what's different now? scalpers be scalping but...miners aren't buying all the cards at any price. so i expect the scalpers will be losing their shirts after a few production runs. be patient.

4-5 months in, the 3080 was selling for 50% over MSRP....................BEFORE THE MINING BOOM.

So yeah, if you can wait for mid 2023, you should be able to catch one in stock at MSRP.

Nah, I'm going to update my CPU and motherboard and then start waiting until just before the next card releases and buy the previous high-end card for a discount. I'm not playing the BS game anymore. No game ever truly "needs" the just released video card anyway.

lol, the 30 series cards didn't launch before the mining "boom" whatever that means

there are only two periods for mining with regard to GPU supply constraints:
-before eth proof of stake
-after eth proof of stake

without proof of work, GPU mining ROI is not worth. the current shortage comes from manufacturer-generated artificial shortage to keep prices high, and scalpers buying up stock to get a cut until the market is saturated.

the only reason we didn't hit market saturation for 30 series for so long is because it was still profitable for miners to buy more cards as msrp. once the ROI extended out beyond eth POS, that was the beginning of the end.

I don't think you understand, at all.  Jan 2021 was before the ETH mining boom hit.  Miners were not rushing like crazy to buy cards, veteran miners were buying cards where they could get a deal near MSRP.  The 3080 was STILL at $1200 on the secondary market, or 50% over MSRP, per stock-X price history.

Given the strength of the 4090 over all the 3080 Ti, 3090 and 3090 Ti on the market, it could easily be scalped to over $2000 street price until well into next year.

Sorry, you don't know either.  Just look at the ETH price history and see for yourself.  Yeah you could mine before that and make some money, but there was no insane ROI on the cards like there was at the peak in mid-late 2021.   ETH took several big leaps up in Fall '20 and around the holiday period, but I point to the jump around Feb 1 from about $1200 to $1800 as the one that really impacted the scalped GPU price, as reflected in the Stock-X price tracker and was imho when the 'mining boom hit'

Not just 4090 is nowhere to be found, 3xxx prices are insane and even retailers like Best Buy and Micro Center have depleted and overpriced cards.
Inflation and sellers' greed inflate prices, and buyers behave like there is no tomorrow.

BTW I think Best Buy is going down soon. Local store have so poor choice, almost nothing in stock, monitors not even plugged? Poorly trained staff (gaming monitors stand) don't know what HDR means and suggest me to do purchase online???

Guys the 40 series card's haven't even been out 2 weeks. Relax with the doom and gloom talk. It's going to take at least a month or 2 to normalize stock and availability. You guys seem to have forgotten this is what happens every generation. They sell out and then it takes a month or 2 for supply to stabilize, it happened to the 9 series, 10 series and 20 series at launch too. 30 series was an anomaly because of the pandemic and crippled logistical infrastructure it caused and created the perfect storm with the spike in crypto. None of those factors are in play this time so relax guys.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.
