Half-Life: Ray Traced has been delayed, but Quake RT is here
In a video announcement today, the PC modder sultim-t released a video announcing the delay of their Half-Life: Ray Traced project, revealing instead that they have created a fully path traced version of id Software's Quake. Previously, sultim-t has created path tracing mods for both DOOM and Serious Sam TFE, giving these early 3D games support for path traced global illumination, reflections, refractions, soft shadows and other effects. These changes dramatically change the look of these classic 3D shooters, giving PC gamers with access to ray tracing compatible hardware another reason to replay these classic games. Owners of Quake on Steam can easily install Quake: Ray Traced using the files available on the mod's Github page. Using this guide, Nvidia RTX GPU users can also install DLSS 2.0 to the mod, and all players of Quake: Ray Traced can quickly switch between the game's path traced and standard renderers by pressing the F button. The video below showcases Quake: Ray Traced in action.

Sadly, Half-Life: Ray Traced currently has no ETA, and no reason was given for the projects delay aside from. All saltim-t had to say was that the project was "postponed" and that they were "awaiting further data".

interesting to see these old games brought back this way, even more interesting because quake 1 is a dos game and they much have done a lot more patching then just adding ray tracing. the whole audio system must have been re-amped not to mention making it work with windows 10/11.
I do wonder if RTX quake will work with the old alien mod?

While I haven’t looked at the ray tracing mod they recently released Quake Remastered. It’s the original Quake and addons and touched up lightly enough that you feel you are playing the original but does have a lot more modern menu system. It’s definitely worth looking at since when I first saw it I thought it wasn’t improved over the original but then you how you realized with side by side comparisons it looks better in your mind then it really looked.

It's a good way to sell more copies of a remake of an old game, but better graphics don't make a better game. I would much rather think of it fondly in my memories. skip
