It used to be that the price/performance of a new xx80 card was better than the previous xx90 card, not the same.
Additionally, the MSRP of the previous xx90 card was ridiculous, so it's hardly something to try to be on parity with.

Agree, but I had to upgrade my current video card after spending $1,500 on 32"gaming monitor and Atmos soundbar.
4080 is cheap solution for me as if I decided to go for 4090 than would build a new rig which would be another $3K.

You should have just waited a bit longer and got the RTX 4090. If your rig can accommodate a RTX 4080, it will work fine with a RTX 4090. The cards are virtually identical in dimensions and weight and use pretty much the same coolers.

Intel i9 14900K ...............................Ryzen 9 7950X3D
MSI RTX 4090 Gaming Trio................ASRock Phantom RX 7900 XTX
Samsung Odyssey G9.......................PiMax 5K Super/Meta Quest 3
ASUS ROG Strix Z690-F Gaming........ASUS TUF Gaming X670E Plus WiFi
64GB G.Skill Trident Z5 6800Mhz.......64GB Kingston Fury RGB 6000Mhz
MSI MPG A1000G 1000w..................EVGA G3 SuperNova 1000w

TDP 320 was a decision maker fact for me.
Have a roomy 011 XL case but 4090 is kind power usage overkill.

Interesting Newegg still has 4080 Gaming OC in stock.  BB sold out in a minute.  Newegg ship cards now while BB is over a week out.  I'm very curious on stock quantities at launch and why scalpers didn't raid Newegg.

Hopefully I can find a Gigabyte/MSI 4090 local stock at MSRP in LV.    Otherwise, coming home to a transitional 4080 until next year.  I will not pay a scalper, just greedy nVidia's MSRP.

Well, if you bought on to Scalp, you better be willing to eat it. If you pay tax plus selling fees it is a long way to break even. No 4080 has a bid over msrp and when Ebay takes 15% off the top...the 3090ti basically killed scalping except for a limited few idiots.

I bought it and will migrate it down to other boxes.  I agree about cost recovery for scalpers.  They probably don't claim revenue on their State/Fed taxes since that's eat away at the margins again, in addition to Amazon/Ebay overhead.

I tried to buy the 4090 Aorus and Gaming OC from Newegg today.  Only got to the ADD button and sold out almost immediately.  I'm not using any scripts/hacks so it's pretty hopeless until more stock is available.  My 4080 is an expensive transitional solution, but I'll make use of it in other ways.

Nice clean build.  3090ti (+500w) VS 4080 (~300w).  Sadly, my 3090ti cost me a lot less than the 4080.  Hope to have fun and recoup costs at Vegas.

I am with you C1 , hope this Launch goes down ugly and we see a price drop on the 80 class so the 5090 might be under 1 k
