPU, which pretty significantly limits my ability to test further. I briefly considered ordering a pentium G7400 to test with, since Best Buy had them for $45 tonight and they're the cheapest and lowest end 12th gen CPU available. While waffling back and forth on ordering it they sold out, so there went that idea. It isn't on the EVGA list of supported CPUs either, so that may have been for the best.
At this point I think my only option is just going to be RMAing the nonfunctional board. Anybody got any last ditch things I should try first?

Got my new z-690 Classified yesterday and unpacked it. Have read through all the manual about flashing without a CPU (picking up a new 13700K later today) and downloaded the 2.04 BIOS from the website, renamed it EVGAE698.bin, copied it to the included USB stick, inserted it in the socket on the board (was really tight but thought I had it inserted all the way), connected the 24 pin power cord, turned on the power supply and held the BIOS button down for 2.5 seconds while it counted down.
BIOS button flashed, the right number cycled for a few seconds, then got the E8 message and nothing else.
Retraced the steps again after removing the USB stick and reinserted it and tried again with the same results. BIOS switch is in position 1 but not sure what to try next. Any suggestions would be appreciated. What does the E8 mean?

I ultimately never got an answer to this. I contacted somebody at EVGA looking for more information, and was told that they didn't have an answer to what caused it at that time. I let it go temporarily since I had managed to get one of my boards working, and wasn't in a rush to get the second one running. You probably should contact support to see if they have any further information. I think you may need to flash on a 12th gen CPU within the BIOS or windows, or RMA to get it running on a 13th gen CPU.

I am having the same issues. I have a back and forth service ticket open now and anticipate I will have to RMA. I flashed the BIOS I was using before installing my 13900K and now the other two BIOS positions do not work (not bootable) and cannot be flashed. Attempting to hot flash in the BIOS does not work. The USB SPI port and flash drive inserted in the port are visible, but the BIOS .bin file on the flash drive is not visible if I move the selector switch to a different BIOS position. Attempting to hot flash in Windows produces the same error about the ME and if I disable the ME in the BIOS the flash process reaches the verification step at the end and fails. I spent several hours last night trying about a dozen different USB flash drives, FAT, FAT32, including the one provided with the mobo and very old USB 2.0 flash drives. I removed CPU, GPU, memory and disconnected everything external and the other two BIOS positions will not successfully flash no matter what I try. BIOS flashback efforts always fails with E1, E4 or E8. I tried using FPT for DOS and I get an error message that the BIOS is write-protected and the flash process doesn't even start.

Did you get it running or an RMA? I just completed a build and get the same E8 error when trying to flash. I can't even get video up. I've tried multiple different usb's and nothing. It's our first built with my son and his Xmas present and right now am feeling quite frustrated.

Try resetting the BIOS with the button, then turn it off immediately, and update

I never got the board running, and needed to RMA. I never got any answer to what was causing the issue, and no troubleshooting steps provided made any difference in my case. However, from what I have pieced together reading other peoples reports, it may be possible to flash the BIOS within the BIOS/windows using a 12th gen cpu. I didn't have one to test with, so I was unable to verify this.
