Put the finishing touches on my Ryzen PC yesterday with a Gigabyte RTX 4090 Windforce. Overkill for a what is really only a VR gaming rig? Maybe, but after setting up my PiMax 5K Super for VR gaming with it's massive 200° field of view and 180hz refresh rate I was running out of grunt on my RX 6800 XT. Anyway enough of the babbling, this is just a pure VR gaming machine and outside of manually tuning my memory to 6000Mhz 30-36-36-76 1T and an undervolting profile for the CPU everything is just run at stock speeds.

Specs:
AMD Ryzen 7 7700X w/NZXT Kraken X63
Gigabyte RTX 4090 Windforce
ASUS X670E Tuf Gaming WiFi
32GB T-Force Delta RGB @ 6000Mhz
EVGA SuperNova G3 1000w

Yes I hate the octopus monster dangling from the card too. I ordered a 16pin cable to clean it up but it’s delayed in shipping.

EDIT: I think I fixed the link? Can anyone see the pic?

Nice rig, looks a little cramped though. A bigger case would get better airflow.

All the 4090s are massive and they make most mid tower cases look cramped. That being said the temps are fine across the board no real issues with airflow. I have the CPU using the curve optimizer in the BIOS set to -30 so it undervolts the CPU and the card is run at stock. My CPU temps are in the mid 80C during a full stress test for the 7700X (that's great for AM5 coming down from their default 95C) and while gaming it barely tops 70C hovering in the mid 60s most of the time. The GPU runs at 70C load and doesn't really budge from there with a hotspot at 81C.

I put an EK block on my ASUS 4090 TUF OC yesterday and now it's almost smaller (albeit taller) than one of my blocked 1080TI's.

LOL, you are pulling another 4090 from your sleeves

I believe that roomy full tower is the must have, for current and future builds. GPUs are larger in size, enormous TDP/heat generators, even CPU TDP is huge as adding tens of billion transistors (even with shrinking wafers) taking a tool on case size and cooling solutions.

I'd love to venture into VR. I only wish the higher end VR sets came all wireless, just like the controllers. It seem like there is a lot of bulky wires to have to deal with on the current VR gen offerings.

Until we can get higher bandwidth with extreme low latency for wireless setups, wires are gonna be a reality for most VR solutions. The reason this is so important is because in VR you want as low a response time as possible for motion to photon. Meaning that if you move your head to look to the left you want it to be virtually imperceptible to your brain that your visual inputs are delayed. This greatly prevents things like motion sickness and nausea for the user.

You’d be surprised at how sensitive you are to things like this. With a delay of just 20ms some people start to get nauseated while in VR after just a few minutes. Oculus claims the Rift S has a motion to photon delay of 17ms and PiMax claims a 15ms delay for their headset. Both of those are close to what is the most common threshold for comfort to the user. Then there are options like the Quest 2 that can do full wireless to the HMD over a Wi-Fi connection. This sounds great till you realize that under most setups the motion to photon delay is well over the 20ms mark and in average lands in the neighborhood of just shy of 30ms. This is definitely perceptible to the end user and depending on how sensitive you are to this, you could start to feel queasy and nauseous in just a few minutes.

We need something better than Wi-Fi and would probably need a dedicated high bandwidth solution just for the headset with no interfering traffic. However we just haven’t got there yet. Regardless after having said all that the current wired solutions really aren’t that cumbersome and are really just one wire from the HMD to the PC and you honestly forget about it after a few minutes. Though yes I would really love a proper wireless solution.

Nice compact rig.  I can do an hour on my Q2.  The Oculus WiFi options is a joke.  I'm waiting for the halo VR low latency, high res, high refresh with wireless tb.  Realistically, not going to happen at reasonable pricing soon.  Waiting for 4090 availability for my computers.  I was using a 10900K w/3090 FTW3 with the Q2, but it was nauseating at times.

lol "compact rig" in a mid tower case.  That's what RTX 4090s do.....they are ridiculously big. With the card removed there is actually quite a bit of room in the case, it's just the massive card makes everything look smaller in comparison.

Yeah I agree that the WiFi connection is very bad on the Quest 1 and 2 with very noticeable delay from head movements. My nephew has a Quest 2 and I tried it out over WiFi and I was nauseated after only a few minutes for me.

Still looks crazy how big the 4090 but very nice build.

Reading your motion to photon replies had me thinking. I never thought about that being an issue, but it's definitely understandable, and it must be annoying as heck. Early LCD monitor testing with games got me really annoyed with the input lag. I can imagine it must be even more frustrating trying to do something in VR with your body and waiting for a delay for the actions to finally take place on the headset.

Do you think wifi will ever fully alleviate that, or would some crazy invention like a laser guided transmitter/receiver need to be incorporated shooting a straight path of data to the headset?

There are some options out there for a "better" wireless VR experience but as I said even under the best circumstances the motion to photon delay is above the 20ms sweet spot that most HMD developers aim for. The D-Link VR bridge or the HTC Vive Wireless Adapter come to mind as the "better" options for wireless VR but I say "better" loosely as both are inferior to a wired connection and both come with limitations like battery dependency or just more bulk for the user to wear while playing VR, neither of which are desirable.

I'm not sure if we will ever get to the point of a wireless VR setup being better than a wired one as far as response times are concerned especially on a WiFi setup. Maybe a laser array system or a focused directional broadcasting solution for a defined play area will bring them to parity or at least closer than we are now for a wireless set up, but like I said we just aren't there yet. Currently the only true wireless VR solutions are the self contained systems than can run autonomously from a dedicated PC like the Quest 2 or Quest Pro. Those I'm sure you know come with heavy compromises like severely pared back graphics quality and poor battery life.

Was gonna wait and get a RX 7900 XTX but after their announcement that they wouldn't really be competing with Nvidia on the high end I decided to get another RTX 4090 for my VR rig so I've been monitoring stock for a bit trying to get one. Call me easily entertained, but I like how you make your AMD rigs with red lighting,

The D-Link adapter for the Quest is pretty good as it’s a direct connection to the PC so very little real lag I have noticed and was worth it over a wired connection. I kind of think thought that VR isn't as split second gameplay as PC gaming to begin with even for rapid games like beat saber. With it I can play any PC VR game just fine and my head strap has extra battery life so I am pretty good for as long as I mostly want to play. Some headset straps can swap out the battery which is kind of annoying but could allow for unlimited play time with enough batteries.

I personally I am waiting for the PSVR 2 to jumpstart PC VR up again and justify having like a 4090 for VR. Since I don’t think the PS5 VR scene will be big enough to get development without a PC port. I also don’t think that ports that can run on a Quest 2 would impress a PS5 owner.

Was gonna wait and get a RX 7900 XTX but after their announcement that they wouldn't really be competing with Nvidia on the high end I decided to get another RTX 4090 for my VR rig so I've been monitoring stock for a bit trying to get one. So can you, just will take a bit of watching is all if you want one.

Congrats on getting that 2nd RTX 4090 because they are very hard to find.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

Call me easily entertained, but I like how you make your AMD rigs with red lighting,
and Intel rigs with blue lighting .
    Nice touch .

Wasn't that hard to get another one. Just monitored stock on Newegg for about a week and pulled the trigger when they came in. There was a GIGANTIC drop at Best Buy today for the RTX 4090 FE model and in fact are still popping in and out as I type this. Yesterday was a fairly substantial drop at Newegg for the MSI Gaming Trio that we both own too.

Well yeah if you are hell bent on a particular model that definitely complicates things. I honestly wouldn't sweat it man just get whatever one you can they are all virtually the same in regards to upper limits of performance and temps. Both my RTX 4090s hit mid 60C load and both can do around 3Ghz core with the Gigabyte one being able to hold about 50Mhz higher.

Problem is I have limited slot space, need the 'slimmer' card the AIO provides.

Is it the AMD brand one, or a partner brand ?  Kind of suprising to see the picture on the AMD website .
It looks like the card has no air holes in its' IO cover plate .

It's a reference design AMD card from PowerColor

No it doesn't have air holes on the I/O plate nor does it have a "flow-through" design that most Nvidia cards have either. That being said the card runs pretty cool with load temps of about 70C and a hotspot temp of about 85C.

EDIT: It looks tiny compared to the RTX 4090 doesn't it? lol

Yeah, I get what you mean from your picture .  You can see other stuff in there around the edges of this one :)
I guess a person could put a hose fitting in the nice, blank I/O plate to shoot dry ice vapor, or freezing nitrogen gas
into the card if they wanted to ... that would be pretty crazy .  Seriously though, that's a very nice card .
In your capable hands I'm sure it will break records .
